Title: William Maltby Riversley b 1902 and died Hastings 1985
Post by: garry edgar on Tuesday 10 February 09 06:32 GMT (UK)
I am trying to connect a William Maltby Riversley to my family.

My grandfather remembers him as a child, living in the household of his own grandfather.  William was a year or two younger than my grandfather, and understood him to be a cousin.

My grandfather, Leo A Staaden was born in London, 1901.  He appeared in the 1901 census, living with his mother, sister, grandfather, 2 uncles and an Aunt.

In the 1911 Census, William maltby Riversley is an 8 year old, living with the family, but is listed as being a Visitor, and not a grandchild of my Grandfathers Grandfather.  At the time, my grandfather was already living in Australia, but did see him for one last period, between 1912 and 1914.  He then left England permanently in 1914 and I suspect he had little or no further contact.

I have only ever found 2 references to WMRiversley.  The first, was a death listing for him....William Maltby Riversley
Birth Date: 17 May 1902
Death Registration Month/Year: Nov 1985
Age at death (estimated): 83
Registration district: Hastings and Rother
Inferred County: East Sussex
Volume: 18
Page: 1046

and the 1911 Census listing of him living at 57 Lincoln Rd.

I am trying to work out who his parents were, or if he had any descendants.

Could some kind person help...perhaps a look up of an Obituary ?  Thoughts ?

Hi Garry

Did it say on the 1911 census where William was born?

It says he was born in London and the code used was No. 001 which indicated Battersea.

Unless I have missed it I couldn't see any birth in Q2, 3, 4, 1902 and all Quarters 1903. :-\

I also find it strange that I cannot see any Riversley's at all on the 1901 census. Can you?

I know.  I looked at Q2 1901-1905 for any similar surnames/william combinations as well.

He is also the  only Riversley in 1911 as I well I think.

I have even started looking at Riseley's.
I will have to even look at Reeversley and others.

What are the rules about ordering this persons death certificate ?

Can I get it if I tell them that he is supposed to be my cousin, 2 times removed ?

Hi Garry

There are no rules you can order it on line from the GRO and put in the reference number, it costs £7. I cannot remeber the exact details maybe someone can verify. If not have a look at beginners I am sure there is a thread on there explaining it all.

I once got in touch with a local office requesting a death certificate for a friend whose twin had died. They knew I wasn't a relative as it took some tracking down but they still sent it to me. Let me know if you haven't found anything and I will see if I can find a thread tommorrow which might explain it better for you.

Evie(or others)

was just revisiting this line of enquiry.

what about accessing wills ?

is that possible to be searched/ordered ?

I am guessing if it exists, it might outline descendants !

Hi,

There is no record of anyone named Riversley on the LDS website. ??? ???

When I googled the name up came this odd coincidence of Riversley and Maltby in an obit:

FLINTOFF Mary Margaret (Madge), aged 98 years, on May 24, peacefully in Riversley House Nursing Home, formerly of Maltby. etc.   Is it possible that both his middle and last names were just place names?

A child living with grandparents and having no birth or christening record suggests an illegitimate child.  Have you considered that?

Any marriage record for him?

Jann

the idea of an illegitimate child is my personal favourite at the moment.

My grandfathers aunt(Beatrice) was living with this child and her own father in 1911.

I am pretty sure my grandfathers mother(my gr grandmother) and sister of Beatrice was trained as a midwife and worked in nursing once she came out to Australia.    What is the chance of a home-birth and no official birth record ?

PS.  I think from what my grandfather told us, he lived and worked as an engineer in South Africa.  Don't know how to find a marriage record there ?

I finally got around to ordering his death certificate.

He died 26-11-1985, 20 Rotherfield Ave, Bex Hill, East Sussex.
His date of birth was listed as 17-5-1902.
The witness was a Horace Newing who lived at the same address. I am suspecting there might have never been a marriage !

Could some kind sole find aout about any potential Obits.

I have looked for a death cert for Horace but none on ancestry prior to 2005.  He doesn't feature in the BT phonebook either.
