My 2nd great-grandfather, Samuel Williams, was baptized in the parish of Longdon-upon-Tern in 1808. Prior to 1841 he moved to Staffordshire and according to the various census returns was born, 1851 Longdon, 1861 Long, 1871 Withington and 1881 Wellington. I think there is also a town or village called Longdon-upon-Tern. Looking at a map of the area there seems to be both a Longdon upon tern and a Longdon on Tern. I'm totally confused and wonder whether anyone could give be some guidance as to how I might determine what the likely place of birth might have been.
Samuel's parents, Thomas Williams and Elizabeth Hazledine were married in 1807 in the same church in Longdon-upon-Tern parish. In the 1851 census his place of birth is noted as Erdington and in 1861 Roddington. The most likely candidate for a baptism in the IGI is a Thomas Williams in 1785 at Rodington but I understand there is both a town and parish called Rodington. If anyone is familiar with any of these places I would welcome any similar suggestions about a possible place of birth.

Longdon-upon-Tern and Longdon on Tern are two names for the same village.
There is a village nearby named Longnor.
Perhaps a typo or mis-reading.

Thank you very much Guy. Do you have any ideas about the other places I mentioned in the post? I'm in Australia and sometimes find it difficult to get my head around all this, particularly when parishes also seem to have the same names as actual towns or villages.

Hi
Genuki is a good place to start with locations:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/
Withington:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/Withington/index.html
Wellington:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/Wellington/index.html
Longdon/Tern:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/LongdonuponTern/index.html
Rodington:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/Rodington/index.html
It was quite usual for a parish to take the name of a village/town in the area where the church was located. Often the parish records will show a more specific location whereas the IGI normally just gives the parish.
Hope this helps

Whereas the others are all in the same broad area, I can't see an Erdington around there. The only one that I know of is in Birmingham. it might well be a misreading by the enumerator or transcriber :-\

My thanks to everyone who replied to my query. I was really trying to work out the likely place of birth for Samuel Williams conscience of the fact that I would never know for sure. The different places of birth noted in the census returns was confusing me. If I was born in Kensington I suppose I could say that I was born in London, Kensington or whatever parish Kensington falls into and they would all be correct but Kensington would be the most accurate. If Samuel had actually been born in the town of Longdon-upon- Tern I wonder why there would be later references to Withington and Wellington. I might just settle for the parish of Longdon-upon-Tern and be done with it.
Thank you all once again for your help. I had looked at Genuki Gadget but will go back with the leads you provided and do a bit more investigation.
Cheers
