Greetings,
If anyone is strolling through Rosehill cemetery, I wonder if they could locate a headstone for: David Robb who died June 25th 1859 aged 71. As his son was in business, he could be lucky enough to have a headstone.
It is my hope that David's wife, Elizabeth, is buried with him.
Thanking you in advance.

HI Lynda,
I have just received another message saying my request will be passed on, again. So, I won't have any information for you. :'(
In both emails I stated I was in Australia and that you were doing this kind favour for me. Sad really.
Never mind I know that David won't go walkabout and with any luck he's in the lair next to your ancestors. ;)

Hi Jam Jar,
I am leaving Edinburgh at 8.30 in the morning, so this will leave me plenty of time to go and have a look for you. Wish I had thought and I would have emailed them myself. I usually get a reply in 2housrs from them. Will send picky if I get on and locate the grave.
Take care,
Lynda

Thank you kindly, Lynda.
Don't go to any trouble, though, as there's always another day.

Hi Jamjar,
Just to say that I had a quick look today but to no avail. I am going back in a few weeks so by that time you should have the details of the location. I discovered my gt grannys grave today, and guess what........it was the same place as I located my 3 x gt grandmothers grave.....exactly the same one.....ah well at leasat I know now. Her name is not on the headstone though, and my gt gt grandfathers brother is also in there.
Just let me know and I will get you a picky the next time I am there.
Take care,
Lynda

Thank you very much, Lynda. I'll surely let you know if ever they reply to my email.
It's a shame your Gt Gran's name wasn't on the headstone. Maybe you could get it added.

I was thinking that Jamjar, but the stone seems to be quite porous and kinda delicate. Must be the sea air I think. There were a lot of them very worn/eroded and the facing had fallen off some and is lying at the side.

Lynda

I saw a lot of that problem in Dumfries, also. May just be the constant rain that causes it. ;)

Well, Lynda,
No luck here. :'(
Following is the reply: Unfortunately Burial Records for Rosehill Cemetery begin in 1894 so unfortunately the interment that you are looking for predates records.

Hi Jamjar,
your anccester died after mine. She died in 1856. My Gt GRanny is buried in there. Can you think of any other ancester who died after that date (the recording point) as they may be in there. All round the edge of the cemetry are what I call the monied headstones. These all relatate to the people who were well to do and had money, business. I am just wondering if they buried people in lines as they died as that would make the search easier. (Rosehill is very regimented and dare i say crowded....all the headstones are close together, if you know whaat I mean.....
I will be bac up soon and all the details are in my car, so if it has a headstone, I will find it.
You take care,
Lynda

Hi Lynda,
No I don't have any clues as to the burial place of others.
They'll turn up one day, I'm sure.
I do thank you for your interest.
Jamjar.

May just be the constant rain that causes it. ;)
The rain isn't constant in Angus. Eastern Scotland is in fact a relatively dry part of the country. Average annual rainfall at RAF Leuchars is 28 inches. This compares with 23 inches at Greenwich, 34 inches in sunny Blackpool, 42 inches at St Mawgan in Cornwall, 32 inches in Rome (Italy) and 51 inches in Orlando (Florida, USA).
It's the type of stone. Sandstone is relatively soft compared to granite, and therefore it was easier for the stonemason to carve in, and probably cheaper too.
Both Dumfries and Angus are in the Devonian sandstone, which is sand laid down about 400 million years ago and partly held together as stone by calcite. Calcite is the commonest form of limestone, and it dissolves in water, especially if the water is acid.
QED
The moral of the tale is, if you want your descendants to be able to find your headstone, get it done in granite. It won't last for ever, because even granite will eventually erode, but it will last a lot longer.

Hi this is my first chat on roots so hope you receive. Was searching Rosehill cemetery and noticed you were looking for a Robb headstone. I have a copy Angus monumental inscriptions which includes Montrose Rosehill. Checked it for David Robb but only Robb entries are for two wives. If I can check any other names or cemeteries in Angus let me know. I'm also in Australia.

Welcome to RootsChat.
Could you tell me the names of the two wives, please?

New, here looking for a map for Rosehill Cemetry Montrose - specifically Amelia Gordon (1844-1912)
I was pointed to ANgus Rachives but they have nothing
-
Angus Council has signed up with DeceasedOnline, so any enquiries to Angus Council about historical burials are referred to that web site. Have they referred you there, and if so have you still been unable to find Amelia Gordon?
-
Got referred to Angus Archives by council but Archives have nothing and they checked DeceasedOnline.
-
Ah. In that case I have no idea where to go next.
-
???
Deceased Online has an Amelia Gordon , date of death 6th Feb. 1912 , Angus.
Is that the lady in question ?

Hi, I live in Canada but both sides of my family are from Scotland: Johnstone near Paisley, and the Montrose area on the other side. I know of 3rd gr grandparents buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Montrose (3rd gr grandfather David Beattie died Jan 26, 1868 and was buried on Jan 29, 1868), but I have yet to find out who to contact re: a map for the burial sites for Rosehill. I got the burial register for David Beattie from Deceasedonline but, as others have stated, I wish there was a map to help locate the gravestones. I think someone mentioned there was a fire which destroyed many records there. There are, unfortunately, many burial records not found thru Deceasedonline.
Would be nice to have more Findagrave volunteers locate and/or photograph gravestones altho it's not always easy due to old stones covered in lichens or they're otherwise unreadable.
