My great grandfather owned the Tow Law Yeast Co and I would be really pleased if anyone can give me any information on this company as unfortunately we do not have any records.

Hi Marniemo
Welcome to Rootschat :)
What was your grandfather's name?
There is a Tow Law Deerness and District History Society which may be able to help
http://www.historysociety.org.uk/
and a Tow Law community site with a family history board
http://www.towlaw.org.uk/home.htm

Thanks for the prompt reply Barbara I realised I forgot to put down the great grandfather's name sheesh where is my head this morning. His name was Thomas Moses and now that Ive spoken to my dad on the phone he's seen standing in front of his van with his brother William. He lived in Bridge Street at the time.
-
Now it seems its called The United Yeast Company must be circa 1800's.
-
I should have asked for his date of birth too!
Is this the family in 1901 census?

Thank you Adam, it would seem that the first person and the last person on your list is related to me thanks for your help.
-
Thank you Emily and Joseph, the answer is yes! this is my family, it could be that this Thomas is the son of the Thomas that works/owns the United Yeast Co.
This Thomas is my great grandfather, so it would make the previous Thomas is my great great grandfather - sorry about the confusion, The Thomas in question was born circa 1820 and in 1901 was 80 he died shortly after that.
Not shown on the 1901 census is my grandfather and his brother (because they were born after that) Harold and Wilf respectively.
My gt gt grandfather is shown as living with a Margaret Moses who he has down as a servant !! ?? Were trying to find out if she is a member of the family or not as there are two branches of Moses in Tow Law!
Thank you so much for the info.
-
Do you have all the census information then or would you like any lookups for the family to help sort out the relationships?
Quite often members of the family were listed as servants, housekeepers, etc
Barbara :)
-
I do have quite a lot of census info on the individuals Barbara but funny you should say that about servants etc., my gt gt (whatever) grandfather who was 80 in 1901 and the one who had the yeast company has a "servant" named margaret, we were wondering if this was his granddaughter or someone entirely different. Shes v young, but the info I have from my dad is that this is not probable and that she's not a member of the family. Sheesh my grandfather cant have been that randy could he, I have heard of "partners/wives even" being put down as servants. :o
Its very confusing because there are Moses's in Tow Law that aren't related and my dad has half of the info, I really must get it off him as he has no time at the moment (busy on his fourt or is it fifth) book.
So as you can see any informatiion that anyone can give me is greatfully received.

I think Margaret Jane was Thomas Moses' granddaughter
birth registration Dec 1877 Weardale 10a 293 Margaret Jane MOSES
Thomas' son John Gill MOSES married Catherine HINDMOOR Jun Qu 1869 Weardale 10a 361

John G head m 42 Coal Miner Cockfield
Catherine wife m 41
Mary H dau s 19
John G son 15 Driver in coal mine
Margaret J dau 13
Thomas son 3

the family are here in 1881 RG11/4940 Folio 93 Page 38
in 1901 she is not with her parents:

So Margaret Jane was probably just staying with her grandfather and being exactly what it says in 1901 - working for him as housemaid domestic! No mystery!
Barbara :)

Thanks Barbara
Well that puts that mystery to bed, shame Id like for there to be something juicey happen in the family - there's still time I suppose.
