Please can anyone help Have always believed my biological father was in the 7th Armoured Division of the Eight Army I sent for my original birth certificate (as I was adopted) it states Robert James Osbourne Hancock Rifleman 6917836 Rifle Brigade as I can never work out what regiment is what would they have been in 7th Armoured Division. Cannot sent for records as not classed as kin once adopted. Thankyou for reading

Not much help but will give you an idea of the units serving. Yours would be infantry.

You might try writing to them explaining your circumstances to see whether they will grant you access. If the person is still alive then you may have probs the same as any closed info. Soz but its worth a try it will only cost you postage in the initial step. If granted, then it may be considerably more expensive.
Good luck

Incidentally the 7th (Royal Armoured Corp) is normally associated with
the Royal Dragoon Guards (4th/7th), which along with a number of other Regiments formed the Royal Armoured Corp 1939. The 7th, along with another six, was a Cavalry Regiment of the Line.

With respect he would hardly be a rifleman in the Royal Dragoons (An armoured formation). Riflemen were most certainly infantry. I not 100% certain but would have thought the private soldier in the Dragoons were called troopers?
We are talking about the 7th armoured DIVISION also known as the desert rats. A division being made up of a number of Brigades which in turn is made up of a number of Regiments, battalions etc consisting of all arms of the army. Armour, Infantry, Engineers, Signals, Reme etc.

Thought it was the 7th Armoured Division, not Brigade although 7th Armoured Bde adopted the desert rat in another form as their insignia. Spent some time at their place once in Soest, Germany. Quite near the Mohne dam which we walked right round twice. Useless information sorry but at the time we were very peed off about it.

The best and closest "cinematic" portrayal I have seem is Ioan Gruffudd in "Warriors" about Bosnia, some years ago on the BBC...
