Title: Edward William Lewis and Maria Burns Auckland
Post by: crystal blue on Friday 06 February 09 23:53 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find details of a marriage between Edward William Lewis born 1820 Gloucestershire came to NZ with the 58th Foot Rutlandshire reg.  He married Maria Burns at Auckland late 1840s.  Their children all born at AK - Angelina born 1850, Edward William 1852, Maria born 1853 and Andrew Jonathan 1859.

Maria Burns ( I have been told passed away 1862)?  I believe Maria's brother lived in Thames (John Burns) and they may have come from Barony Glasgow.

Any information or advice would be welcomed.

Thanks
Crystal

Hi Crystal

Unfortunately the marriage of Edward LEWIS and Maria BURNS, does not appear on the NZ Marriage Index.
[I can find a marriage for daughter Angelina to Henry SLADE 1867 ... and there apears to be marriages for the other children also.   Do you want the (index) details of these ?]

Dear Althea and Lucy

Thank you both very much for your responses.

Lucy would all NZ marriages have to be on the register or is it looking like they may have got married overseas??  Thanks for your kind offer regarding marriage details for their children -  I would appreciate details of the marriage of Andrew Jonathan born 1853.

I am desperately seeking more information on Edward and Maria - would their parents names be on their death certificates??

Once again thanks for your help!

Kind regards
Crystal

Hi Chrystal
What do you know of the army service?
That could lead to family details

A google shows this regiment had been in Aus, so the marriage could have been there..thats why I wonder if you know when he was discharged

A birth notice I saw for one child 1852 had him recorded as a carpenter.

Hi Chrystal

It does seem more likely that the marriage of Edward William and Maria, took place outside of NZ.

From NZ Marriage Index

Andrew John* LEWIS     (*shown as "John" rather than
Eliza BURNS                                        "Jonathan"  )
Year - 1885    (Folio # 2132)

[There is quite a lot of information (mainly submitted records) showing for this LEWIS family at "familysearch.org".]

Dear Althea and Lu

Thanks for your assistance and responses - you have given lots of information and guidance on the way forward.

Althea I think I will send for the copy of the death certificate for the Edward Lewis at Symonds Street and I am sure that Edward William Lewis is his son.  Thanks also for the information regarding the 58th Foot - that will certainly keep me busy!!   I have posted recently on the Glous site too.

I do not know of a Richard Lewis so I dont think at this stage there is a connection.

Lu I will also get the certificate for Andrew and thanks for posting the details for me- I am yet to follow up on the trail of his wife Eliza Burns - that is another job on the list!

At the moment my main aim is to find out for definite where Edward and Maria Lewis came from - as they are the beginning of our family in NZ.

Thanks again to you both - your help and advice is very much appreciated!

Kind regards
Crystal :) :)

Hi there,
I too am a descendant of this couple, through their eldest child, Elizabeth Margaret (known as Margaret). They came to NZ as a married couple on the Lord Auckland, arriving on 24 March 1845. I am told they married in Scotland, which was where Edward met Maria. He was from Bristol, born 1 March 1821.
Regards,
Maureen

Hi Crystal Blue,
My name is (Kenneth) Stuart Burns, and I live in Auckland, NZ.  My great, grandfather is Andrew Burns, brother of Maria (nee Burns) Lewis and John Truman Burns (baker).
John Burns married Agnes Leitch in 1846, in Glasgow Cathedral.  He is found in the 1851 census of Scotland.  He and my great grandfather settled in Thames, NZ.  We have lots more on the Burns Family and a little more on Maria Lewis (nee Burns).
