Can anyone tell me how I can obtain the original birth cert for a family member in there late 70's. Would I have to go through the same process as, say someone in their teens and have to involve social services etc?

Hello, I believe you would have to write to Southport GRO with a letter from the person whose birth certifcate you need. Do they know their real parents?
(so to speak)

If you know the birth name (and date), it's just the same as ordering a regular birth cert.
If you order using the birth name you will get the cert in that name, if you order using the adopted name you will get the cert with that name on it.

Yes it is the same as normal providing you know the birth name for the birth cert and the adopted name for that cert. But there is no link between the two.
Also the birth cert will have the word 'adopted' in last column.
