Adam
-
Hi Adam
many thanks for that.
Unfortunatley I don't think the Thompsons are the ones I am interested in, so it won't be necessary for the later ones. I'm just going through the Rowes now and it looks promising.
You seem to be doing half my work for me. :o
Can I ask you adam, how do you know which inscriptions to do that have not been done before? Is there a listing anywhere? I am thinking of doing the same as you have done for my local area in Leeds, but don't want to duplicate. Any advice welcome!! ;D ;D
Lynn
-
Hello Lynn.
First look at the local history websites. Check their publications page to see what churches or cemeteries have been completed.
Go to the place that you would like to work on and have a walk round, checking the condition of the gravestones.
I find the industrial areas are usually better than the country ones because they do no have the amount of the dreaded lichen.
Wait until the autumn to start(less grass, weeds and trees/bushes to struggle against)
All you need then is a soft brush and a little hand spray.
Never try to scrape a stone because that only speeds up the weathering etc.
Adam
-
Hi Adam
Thankyou for the advice.
Guess where I'll be going next weekend?? ;D
Lynn
-
Hello Adam.

Hello Adam, could you please tell me what you have on Moody.

-
Thank you Adam, i'm not sure at the moment if they are my moodys.
Kabeja.
-
Hello Kabeja.
Here is another Moody inscription that may be yours. It is from Crook Municipal churchyard. If you do not know the area, Crook is only about 3 miles from Tow Law.

Also the above Hannah Moody, who died May/1/1903 aged 73 years.

Adam
-
Hello Adam,
The Moodys at Crook certainly seem to be our lot ! In the 1881 and 1891 censuses they are living at 22 Institution Terrace, Crook and Billy Row. The information i have for this part of the family is fairly limited but your information has filled in some blanks. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Robert was from Tanfield and Hannah {nee Temperley] was from Shotley. As far as i know they had four children.
Catherine b.1857 at Blackhill, Co. Durham.
William b.1859 Wolsingham, Tow Law. This may well be the William you have on the MI from Tow Law, unfortunatley that MI doesn't have an age ! We don't have any other details for him about marriage or children but if it is our William then the MI at Tow Law says he was a father. Thanks for that, more research to be done. The private J.T. Moody may or may not be one of ours, another lead to follow.
Hannah b.1861, Roddy Moor, Hamsterly. We have very little more information on her but if this MI is the same family, which i am very confident it is, then i now know a date of death and will be able to obtain a death certificate. I had no idea she died so young !
Elizabeth Ann b.1870 Roddy Moor, Hamsterly. Before seeing this MI i had a possible death date for her as 1894. Now it seems certain that she died in 1900 and we should be able to obtain a death certificate for her to confirm this.
The only other information we have on this family is that the eldest child Catherine was married to John Pallister in 1880 and they had five children as far as we know. All were born either in Crook or Waterhouses near Esh. In the 1901 census they were living at Brandon and Byshottles, Durham.
Do you have any MI information on Pallister's in these areas ?
Not having lived in England for some years, and visiting infrequently, to have access to this information is of great value to us and very much appreciated. Once again thank you for your time and effort. Keep up the good work.
Best regards.
Kabeja.
-

Thank you hope you could help as l have been told he is buried in tow law the church on the top of billy row hill but not 100 % but no could tell me where,
Keeping my fingers crossed
Tay
-
Hello Tay. I think you have had the wrong information about the church that you are inquiring about.
The church near Billy Row is the church of St Thomas, Stanly, Crook.
There is one Dawson gravestone and six for Bell.
I can post them on the board, but they will have to be posted on the correct board so things do not get confused.
There is a graveyard a Tow Law with 3 Bell surnames and 2 Dawson.
Once again you can have those as well but they will also have to be on the correct board.

Hello
My great great grand-father Walter Scott is reportedly buried in Tow Law Cemetery. He died 18th July 1909 aged 66. I notice that you have named a Scott in your list. I was hopeful that you could tell me whether this is my ancestor. O by the way he was a circus proprietor and was supposed to have performed in front of queen victoria.
thanking you
Michelle
-
Hello Michelle. There are 3 gravestones for Scott but unfortunately none for a Walter Scott.
I had a look at all other graveyards inscriptions in the area with out luck.
Adam
-
Hello Adam
Many many thank yous for answering. I am a bit disappointed not to find my great great grandfather, never mind. I wonder why it was reported he was buried at Tow Law! Is there more than one cemetery there? Out of curiosity what are the first names of the Scotts buried there?
I really appreciate your help
all the best
Michelle
-
Hello Michelle. There is no reason to doubt that your great great grandfather
was not buried at Tow Law.
Lots of gravestones have not survived the ravages of time or the politically correct and over sensitive council, that odered the removal of what they say were potentially unsafe gravestones.
There are 837 at the Dans castle cemetery and 21 at St Philips church yard.
Even the St Philip's churchyard have gravestones that have been pushed over to lay face down. I don't think the in scription will never be seen again.
As for other graveyard and cemeteries in the area. I have done all the inscriptions and Walter Scott is not among them.
Here are the Scott gravestone inscriptions from Tow Law:-
In loving memory of William Scott, of North View, Tow Law, who died March/19/1883 aged 65 years.
Also Hannah Scott, wife of the above who died January/15/1900 aged 76 years.
S J Scott of the Tow law Hotel, born January/23/1869 died May/1/1908.
In loving memory of Eric Scott, who died December/1/1941 aged 82 years.
(that one was difficult to read)

Thank you so much for your help Adam.
My Walter had a brother and son called William. So I wonder if the William is connected.
Anyway, i t is brilliant you have recorded all the names, that not all will be lost forever.

Hello Adam,I have a mystery family who disappeared from Tow Law after the 1871 census. Would you check and see if there are any MI's for them.
Henry Robinson - b1831
his wife Margaret b1838
twin daughters Sarah and Ellen bDec 1866
and daughter Elizabeth b1869.
Sarah or Ellen is my g grandmother. Her marriage cert gives her name as Sarah Ellen, but we don't know if it was Sarah or Ellen that died. ???
Thanks for your time
Jammies
-
Hello Jammies. There is not a gravestone for Henry or Margaret Robinson
at Tow Law.
What was the surnames of the daughters who married?
Adam
-
My g grandma (Sarah Ellen) married a John Smith on Mar 3 1888 at Lanchester registry office, and their first child was born Jul 18 1888 in Leadgate.
I have no further info about Elizabeth Robinson.
And I don't know if Sarah died and Ellen took her name - or vice versa.
And researching all these John Smiths - well.....
Thanks
Jammies
-
Hello Jammies. Sorry no gravestones for your Smiths or Robinsons in the 10,000 or so gravestone inscriptions.
I had a look at the combination of John and John plus Sarah Ellen.
Likewise for a Henry and Henry and Margaret Robinson.
There are 13 gravestones for Robinson at Tow Law so the Robinson name is well represented but unfortunately not yours.

Thanks for trying. I appreciate your time

Hi Adam
Could you let me know what details you have for Rutter & Mcluskey?
Many Thanks
Lynn
-
Adam,
I would be interested in any info you have on Frain
Thanks
Bill
-
Hello Bill. Not a lot on Frain. There are no gravestones in the 1800's.
Here are the two from Tow Law.
Of your charity pray for the soul of Elizabeth Frain, beloved wife of David Frain, who died May/3/1937 aged 32 years.
There is another on that I will send via the personal mail because it is a long way past my cut off date of the 1950's.
Adam
-
Hi Adam
I wonder if you could give details on any Cowan burials - if not too many!
Thanks
Bill
-
Hello Bill. As it happens there are only two. Here they are:-
In loving memory of our dear mother Annie Cowan, who died April/22/1937.
In loving memory of our dear brother I.I. or it could be LL Cowan, who died March/10/1939.
Both were identical large glazed flower holders with the inscriptions.

Thanks Adam
Bill

Hi Adam could you please let me know any inscriptions you have with the surnames
(Bates ) and
(Todd )please thank you lynnej

Hello Lynnej. The one Bates and the four Todd gravestones at Tow law are all after the 1950's, making them unsuitable to be shown on this page.

Hello! Would it be possible to know which FAIRLESS people were buried at Tow Law? Thank you kindly! Pat
-
Hello patrexjax:- Only one small stone for Fairless :-
In loving memory of Sarah Fairless, who died February/8/1909 aged 9 months.
I looked at the total list of fairless named stones and was surprised that there are only 6.
And they are at Wolsingham, Tow law, Crook, Escomb.
Adam
-
Hello Adam, Thank you. As I suspected, most of my Fairless' from the 1900's were from North of the River Tyne -- my more ancient ones from 1700's were Co. Durham, but around Washington area, I think. The 1800's were, I surmise, a mix of the two as they migrated into Northumberland. Thanks for the look up. :D Pat

Hello Adam,
I was wonderinging if you could tell me of any Rowell's from Tow Law. We have a Thomas Rowell and his son John Wilson Rowell who came to Australia. Thankyou Adam in anticipation and what a great job you are doing
Yvonne :
-
Hello ivonne. There is just this one from Tow law:-
In loving memory of Thomas Rowell of Ivy cottage, who died January/26/1895 aged 87 years.
Also Jane, wife of the above, who died september/1/1897 aged 83 years.
Were your family Catholics? This couple are also recorded in the Catholic records for St Joseph's at Tow Law.
Adam
-
Hi Adam,
Thank you so much for your reply, his wife was Jane Wilson and I think you may have the correct family. They had a child John Wilson Rowell ( the only child I am aware of but I am sure their would have been more) born May 1851 in North Bedburn Durham.
Jane Wilson was supossed to be born in Hilton Yorkshire. Thomas would have been born approx 1805 to 1810 so time is correct. I would love any info from the catholic registers however I am uncertain of their religion
Many thanks again
Yvonne fom OZ
-
Hello Ivonne. Yes it is the same family. The baptisms that I have are for the Rowell family with the maiden name Wilson.
They had 5 children.
If you require the information go to the "look up offers Wolsingham and Tow Law catholic" and put your request on that page.
I do not think the look up offer page is working very well.
The marriage and the Jarrow inscriptions show lots of numbers but they were done on this page and were moved in November.
Other than that I can not see that there have been any replies.(I may be wrong)
Anyway it would be nice to see it working. Just read the how to use in the first posting and see how it goes.
Adam

Hello Adam
Thanks again for your info, I did find the Wolsingham and Tow Law Catholic page but cannot seem to get into it there seems to be only 1 message there from you that is if I am on the correct page. It will not let me post a message but in all probability I am doing something wrong I am not too familiar with computers. I would love all info and children/baptisms of this family do you have any suggestions for me to try as I have very little of this family and am excited I have finally found them.
Sorry to bother you again as you have already been most helpful and shared your time with me already
Thankyou
Yvonne from OZ
-
Hello Ivonne. You are not the only one that finds it confusing,
I have had a couple of mails from people wanting information who do not know how to use that part.
Go back to that page where I have posted that look up offer and click on the part where it say "new topic" and the post your request.
Good luck.

My grandfather is burried in the cemetary at Tow Law, unfortunately he doesn't have a marker. However his parents would also be burried there, they are Thomas Moses died circa 1901 and his his wfe Sylvia who I don't have a date of death. Does anyone know of the approximate area in the graveyard they are burried and if there is a memorial on the stone.
Also burried at the cemetary is my maternal grandparents, George and Margaret Davison. They are near the entrance and last year were joined by the ashes of their daughter Jean Davison. Just in case anyone wishes to know.
-
Hello this is my very first time on here. I am looking for any Etheridges that you may have at Tow Law. I know of a William who died in 1903 aged 31 but any others?
many thanks from crathorne
-
I don't think Adam will mind me saying that if you want anything from his MI's for Tow Law you post it on his Tow Law thread and he will answer you on there.
That is so he does not get records mixed up and also other people looking for those names will be able to find it from that thread.
Jolly Roger
Moderator Comment: I have merged the topics so Adamand should see it on his thread now. Welcome to rootschat Crathorne

Hello Craythorne. Here s two inscriptions although they are of a later date than the one you mentioned:-
In loving memory of William Charles Henry Etherigdge, who died March/25/1931 aged 3 years.
In loving memory of Edith, beloved wife of John William Etheridge, who died January/22/1934 aged 37 years.
There are Catholic convert baptisms for Etheridge. If you want them post the request on the Durham REQUEST board using the heading "Wolsingham and Tow Law Catholic baptisms" that I have put on the LOOK UP OFFERS board
Adam
-
Thank you adamand for your quick response to my query and to the moderator who so kindly helped me along to your site. I am going to Durham Records Office very shortly so will look up those Catholic baptisms you mentioned. Much appreciate your assistance to point me in that direction as the vast majority of my ancestors that lived at Hedley Hope were staunch Methodists. The John Wm Etheridge is the son of the Wm & Mary I was so interested in

Hi Adam,
Thanks for doing this and if there's not too many, could you post the Fleming entries for Tow Law please?

Hello Ru. When I first read the posting I thought there would be a number of Fleming gravestones but there is only one.
It is from St Philips graveyard (with only 21 gravestones)
It has been laid flat but is unbroken.
There are no Fleming stones in the municipal cemetery.
In memory of Fred, dearly beloved son of George and Maria Fleming, died August/12/1880 aged 8 months.
May I ask what religion were the Fleming family?
Adam
-
Many thanks Adam. I'm not sure about religion at this stage but will let you know when I get something other than CofE. The father, George was a boot maker from Wolsingham s/o Joseph & Elizabeth nee PEART.

Hi Adam
Could you tell me what information you have about the McCabe family from Tow Law.
Thank you
Margaret
-
Hello Margaret. Only one 1976 inscription for McCabe.
What information are you looking for other than gravestone inscriptions?
I take it the McCabe family are Catholic.
Adam
-
Hi Adam
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, the McCabes were a Catholic family. I suppose I'm looking for anything that might lead me to discover where in Ireland the family came from originally so I can persue that line. I have names but that's about it.
Margaret
-
Hello Margaret. I do have the deaths, baptisms and Marriages for Tow Law.
The only entries that would give the place/address for the groom and brides parents would be the marriages. Unfortunately there are no Irish Counties or towns listed in the abode for parents. (see look up offers for Tow Law)
Adam

Hello Andy. There are three for Littlejohns but they are all way past my 1950 cut off date for posting.
Adam
-
Hello Andy. Only one for Pye but it is 1950's
Neither are for Arthur or James.
Adam

Dear Adam,
I noticed on your list you had the surname Emerson. I'm looking for a John Emerson who probably died in Tow Law bet. 1881 & 91 and any family. He was a Methodist preacher and clerk to the Local Board but had previously been a bootmaker in Tow Law from the early 1850s. His wife was called Jane. Both came from Weardale. (Not sure where the Methodists were buried). Any help gratefully received.
Thanks, BR
-
Hello BR. There is only one gravestone for John Emerson at Tow Law and that is St Philips, Tow Law and not the municipal cemetery:-
In loving memory of John James Emerson, who died May/21/1881 aged 26 years.
There is a John Emmerson and Frances Jane at Crook, the Sun Inn, but I do not think that goes well with Methodism.
Adam
-
Many thanks for the speedy reply! The names you mention do not match up though with my records.
I think I will have to go direct to the Durham Records office as a lot of the methodist records are not on line yet. Many thanks for your help - much appreciated! BR

Hi Adam

I am trying to find a grave for Alexander Stewart ( born 1819 ) and died 3 Aug 1896. I am trying to find an exact birth date.

Hello Garry. While replying to the Tow Law burial of Lee I noticed your posting.
It looks like one that I have missed!!
I can tell you that there are no MI's for your Alexander Stewart anywhere in by collection of M Inscriptions of the Dale.
Adam
-
Thank you very much Adam (and Jen B for practical help) for info re Lee burials at Tow Law. One of the names you came up with was the brother of my grandmother. However I am surprised that my gt-grandfather and his three wives are not buried at Tow Law as they lived there all their lives. Could you tell me if Methodists were not buried in the main cemetery and if so where were they buried? The death dates I am interested in run from c.1880 - Mary Lee - to c.1911 - James Lee - with two other wives of James probably in between. If no headstone was erected do they still appear in your list? Thank you - and this is a very interesting website - Rogerina.
-
Hello Rogerina. All the burials for Tow Law would have been in the Municiapl cemetery or St Philips church yard.
Most of the older gravestones have been pushed over and removed to be stacked near the perimeter wall.
The ones that were broken in the act of removing them would be either removed and scrapped or if the are so heavy that they could not be moved will forever lay where they fell, usually laid face down.
The only names that are in my list are the ones that I have an inscription for.
Of course they may not have been able to afford a gravestone or it may have been a simple wooden cross and that will not have lasted.

Please may I know details of the MIs for Irvine, Marley and Lawson in Tow Law cemetery? Rogerina

Adam
-
Hi Adam,
Could you tell me what you have for Emerson please?
Thak you,
Jools
Ps where is Tow Law? ???
-
Hello Jools. Just Google "Tow Law" and you will get lots of information.
I can tell you that it is on the A68 and in County Durham and was a mining town but the web sites will explain it better.
I will look up the Emmerson/Emerson for you later.
Adam
-
Thanks Adam much appreciated. :)
Jools.
-
Hello Jools. I am surprised that there is only one gravestone for Emerson at Tow Law and it is in St Philips churchyard, Tow Law.
"In loving memory of John James Emerson, who died May/21/1881 aged 26 years."
As a matter of interest I had a look at the 1861 census and there are 248 Emmerson/Emerson listed in the Dale. I then had a look at all the Emerson/Emmerson Christian names because it usually gives a possible link to other families that they intermarried with and there were 26 families with children that had Emerson/Emmerson as a christian name.
I think you may have a problem with the Emerson/Emmersons.
I am sure there may be a Emmerson website dealing with that name where you will find lots of information
Adam
-
Hi Adam,
Thanks for that, it was a long shot but I'll check it out just the same.
Cheers Jool. :)
-

Would you be able to tell me the inscriptions for any Norwoods please? I have Robert Norwood in my family tree date of birth 1834, I think I have a baptism record for the same year, but cannot find a record of his death, he disappears off the Census after the 1861 one.
Many thanks
-
Hello Elalnb. Here is what I have:-

and daughter of John and Mary Norwood of Tow Law, who departed this life January/31/1913 aged 29 years.

Elaine
-
Hi Adam, I would be greatfull for copy of inscriptions as above.
Names: Carthwaite (Todd), Todd, Rowell.
Many thanks
Neil
-
Hello Neil. I have already posted the details for both of them.
Todd post number 73 and Rowell post number 80.
It is a good idea to read all the posts for the Tow Law thread before posting because there is a chance that you may find a link to some other name. Of course that would be a bonus.
Adam
-
Hi Adam, Thanks for the info it is one more piece in the giant puzzle. I should have read on! I have sent a PM to the Rowell connection as it happens here in Australia. The Tow Law Township seems to fit the early migration of the family around Durham County. Quite coincidentally we live in the only Durham county in Australia. Is there a way to find out if there are inscriptions for Frosterly?
Regards
Neil :-[
-
Hello Neil. If you go to the top bar and do a search for "Frosterley and Adamand as the user
you will get the M inscriptions for Frosterley.
The first posting will have a list of surnames that are on the gravestones in Frosterley graveyard.
I have posted the lists for about 23 graveyards/cemeteries and most of them are in Weardale.

Hi Adam
I see you have Nattrass mentioned on your list and no-one seems to have asked about them. I'm looking in particular for an Elizabeth Nattrass nee Topham who was born 1854 and still alive in 1933. Her husband Thomas died 1927. Their eldest son Thos James was killed in WWI - found him on the war memorial. Other sons John, Frederick, Robert, William & Joseph. Have you anything for them please??
Many thanks
-
Hello Gingerby. Here they are:-
In loving memory of John, the beloved husband of Sarah Nattrass of High Spen, who died at East Hedley Hope, November/21/1912 aged 69? years.
In loving memory of Thomas Nattrass, beloved husband of Elizabeth Nattrass of Blackfield, Tow law, who died December/19/1927 aged 77 years.

Adam
-
Hi Adam
Many thanks for info on the Nattrasses just what I was missing. Especially for Elizabeth. Fantastic. And always wondered what happened to Frederick. Not too sure about the first John though norf the other Thomas. Perhaps there'll be a connection when I get investigating.
Cheers!!
-
Hello Gingerby. Glad they were of some help. I can tell you that there are Nattrass gravestones at Hunwick, Crook, Satley, Escomb, Willington, Frosterley, and Stanhope.
Adam

Do you have any information on inscriptions for Hopwood?
Thanks
Geoff
-
Hello Geoff. Just the one gravestone for Hopwood.
In affectionate remembrance of William Hopwood, who departed this life November/23/1868 aged 53 years.
Also Elizabeth Hopwood, wife of the above, who died September/28/1874 aged 58 years.
Adam
-
Thank you Adam.
I'll have to investigate those names further.
I was looking for John Hopwood who moved to Towlaw in 1875 at the age of 54 with his wife. I think he died around 1898. So he was in the same generation to the inscriptions of those you have mentioned.
I very much appreciate your helpful and prompt reply.
Geoff
-
Hello Geoff. I don't know if you have the information for the 1861 census for Tow law.
There is a Hopwood who was a grocer and beer House keeper.
I do know that the Wife's name was Elizabeth but on the information that I have the Husbands christian name is missing.
The information was on RG 3727 folio 99 schedule 135 Elizabeth was from Northshields and William? was from York.
I am sure that someone will confirm the christian name (I think it is William)
Adam
-
Adam
That's interesting. It saves me some time because I would say it means John and William Hopwood are unrelated.
I have John and his wife Margaret in the 1891 census at Wolsingham so he may have moved from Towlaw upon his retirement in 1888. The geography is a little unclear to me as I am in Australia.
John was born in 1821 in Mold, Wales and moved to Consett as a coal miner in 1848. Various certificates list his descendants as Primitive Methodists. He moved to Towlaw in 1875 after working in various other collieries in Durham.
I have a copy of a news article sent to me by a distant relative referring to their Golden Wedding at Towlaw (which would have been in December 1891). It relates the main dates in his life and describes him as being an originator of the Durham Miners' Union and having chaired a mass meeting 'on Willington Battery with Tommy Ramsay as speaker.' I have a possible death reference to a John Hopwood in 1898 in Weardale.
I thank you for the further information you have detailed.
Kind Regards
Geoff
-
Hi Adam
Do you have any inscriptions of Richardsons at Tow Law?
Thanks
Susan
-
Hello Susan. Yes there are Richardson's at Tow Law. If you look at post number 118 you can read the inscriptions.
I think it would be a good idea to read through all the inscriptions and you may possibly find links that you did not know about.
I have also posted Richardson inscriptions for Crook, Lanchester and Wolsingham.
Adam
-
Adam,
I see that you have a Makepeace listed in the names for Tow Law. I have several that lived and probably died in the area. Could you tell me what the MI says about Makepeace's?

Hello Janis. Only the one for Makepeace at Tow Law:--
In loving memory of Matthew Makepeace, who died December/28/1907 aged 18 years.
Adam

Thanks Adam. A common name in the family--now to figure out where or if he belongs with mine.

Hi Adam
I've just joined Rootschat as I saw your entry for Alfred & Margaret Anderson. They were my Grand Parents. Margaret died when my father was very young, but I did know my Grandfather, Alfred. He died on 18/2/1970. Could you tell me where the cemetery is, please. I also think he was perhaps a Councillor on Tow Law Council. Do you know how I may go about checking this or is an e-mail to the Council the best way?
Thanks
Malcolm
-
Hello Malcolm. I am glad you found that inscription I posted. The cemetery is on the left as you drive through Tow Law. It is a very large windswept cemetery with most of the gravestones removed for "safety"
Tow Law does have a history web site and I think you may be able to find out more from them regarding any councilor activities from the past.
I have posted the gravestone surnames for Crook, Thornley, Stanley Crook, and other in Wear valley.( just in case your family were in the wider area.
Adam.
