Hi,
CHRISTOPHER CAVE LORDAN born 1887 Romsey, Hampshire was in Canada June 1918 & missed his father's funeral. We know nothing of him, when he went, why he went or if he came back!
Any record of him would be much appreciated.
Many thanks, Kay

Hi Kay,
There is a Christopher Lordan at the British Columbia death index. It reads: Christopher Lordan age 75, death date Apr 4 1963, Coquitlam BC, registration no. is 1963-09-004708, BCA #13261, GSU #2033503.
I can't tell you if this is your Christopher, but you should be able to get an obituary for him. Sorry I couldn't of been more help, maybe someone else will be.

Thank you Lisa, that is a great start. The combination of unusual surname, correct age & other distant family having died in BC in the 70's make it a good bet.
It is good of you to take the time to reply,
Many thanks,
Kay

Find My Past has a record of a Christopher Lordan born 1887 (age approx.) arriving 1948 in Liverpool, england from Montreal, Canada.

Thank you aghadowey, it's always interesting to find that people DID actually pop back to see relatives. I'm sure you would have mentioned if there was another Lordan with him, so it seems likely he hadn't married.
Many thanks for your time,
Kay

I only searched for Christopher Lordan. See www.findmypast.com to look in index (free).

Hi Kay,
I looked at Ontario marriages & BC marriages & did not see a marriage for Christopher. If he married it could of been in a province that doesn't have genealogical vital stats on line. Your best bet is to get his obit & I do know a lady who will go get it for you & "snail mail" it to you.
Interestingly, I found a Christ Lordan on the 1911 census. He states his age as 23 & born Sept 1887 in England, immigration year 1907, he is a domestic to the James Yarrison family of Dundas district of Ontario.

Hi Lisa,
Thank you again. The obituary would be brilliant. My Christopher's birth was registered Mch qtr 1887, I will look to see if he is in the UK 1911 census index, just incase there are two 23 year old Christopher Lordans!
Many thanks for your continued help,
Kay
Hi Nell,
Thank you too, that is brilliant, obviously he didn't stay long. Must now try to find out who he was with in Enfield, it's a new area to me.
Your help is much appreciated,
Thank you both,
Kay

I wondered whether or not this entry also fitted into your research?
There is also a Detroit Border Crossing entry for a William L Lordan of Romsey England (wife Marion, Welwyn Herts England)
Looks as if he is going to visit a G B Lewis, Watertown, Wisc for a three week visit.
It is a difficult entry to read but some words stand out
Director
Height 5 9
Med (build I think)
Br (hair)
Grey (eyes)
No distinguishing marks
August 1938

Nell (if you would like the actual image to pore over ;) PM me an email address and I will send it on to you.

Thank you both again!
Lisa, I will try your suggestion, cheers
Nell, yes, yes, yes! William L is Christopher's brother! We had no idea that he had married but we know he travelled to Liverpool from New York 4 Sep 1938 & gave an address in Welwyn. He died Bexhill on Sea 1970. It's wonderful to have these people who just have a birth and death on the tree & fill in some travels, it makes them so much more interesting. Now to find who his wife was!
Thanks again, you're both stars & I will certainly PM you for that original Nell. Cheers.
By the way it's interesting to see that these two boys travelled so far when their father, gd-father & gt grandfather seem to have never left the Market Place in the Market Town of Romsey, Hampshire!
Many thanks,
Kay

Hello Kay,
I looked up the death registration for Christopher Lordan in Coquitlam and at first, I didn't think he was a match. But I checked the only other Lordan death in BC, Dorothy Lordan, and it confirmed that he was Christopher Cave Lordan. Here are the details from the death registrations:
Christopher - died at Valleyview Hospital at Essondale on 4 Apr 1963; he lived in the city (Coquitlam) for 3yrs 3mos 28 days, in the province 22yrs and in Canada 45yrs prior to death; his usual residence was 742 Oliver Street in Victoria; he was a widow; born in the Royal Borough England on 12 Jan 1887; profession was unknown; wife's name unknown; father was Frederick Lordan; mother Molly surname unknown; the informant is listed as "committal papers"; he died of broncho pneumonia, secondary cause was "chronic brain syndrome due to senile brain disease"; he was cremated.
Dorothy - died at Oak Bay Hospital on 10 July 1942; usual residence was 742 Oliver Street Victoria; born on 26 Nov 1878 in Ontario; her occupation was home duties; husband was Christopher Cave Lordan; father was George Quart; mother was Mary Jamieson; both parents born in Ontario; she lived in the city for 3 1/2 yrs, in the province for 3 1/2yrs and in Canada for life prior to her death; she died of cancer of the stomach and was cremated.
To explain a few things on the death registration - the details are those provided by the informant so they aren't always correct. In this case, the details were taken from the forms completed when he was committed to Essondale. His wife had already died and it doesn't look like there were any children so the information supplied at the time likely came from his family doctor. This may explain why the birth place is a bit off.
Essondale was the unofficial name of Riverview Hospital - the main psychiatric hospital in Greater Vancouver (Coquitlam is considered a suburb of Vancouver although it is a city in its own right). But based on the death registration, it sounds like he suffered from senility rather than a psychiatric illness. I did a quick google check (because thankfully I don't know anything about psychiatric hospitals!) and it looks like Valleyview was originally a home for the aged. He may have been suffering from an alzheimers type illness and with no family to care for him, was institutionalized in a long term care facility. Riverview closed some years ago and there were disputes over what to do with the property - while it sat empty, it was used as the site of many, many movie location shoots. Many of the original hospital buildings have been torn down and the area is under redevelopment. I am sure if you google Essondale or Riverview, you'll find more details and some photos.
Looking at the emigration dates on the registrations, it suggests he emigrated to Canada abt 1918, moved to BC between 1938-41 and was committed to Riverview in 1959/60. I checked findmypast but couldn't find a match for any Lordan in 1918.
There is an incoming passenger list for William Lordan - departed Southampton on 30 Jul 1938 on board the Alaunia, bound for Montreal, occupation Director, age 50, last address in the UK c/o E.H. Taylor Ltd, Beehive Works, Welwyn, country of permanent future residence listed as England. So it looks like he entered Canada, travelled over the border and eventually returned home via New York.
Regards,
Lynwen

Hi Lynwen,
Wow, to think I hadn't expected any replies! Thank you so much for all that wonderful information. I have to say I feel a little guilty that I was sleeping whilst you were so busy typing, if I'd have known I wouldn't have slept a wink!
I wonder now, if the obituary will tell me any more if there were no relatives to put it, or does the existance of an obituary mean there was someone close to him surviving?
Very sad that he appears to have died alone when he had a brother in England who obviously had the means to look after him - I wonder had they lost touch - especially as even in the early stages of alzheimers, Christopher may have forgotten to reply to mail etc.
It would appear that he was already in Canada in the 1911 census with an immigration date of 1907, but possibly the doctor assumed he went over at the end of the war.
Shame it doesn't state what he did for a living, but a birth date & details of a wife more than make up for that!
Once again many, many thanks for your hard work, it is much appreciated, & if you need anything looking up in Powys, drop me a line!
Kay
Thanks JJ also for the extra detail on Dorothea, very interesting.

Even though this is almost 7 years old , it has proved a great resource/find !
