I have a Dinah Howard marrying an Elijah Clements in 1820. However no trace of a birth for a Dinah Howard c1793-1799 seems to fit the bill.
I also have an Annes Howard born to a Dinah Howard in 1816 with no father named.
I am wondering if perhaps Dinah married a Mr Howard who died c1816 and then remarried in 1820 using a married name?
Therefore, if someone could check to se if there are any Dinah's marrying in either Dennington (where censuses say Dinah was born) or Brundish (where Annes was christened) I could start to stretch my search a bit further?
Many thanks
Mike

I think if a mother's name only is given in birth/baptism records, then the child is illegitimate, however it is quite usual for just the father's name to be given on the birth/baptism record. So not sure if your theory is right. I hope someone will be along soon to help you.

Hi Mike
I am not sure that Dennington is covered by the IGI. Brundish is covered for some dates according to the Hugh Wallis site but none yet for 1800-1820.

The Howard/Clements marriage is on the Suffolk Marriage Index. It does not say that Dinah was a widow, so must presume she was single.
-
Hi Mike
as Sue has stated the Suffolk Marriage Index usually states if a subject was a widow(er) so I think that we can rule this out in Dinah's case, and the 1816 birth for her child as a HOWARD with no father mentioned seems to clinch this.
You do not say where you have looked for Dinah HOWARD' s baptism, (IGI is incomplete) but Lookups from the complete Dennington Parish Registers are available from The Suffolk Surname List.

Thanks as ever Rootschat folks :)
I've sent off a request to someone on the Suffolk Surnames List and have my fingers crossed :)
I did kinda think the second marriage was grasping at straws, but straws was all i had at the time!

Any chance that you are related to Charles Howard who was buried in Brundish church 11th April 1921 aged 67.As I am trying to find my Suffolk roots.

Welcome!
Are you just hoping to link up with others researching the same family or do you also need some general help? If the latter, please let us know what information you already have and I am sure our wonderful Suffolk RootsChatters would be delighted to assist.

My grandad Percy died when my dad was very young so we have known very little about that side of the family. My granmother maiden name was Seggons. They also had a son called Charles who died in 1956.Also we believe there was a Lester,Herbert,Alfred and a sister Doris. That side of the family all come from that area of Suffolk. We know they were mainly farm workers. If you think you can be of any help let me know what you would need.I have done very little of the work myself most of my work was in Suffolk when visited last spring .I hope I would find someone who is from that side my father could meet before he is to old to travel.

Hi
Charles seems to be living with his inlaws in 1881.

or ask for a lookup from the Dennington Register, though as Harriet's home parish was Brundish it is more likely that they were married there and unfortunately, there isn't a volunteer offering lookups for Brundish
http://www.terryaspinall.com/suffolk-surname-list/
It might be worth posting again asking for specific lookups for the family. You would need to check the 1911 census yourself however as we are not allowed to publish this because of copyright.

Reference your original post back in 2009 - I have been searching the Brundish records for my lot & found your Dinah Howard is recorded as a single woman:
Bpt 3 Mar 1816 Anna HOWARD daug of Dinah HOWARD sw Brundish, St Lawrence
Nothing for Dinah yet.

Lovely - thanks Keziah :)
I have a feeling that she may have been a Hayward as well - there seems to be a lot of name confusion round those parts...
I have Keziah's in my tree spanning several generations - I think it's a lovely name! Albeit subject to some awful transcriptions!
-
Mmmmm - be careful the name HOWARD is very very popular in these parts although I agree it could be distorted easily.
I can't see any HAYWARD burials in Brundish but there are certainly some in Dennington. I found only 2 HOWARD burial entries in Brundish:
Thomas HOWARD 21 Sep 1823 age 72
Sarah HOWARD Abode Badingham, 18 Jun 1828 age 77
I wonder if Sarah was Thomas' wife went to live in Badingham after his death. Could they have been related to Dinah?
I will keep my eyes open Brundish & Dennington PR's are currently on my hit list.
Keziah
ps. Came across 2 in my line & just loved the name as well - hence Keziah2 :)

I suggest that you go to the following web page:

run by nuttyred , she appears to have searched your family comprehensibly.

Elijah Clements married Dinah Howard at St Lawrence, Brundish on the 10th April 1820.
Care required two different Elijah Clements were living in Dennington & Brundish!
Dinah died in 1870..possibly, aged 77 !
Dennington baptisms:
Samuel Clements married Maria Leggatt
Samuel Kemp Clemence married Elizabeth Ann Farrow
William Clements married Susanna
Frederick Clements married Laura Smith
Eliljah Clements married Sarah Kemp
