Does anyone have the full census returns for the Isle of Raasay (would probably come under Portree parish) for 1841, 51 & 61?
I'm looking for MacLean families, specifically their locations at the time of the censuses, mostly Screapadal, Fearns, Hallaig and Balachuirn. I've got the partial for 1851 but that begs more questions than it answers.
I know I'm asking a lot but hopefully there weren't a lot of MacLeans on Raasay at that time.

Anyone specific you're looking for?

Hi Alastair,
I'm looking for any info on John MacLean, born c.1806 probably in Screapadal, Raasay. He married a Catherine and in the 1851 census they are in Fearns and have six children.
I am trying to find John's parents and, if possible, Catherines. It is possible that John's mother was a Macleod.
Thanks for any help.

I have them. Rebecca Raasay Heritage Trust

Hi Rebecca,
I'd be grateful for any info you may have on my branch of the Raasay MacLeans. I've got back to John MacLean (my GGGrandfather), born circa 1806, but have hit a brick wall when trying to find his parents.
He married a Catherine ? and they had Malcolm (1837), Norman (1839), Isabella (1841), John (1844), Chirsty (1847) and Jessie (1850).
Many thanks for getting in touch. We are hoping to get back to Raasay next summer. It's been too long since we were last there.
Regards,
Geoff Goldsmith

Hi Julia
Welcome to RootsChat :)
There is a member submitted entry on IGI at www.familysearch.org which shows the following:
JULIA MAC LEAN
Parents: WILLIAM MAC LEAN and CHRISTY MAC LEOD
Marriages: ALEXANDER FINLAYSON on 04 MAY 1858 in Portree, Inverness

Perfect! Thank you . this agrees with what I thought but needed some reinforcement .
Now on to tracing the McInnes & McDougall lines from Kilbrandon. I am positive on the John McInnes marrying Christie McDougall around 1886 but anything before that is a guess.
Too many John McInnes's to be sure and I have no points of refernce.
Thanks again .

If you get stuck on the McInnes/McDougall lines, why not start a new post altogether on them and get fresh eyes :)

I am trying to find my way around and cannot , for the life me, find out how I got to you in the first place! I know that I found an Inverness category but now can't figure out how to get back to that screen to find Kilbrandon or culipool. lol

In my husband's Mc/MacLeod tree, there is a Malcolm McLeod, b. 8 April, 1804 Hallaig, Isle of Raasay, married to Chirsty McLean (Christy, Christian) b. 1807 Hallaig, dau. of William McLean, farmer and Margaret McLeod.
Malcolm's parents were Torquil (Torcul) McLeod b. c. 1774 and Christina McLennan. I have started a new topic under "Chirsty McLean of Hallaig", hoping to find out more information of the McLeans.
I have been in touch with you before, Rebecca re the McLeods of Hallaig. Ruth MacLeod (Australia)
