Title: Durham family in Brightside (1840's)
Post by: pauldurham131 on Sunday 08 February 09 13:42 GMT (UK)
Hi
I wonder if anyone has info on Durham's living in Sheffield in 1840's my G G G Grandfather was John Durham from Killamarsh but by 1841 he lived in Elm Tree Hill (Where ever that is or was) but the IGI doesn't list his baptism. I believe he married Hannah (Parkin) in 1838 in Sheffield.

I'm interested if anyone knows anymore family history to extend my tree

                                 Regards
                                       Paul

Hello Paul,

Elm Tree Hill can be located on a modern map as the junction of City Road, Mansfield Road and Hurlfield Road.

On the maps at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ (where the grid reference is 438300 384900) Elm Tree Hill can be seen as a few houses and a pub which must have been dominated by the works and heaps of Woodthorpe Colliery. Just down the road to the east was the village of Intake which also would have housed many miners. Today this is all part of Sheffield's urban sprawl.

I'm guessing that John DURHAM was a miner. I found these two baptisms at http://www.sheffieldindexers.com:

Durham, George (of Sheffield, born 1839-10-03).
Baptised October 20, 1839, by E Goodwin at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield.
Parents name(s) are Hannah & John (Miner).

Durham, Henry (of Sheffield, born 1841-10-08).
Baptised November 7, 1841, by T Sutton at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield.
Parents name(s) are Hannah & John (Collier).

Hugh

many Thanks Hugh
Henry was indeed my G G Grandfather and eventually moved to Wombwell where he and his sons all continued as Miners as did all the generations that followed including my father. I decided against this and moved to London to work for BOC I am after all scared of the dark.

I will now see if Derbyshire has something similar to the indexers and see if I can find Johns Baptism in Killamarsh.

                              Cheers for the links
                                                    Paul

Hugh
I have received Johns marriage cert it says his father was Thos. Durham and he lived in Rough Bank Park. You wouldn't happen to know where this is or where I may find info on Thos.

I have looked in 1841 Census and only Thos I have found is married to Martha not sure if he came from Killamarsh as his future census says not but born in Attercliffe.

                                     Hope you can help

                                                  Regards
