Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me?
Up to now I've been looking for William in Somerset because he seems to have been married to a Phoebe Humpthrys in 1832 and had at least one child there.
The main info I have on him, relates to the 1841 census, where I have him in Southampton, he died in 1845 in Southampton.
Alot of my favorites in Somerset possibly lived much longer, so I,vie turned my attention to Wiltshire, where some W.Ruddock's were born.
His wife was born in Wiltshire too!
I'd be grateful if anyone can help me
Many Thanks

Hi Brian
I have no expertise in the area and have simply been browsing looking for your family in online records. In 1861 I find Phoebe with Elizabeth and Emma - Elizabeth born Southampton and Emma born Bath. Phoebe is listed as born Wilton in Wiltshire. There is also an entry for Emma on the IGI - an I batch - which are somewhat strange as IGI batches go! This idicates a baptism very near to Bath (Walcot), so probably correct.
In 1881 I may have Frederick - listed as born Bath - as a seaman onboard Cherbourg SS aged 48 and married.
Where did William and Phoebe marry? They do not appear to have any children in Wiltshire, so is the only Wiltshire connection related to Phoebe's place of birth? Do you have the parish record for the marriage - they sometimes give the parish of both parties to the marriage.
The IGI gives little joy - A William born 1805 in Shepton Mallet (extracted entry) and a submitted entry for an 1805 birth in West Knoyle, Wiltshire. The parent names don't seem to give any clues.

Dear Trish,
Many thanks for your reply and help, it is much appreciated.
I'm searching back via Frederick.
William and phoebe married on the 25th september 1832 in St Swithins, Walcot, near Bath.
I found this on the freereg site but it didn't give any real detail.
Yes the only real reason I chose the Wiltshire route was because of the birth connection to Phoebe and the fact that some W. Ruddocks were born in Wilts, around that time too (1803)!
The two W. Ruddock's you mentioned are being considered and the Shepton Mallet one was a favorite but a W. Ruddock from S Mallet was still alive after my ancestors death in 1845!?? So I have assumed that this was the one born in 1805.
Thanks once again

Most unfortunate your man died before 1851, or alternatively he could have stayed in his county of birth for the 1841 census! But these comments are probably about as useful as my help. :(
If you can access or request the full parish record of the marriage it may help (unless that is what is given on freereg) - witnesses and/or parish of the parties - but there may be no more information.

Hi Trish,
Thank you for your interest and yes he could have been more considerate in the 1841, 51 census! ;D
Your idea of hunting for a possible full parish record of their marriage may be useful.
Many thanks

Hello
My partner is descended from this William Ruddock and still lives in Southampton. His parish marriage record sadly does not furnish any further useful information (well the copy in Bath Record Offfice at least). Are you related to William?

Dear Seosamhmacd,
Yea I am related to this William Ruddock, i guess I must be related to your partner and I too still live in Southampton.
I haven't got any research on me but my line goes something like this:- William R- Frederick William R- Fred george R- Percy R. He had a daughter Iris, who was my grandmother!
It's great hearing from you, how does your line go?
Fred

Dear Fred
My partner's line goes: William R; Frederick William R; Holsea Tom R; Frank Edward R; Frank Tom R. She was in touch with other Ruddock relations in Somerset a few years ago. They lived on the Waterside before moving up there.
I've done a bit of family tree work. If you're interested I could try and pass it on. A couple of years ago we went down and got a print out of where the graves of the Ruddocks are on the Common (unfortunately the plots in question didn't seem to have any headstones).
If I have it right your Frederick george and Holsea Tom were brothers. The latter lived in St. Denys and appears to have been a shoe-maker. Frederick lived in Valley Road and was a labourer. He died in 1941. Percy, his son was born in 1889 and died in 1965. Does that sound about right?

Dear Joseph,
Yes I would be very grateful for any help, in particular the graves of the Ruddock's sounds interesting. I was down there the other week looking round the grave yard!
That sounds right, that Frederick George and Holsea were brothers.
You've helped me out already with his and Percy's death dates, so thank you very much!
Many thanks

Dear Fred
Phoebe R (william's widow) died 20/11/1886 in Portswood Road. In the 1861 Census she was recorded as a lodging house keeper at Chandos Street. In 1871 she was a retired lodging house keeper living with her daughter Elizabeth Archer (the address is unclear but it could be Portswood Road)
Frederick William R married Elizabeth Smart Rogers 9/2/1858 at the Above Bar Chapel, So'ton. He died 30/1/1917. She predeceased him 22/1/1891. She was buried on the Common 28/1/1891 in section B011 plot 248. Frederick followed her into the same grave 5/2/1917.
As Trish pointed out above Frederick was on board the SS Cherbourg at the time of the 1881 census. I went down to the record office a few weeks ago and looked at the crew agreement for the first 6 months of that year. It said he had been on the same boat the year before, but I couldn't find him on that agreement. He is recorded as an able seaman. The boat went between So'ton, Le Havre, St. Malo, Cherbourg and Jersey in those 6 months.
In the 1891 census Frederick William was living in Priory Road with a son, George, a daughter, Annie, and a visitor. He was recorded as a civil assistant at the Ordnance Survey. In 1901 he is still in Priory Road but is now living on his own means. In 1911 he is still in Priory Road (different no.) and describes himself as a retired merchant seaman.
Hope this helps.
I apologise if you knew any of this already.
If there is anything else ask and I amy be able to help.

Dear Joseph,
Thank you very much for the detailed information, you've added some meat to the bones for me, thanks!
In particular thank you for the plot number of the grave.
I will keep in touch and if I find anything, in particular William Ruddock circa 1803, I'll let you know.
Kind Regards
Fred
