Title: Marriage Certificate Manchester Cathredral
Post by: karens925 on Saturday 07 February 09 12:41 GMT (UK)
I am trying to get a copy of my Great Great Great Grandparents marriage certificate. They were married 3rd January 1835 in Manchester Cathedral. The groom was Solomon Beard the bride Hannah Downes. I have got stuck at this point and have different births for the them and hoping this certificate would clear it up.

I hope someone could help or point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen,

Welcome to RootsChat.

There are no certificates as such prior to 1 July 1837 when Civil Registration in England and Wales began.  The marriage entry in the parish register would not necessarily give their age and it will not give their fathers' names.

The format was as follows - the words in italics are the sort of thing that would be filled in by the officiating minister

John Brown of  this Parish
bachelor/widower
and Sarah Smith of Newtown Parish
spinster/widow
were married in this Church by Banns with the consent of
...................................................this twenty-first day of
September  in the year One thousand seven ( or eight) hundred and ninety-seven
By me James Long Vicar
This marriage was solemnised between us   ) John Brown
) Sarah Smith her mark X
In the presence of   ) William Brown
         ) Thomas Heath

Have you found you couple in 1841 and 1851?  In 1841 ages tended to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years and so may appear in consistent when you reach 1851 census.

Thankyou :)

I have found them on the 1841 Census but not the 1851. Hannah reappears on the 1861 census with her 7 children but no Solomon. I think he died 1859 and have ordered a copy of this death certificate.  There is a difference of five years in Hannah's birth year, 1841census says 1811 and the 1861 census says 1817.

So how do I proceed from here ??? I hate being stuck lol

1st the census age difference - reasons, the ages on the 1841 census were rounded up or down so are not accurate, the census in 1841 was taken in June whilst all the others are taken at the end of March/begining of April, also many people didn't know how old they were.

To get a copy of the entry in the Manchester Catherral register you can contact the archivist.  If you Google Manchester Cathedral you will find all the information there.

I would persist and try to find the family in 1851, if only to find out how much incosistency there might be, and in 1871.  Many women did not age as much as you might expect between census  ;)

Thank you

I did think there would be a few inconsistencies with DOB regarding ladies  ;D

They all emigrated to the states in the 1870's, although I have found two brothers in the 1871 census I cant find Hannah. So I presumed she left before with her other sons.

Many of 1851 census pages were damaged and left out of the original listings on Ancestry etc.  However they have been re-examined and lots of new data gleaned. You can inspect them on www.mlfhs.org.uk.  They are called the unfilmed census.  I see there are lots of Beards listed on it, try all the children's names as different parts of the pages are missing, so parents for example can be illegible, but others in the household are visible.

Hi Karen

There's a Solomon Beard, policeman living at 30 Sidney street, Salford in the 1850 Slater's Directory of Manchester & Salford.

There are loads of entries for that address on the unfilmed but nothing that looks like Solomon or Hannah.  There are some other Beards & some other policemen.

Is there an equivalent of the LRO's database of Policemen for Manchester as it looks like one of the son's was a Policeman too?

Ha!

Found them  ;D

Transcribed as Bran, probably due to the damage to the records, but the names & occupation & ages fit.

Salford, Greengate district HO 107/2223
26 Great George Street

Solomon Bran; head; M; 40; Police Constable; Manchester
Hannah Bran; wife; M; 37; Manchester
Joseph Bran; son; 15; Manchester
Charles Bran; son; 12; Manchester
Amelia Jane Bran; dau; 10; Manchester
John Bran; son; 7; Manchester
George Bran; son; 2; Manchester

There are some other entries below George but so much is missing, it is impossible to say if they are connected to the Beard family or not.

However, further down at 28 Great George Street, there is:

William Br....; head; M; 43; Police Constable; Lancashire, .....
Ellen Br...; wife; M; 33; Cheshire, Timperley
George Br....; son; 20; Manchester
& other children Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, William, Jane Ann, Emma etc

Given the address & the occupation I wondered if they could be relatives?

Regards
SandraC

This matches what I have from the 1861

Hannah Beard 1817
Joseph 1836
Charles . F 1838
Amelia jane 1841
George Beard 1848

Although there is no John  :(

Also on the 1841 census there is Solomon as a Thatchman and he became a policeman in the 1840's. Also there is an Elizabeth Beard b1840 and isn't on the 1861 census, so she had also died by 1851 or  ???

Yes Joseph the son was a policeman in the 1860's

There is a police museum in Manchester with very helpful staff, but their records start quite late (1858, I think).

This is the email address police.museum[at]gmp.police.uk.  I have replaced the ampersand with [at]

Hello Karen, Guess we'll see if you're still pursuing this. My name is Barry Beard, and I have just learned (I believe) that Soloman Beard is my great-great-great-grandfather.  I am the son of Kenneth Beard, who is the son of Warren Beard, who is the son of William Beard, who is the son Charles Beard,  who is the son of Soloman.  I do have a copy of a UK newspaper article (brief, but detailed, though it doesn't name family members) describing the death of Soloman, on duty, in 1859.  If you receive this notice perhaps we can discuss this more?  Best regards, Barry

Hi Barry

A warm welcome to Rootschat!

Karens925 hasn't been on the site for a few years but hopefully, she will receive a message to say that there is a reply to her post if her email address is still the same.

Hi Barry,

Received your friends message on another site and looking forward to comparing information. I also believe I have a photo of Charles Frederick and his son which I can send you.
