Hello,
I wondered if anyone could help me with this photo. It's apparently a Thomas Loy whose family was from Forkhill, Armagh and came from some cousins in Ohio, USA. They say its an Irish Guards uniform but it looks suspiciously to me like a Scottish regimental uniform. Its not a brilliant picture I know but he seems to be wearing a kilt and sporran. Can anyone throw any light on this at all?
Thanks
Issy

hi issy,
i think you're right,it does look like scottish. whilst the irish regiments would wear the kilt i think it is just plain saffron unlike the fella in the photo who looks to be wearing a tartan. the irish kilt might have changed from the time the photo was taken until now,i dont know, but i would put my money on him belonging to a scottish regiment.
just a wee thought; why dont you post the photo on the restoration board and see if anyone can improve it for you. they do some amazing work on old photos :)

I didn't know the Irish wore kilts too! But, yes I think it a tartan. I have seen a book on Scottish regimental uniform and the shaping on the bottom of the jacket looked exactly the same. Thanks for that. Maybe I should post it on the Scottish forum too. I think I will have a go at restoring it myself. I have done some other old famil ones before and they came out quite well.

Hi Issy the picture is of an Irish guardsman. I have one similar he is called Thomas Loy my great grandfather.
I have a bit of history from my uncle who's mother was Nelly Westwood, Thomas's daughter.
