Title: Eli David Hayward
Post by: mongoose2 on Thursday 05 February 09 19:42 GMT (UK)
Help please people am trying to find the aboves birth in 1915.

What is known so far and yes he died in 2002 in Kingston on Thames

his death cert says birthdate is 19/1/1915 but without cert I am assuming born Chelsea where his father Eli James Hayward married in the 3rd Q 1901 to either Winifred Brettell or Mary Elizabeth Halls.

I have checked the 1911 census however that throws up another problem Eli James Hayward is living in Battersea with 3 children but the transcription says his wife is Carrie who is said to be born Cliffe, Kent which is not a Winifred nor a Mary.
I do have access to Eli David Haywards marriage cert which confirms Eli James as his father and the age tallies with the death cert but there is no Eli David Hayward born in 1915 so help needed.

Is it possible that birth wasnt registered because it was during WW1

Go back to the 1901 marraige.
Work out which girl married which groom (state the second groom)!
check death indexes for wife.
check for re-marriage.

what (other than name of Carrie) are her details (age, birthplace, how long married)
what other kids appear in 1911?

Pauline thanks for replying. What I have from the transcript of the 1911 is as follows

Eli James Hayward Head Married M 33 Moulders Labourer Wiltshire Devonzes (devizes)
Carrie hayward Wife 11 years F 29 Kent Cliff (cliffe nr Rochester)
Emily G Hayward Dau 7 Chelsea London
Frederick E G Hayward Son 9 Chelsea London
Alice W G Hayward dau 2 Chelsea London

the brackets are mine

other than order the certificate for the marriage or get a birth cert for one of the children I cannot see an immediate way of working out which wife is which. My 3rd Cousin is going to order the cert as its her family.

The other man in 1901 was abraham HAREWOOD

We saw that but I dont see how Eli D Smith becomes Hayward. I have found sometimes a small variation in name but not Smith to Hayward.

my couzzie has been trying to find the birth for 6 years.

Firstly ask the registrar if the "D" is for David. If it is, then I'd buy it.
It's too big a co-incidence.

Hi don’t know if I’m a bit late to this thread.

But Eli David Hayward is my great grandads brother.

I have found a copy of their fathers Eli James Hayward ww1 enrolment documents.

On it states that his wife was Carrie Davis is deceased in 1915 they were married in what looks like at johns church Chelsea in 1904.

However on his service records his next of kin is listed as mrs Carrie smith and she is classed as friend they are bother living in the underworld passage in Chelsea.

This is where it gets confusing because later cenus record state he is living with a carrie Hayward after his wife death. But I can’t find a death certificate for Carrie Davis or where he married Carrie smith.

I believe eli David and Harold were possibly Carrie smiths Children as there seems to be a slight age gap between them and the other children.

Further more to make it even more confusing their were two Eli James Hayward’s born in the same year and both living in Chelsea.

It’s a mind field I just can’t crack.

Gertrude Lilian Smith
Baptism    25 Jun 1905    Worlds End St John, Kensington and Chelsea
Father:    Charles Smith, horsekeeper
Mother:    Carrie Smith
Address 17 Milkman St

There's a very likely Gertrude in the Chelsea workhouse in 1911 - admitted in February, dob 1/6/1905. Still there in the workhouse. A month later, placed into a poor law school. Lists father Charles, then illegible - dob again 1/6/1095

Carrie Davis marries CHarles Richard SMith in 1904. They appear still to be together in 1910, when Winifred Georgina was born

in November 1910 Charles, Gertrude and Thomas were admitted to the Chelsea workhouse

1911 - this could be Mary Hayward? She's working away from home and Carrie has moved in with Eli?

I also found a marriage certificate for a Carrie Davis who married a Charles Richard smith and became Mrs smith at St. John’s church Chelsea in 1904  so they are Potentially they are the same person. But I’m not sure.

Maybe she moved in with Eli James Hayward and never officially married him.

I dont know if anyone has better luck then me?

On his army records Eli states he married Carrie on the same date Carrie marries Charles Smith
How on earth can anything be trusted

Eli dies in 1942 in Oxford
Carrie dies in ? 1960 Oxford
But the army record says Carrie was deceased when Eli filled in his army attestation record, I do believe that was so that if he dies the army look after his kids
