I'm hoping that some kind person out there will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm looking for relatives of my cousin - dont have too much information about them, only that they emmigrated to Australia from Leeds, West Yorkshire, in or around 1951 under the assisted passage scheme. Dont know where they sailed from in England or where they landed in Oz. We think it might be Perth but not 100% sure.
Can anyone suggest where we might start to look for passenger lists etc.

You can search the Passenger Index on
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx
"Search as guest user" and on the next page "passenger index" is on the top right of the page.
Good luck!

Hi busybod,
If you would like help in your search, you could give us given names and possibly ages and occupations .
Sue

Hi busybod
Apart from the "passenger index" mentioned by Keengeni, you could also try the general search. Many (but not all) of the assisted immigrants are listed with names/ages. There are also some "applications for assisted passage" e.g.. this one
RUSHWORTH Albert Edward Victor [Application by British migrants for assisted passage] 1951
As Sue mentioned, a given name will reduce the number of hits on the search. It will also provide for a death search in BDM cds and/or cemetery lists. (realising that most, if not all, of the family may still be living)
If you are searching for living relatives - you can try the white pages online
www.whitepages.com.au
Have you checked for your family on the findmypast shipping list? - it is a pay site - I don't have a subscription but you can search for no charge

From the National Archives site
Index to passenger arrivals
Search for passengers arriving by ship in Fremantle and other Western Australian ports between January 1921 and 15 January 1950; or arriving at Perth airport between 1944 and 15 January 1950.
**Index compiled through a Work for the Dole project in Perth, Western Australia**
Does the index include those in transit to other ports :-\
-
Hi terra,
;D From the search page [ a bit further down the page from which you are quoting ;D
Sue
Note: Many ships bound for the eastern Australian states passed through Fremantle. The Fremantle passenger lists include all those passengers who disembarked in Fremantle. They often also include all other passengers who travelled further on the same ship and disembarked in other Australian or overseas ports.
From 1944 the passenger lists include those for aircraft arriving at Perth airport. The lists for Qantas flights usually include brief details for those enroute for other airports. The lists for other airlines only have details for those leaving the aircraft in Perth.

Passenger lists are usually needed for the "first point of entry" into a country for immigration purposes. I will never forget the 3 hour queue many moons ago when we landed in Hawaii on the way to mainland US
The naa shipping index gives final destination as an item of data - have you not used it at all terra?

Thanks everyone for your responses.
I've looked on the passenger index on the naa archives and came up with nothing. This index, though, only goes from January 1921 to January 1950. Just outside my time range!!
I've also searched the find my past index, which goes up to 1960, and again drawn a blank. If anyone else wants to have a look, you're more than welcome.
Their names were: William Redvers RUSHWORTH and
Gwendoline RUSHWORTH (nee OATES)
I'm not sure of their dates of birth, I think it will have been somewhere around 1928 give or take a few years.
I'll try the white pages next and hope that comes up with something. Trouble is, we know that Gwen and Bill had several children, but we dont know their names. The reason I am doing this is that I am doing my own family tree and in the process of doing so I came across a message on a website from one of the Rushworth kids. I recognised the family names and got in touch with my cousin, who responded to the message on the website, but as yet we have heard nothing. This message was originally put on the site by them in 2003. It's so galling knowing that they're trying to get in touch with relatives here, but we cant do anything to get in touch with them. They do have aunts and an uncle here still living but they are all getting on in years and it would be lovely if they at least could make contact with them before anything happens
Anyway, thanks everyone once again and wish me luck.

Just to say I think we can now put this one to bed. I've found them on the find my past site.
Thanks to everyone again.

Hi,
Just in finishing up then, I will add this in case you have not seen it.
I'm not sure of their dates of birth, I think it will have been somewhere around 1928 give or take a few years.
At least it will give you a birthdate.
Ryerson index http://ryerson.ozgenealogy.com/search.php
RUSHWORTH, William Redvers. Death notice. 30MAY2002. age 79. Late of Seven Hills Daily Telegraph

And Again,
I'm not sure of their dates of birth, I think it will have been somewhere around 1928 give or take a few years.
This is a possibility for the birth of Gwendoline from
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
Gwendoline Oates b. Leeds 1927 [mother's name Jones] June 1/4. 9b 431

Thanks Sue for the death notice. At least I have an idea now of where to start looking for the Rushworths in the white pages. I've found 1 already - W Rushworth, First Avenue, Seven Hills, so fingers crossed!!
Sparrett - thanks for Gwen's birth details, that's spot on. Although I've still not been able to trace any record of her death. Think it was about 1963.
Thanks both once again.
Busybod

Hi,
Why do you think Gwen's death was....
Think it was about 1963.
??
Although elderly, she may still be living. :D
Sue
-
Hi Sparrett
No, I know from the message on the internet that Gwen is deceased. My cousin thinks it was about '63.

AH yes, It was there all the time. ;D
2009/1964 RUSHWORTH, GWENDOLINE. father HERBERT mother U/K SYDNEY

Hi Sue
Yes, that looks like the one. May I just ask you where you got it from. Being relatively new to this research, I dont understand the 2009/1964 figures. Does that mean she died in 1964? Sorry to appear thick!!
Busybod

Hi bus,
I am sorry for omitting the source.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births
The figures you refer to 2009/1964 form the complete registration number.
the '1964' part gives the year.
A thorough reading of the introductory pages on the site will give a lot of information on how to best use it. ;D
ADDING
Have just modified the link to take you to the birth search page. Easy navigation from there ;D

Thanks Sue,
Thanks very much once again. I hope that I don't have to bother anybody any further. I'm sorry for appearing so stupid. I've tried the Seven Hills number in Sydney and just got an answer machine, they must be at work. I'll try again in the morning. Will let you know if I have any success.
Thanks yet again.

Thanks Sue
You're a star. I found it.

Hi busbod,
There is nothing stupid about the learning process :D
The Australian chatters are here to help and we get as much fun from finding a piece of information and passing it on as you and others get from receiving it.
I'm sure we are all waiting for you to successfully make contact with the phone number and hearing the outcome.

Well said Sue :)
My only suggestion would be - when you call have a few thoughts on what to say ;D I called once hoping to find family & when they said - Oh yes - that was my husband's grandmother (first call & I had a few possibilities) - I didn't know what to say next - not like me to be lost for words ::)

Hi Sue and Trish
Thanks for your responses. Yes Trish, I know what you mean about knowing what to say. I've just rung a D Rushworth from the white pages (it transpires that Gwen and William had a little boy called Dennis when they went). Anyway, this chap wasn't the one (he was called Douglas) but he was very chatty. Turned out his parents had emigrated from Leeds and his father was called William Vause Rushworth. Talk about so near yet so far.
Still, I'll keep trying and let you know if and when I come up with anything.

Hi everyone
This is just to let you know that I've found them. I spoke to my cousin's cousin Bill this morning in Sydney. He was my last try (the last Rushworth in the book with the initial W). I knew that his Father had died in the seven hills area so I thought it's got to be worth a try, he could be called Bill after his father and hey presto - correct. He was delighted to hear from me. I've given my cousin his e-mail address and she is going to contact him.
So thank you very much again to everyone who has helped me - I couldn't have done it without you!!!

Hi Busbod,
That is a most wondeful result ;D ;D ;D
It will give a lot of chatters a lot of joy to read that you have got the outcome you hoped for.

Hi Sue and Trish,
Yes, I agree. As my Mum always says "it just goes to show what a little perseverance can do".

my pop was william redvers rushworth.. my dads mum was gwendoline i never met her....

May I ask who you are then please.
Busybod
-
Hi Rushworth
Busybod again. I think you made a mistake in your earlier message. You say your Pop was William Redvers Rushworth and your Dad's Mum was Gwendoline. Dont you mean your Dad's wife?
Would you be Michael or Debra by any chance? I understand that Bill Rushworth married again after Gwen died and his wife had a large family. Are you one of the children of his second wife, in which case you have no connection to us.
Regards
Busybod

Rushworth
Suspect that you are Debra, but can't think why on earth you've put a message on here if you don't want to be contacted.
