Any information about these extended families prior to 1900 would be extremely welcome, especially how Jabez Ayres (1836-1891) came to buried in a Star of David grave in Lode churchyard.Despite the number of Jewish names in the tree, most of the family seem to have been Baptists. Also was Philip Cornwell c1798-1888 the son of William Cornwell and Ann Arber

Hi,
William Cornwell and Ann Arber married 3 Nov 1789 at Bottisham but don't appear to have had any children baptised there.
The only Philip I can find was baptised 28 Oct 1792 in Bottisham, son of Edward and Elizabeth (nee Hart).
The Cambridgeshire Family History Society are transcribing Lode parish registers but I don't know when they are available.
Have you come across a Prudence Ayres born about 1695, she was my 7x gt grandmother but her baptism has proved elusive!
Tempsford.

Sounds as though Prudence might have been an older sister of Henry Ayres bapt 1707 at Lode, but I have never encountered her before.

Hi,
Thanks for that. I'll keep on looking!

Hi,
The hexagram has a variety of meanings, and on a gravestone is not necessarily a an indication of Jewish faith. I think it can indicate the sabbath and also the union of opposites, but you might like to check out gravestone symbolism somewhere. In the 18th & 19th centuries every last thing on a gravestone seems to have had a significant meaning.

Many thanks for that Robert, as an amateur archaeologist I have a variety of sources available to check that out.

If the family were Baptists , it might explain why you can't find Prudence's baptism in the parish records.
Many of my family were Baptists and I have the same problem. I can find marriages before 1837 as they had to get married in the Anglican church ,and they were usually buried in the village churchyard but there's not many baptisms.

The Cornwells were Baptists and many were buried in the grounds of the Chapel in Lode. Iam descended from John Day Cornwell.
-
My Ayres grandparents were certainly Baptists, my great grandfather James Ayres married a Cornwell, they were Aunt and Uncle to Jack Cornwell VC. The Star of David mentioned on Jabez' grave (see above) may be something of a false trail (See also posting Jewish Community in Bottisham?). The entire village was very inter-related, and with repetition of forenames makes the tree very difficult to work out.

Hi Redroger, I will be a relation to you through the Ayres and Cornwells. My Sister in law was an Ayres before she married and she is descended from James Ayres and Emily Cornwell as well through their son Asher.
-
Your sister in law seems to be quite closely related to me. James Ayres and Emily Cornwell were one set of my mother's grandparents. I would liketo receive a personal message about this if you are willing.

My grandfather was James Ayres who travelled to Australia, youngest son of James I believe, interested to correspond by email.

Done and dusted! Except I made a slight error, I am a GREAT grandson of James (b1844) I think I said grandson in the email.

Hi Redroger and Everyone
Further to the Star of David on the gravestone, I read somewhere (possibly on here) that there was a 'fashion' at one time to use various symbols on gravestones regardless of their meaning or religious standing. I believe the posting referred to the Isaac/son family who also weren't Jewish despite their surname. In other words a bit of Victorian mischief apparently!
I seem to recall that Bottisham seemed to be at the centre of this behaviour.
Hope that helps; maybe someone else has read that post too?

Many thanks for that Briagh. Yes, it was my post. When a family member found the grave we thought there was a Jewish connection, the question then became why was he buried in a CofE graveyard? The family as others will tell is very complicated and seems to be related to most of the village.

Hi RedRoger
Moving on slightly but still on thread - see tonights' (Monday July 9th 2012) Cambridge News page 28 Nostalgia. There are several references to Cambridge Place and mention a marriage between James Northfield and Lucy Cornwell. Hopefully you will be able to read it on-line. www.cambridge-news.co.uk.
Several photos too!
best wishes

Sounds as though Prudence might have been an older sister of Henry Ayres bapt 1707 at Lode, but I have never encountered her before.
Further very recent research suggests a connection to Cromwell's Puritans and the Civil Wars of th 1640s and 50s. I have discovered a William Ayres who was a Captain in the Eastern Association of Cromwell's Army. He vanishes from the record around 1644, but a William Eyres also a Captain in the Eastern Association appears. As there was no standard spelling before c 1770 (Dr. Johnson) I have assumed it is the same man; but apart from his break with Cromwell and joining the Levellers I have no further information. Did he return to the Cambridge area? Is he the grandfather of Henry, and Prudence? To me Prudence does seem to be the type of name to be associated with the daughter 0f a Puritan Family. Probably had a sister Temperance! Can anyone help please?
