Seeking information regarding the WORDSWORTH family from Wortley.
Mence WORDSWORTH born 1867 Hoyland Common (District Barnsley) YKS married 1888 in Wortley to Ada FIRTH from Sheffield and had two (known) sons: Edgar and Frank.
Frank WORDSWORTH born 1890 Wortley immigrated to Canada, and married 1921 in Wentworth County, Ontario CAN to Edna Alice HAMPSON, daughter of John Edward HAMPSON formerly of Doncaster YKS.
Descendants wanted, or any further details of the WORDSWORTH family.
Is Mence a local name or can anyone suggest a derivation?
Jill Statton, Adelaide, South Australia.

Is Mence a local name or can anyone suggest a derivation?
This is probably not a lot of help, but I cannot find any information regarding the use of Mence as a Christian name. The nearest I can come up with is that Merce as a christian name is a variant of the name Mercer, which is most often used as a surname. :-\

I can't find anything either :-\ Several surnames Mence, no first :-\
I only saw one other on the censuses, too - also in Yorkshire, lad born in 1890's.
Maybe the family went in for odd names - although that does seem to be the only one ::)
-
Mum44 - Thank you, but I do have access to the UK Census. Septimus WORDSWORTH and Sarah FLETCHER are probably the parents of Mence.
Mum44 and Maggie - I have searched for the name Mence and cannot find where it may have derived from - perhaps from someone's Surname? Was hoping it might have been a local thing.
I may have believed it should have been Merce, except for it quite clearly being stated as Mence in Canadian records, several times. Shall see what the Old Word brigade (in pipeline) has to say and let you know.
Thank you both for your help. Jill

Hi Jill,
If you are still interested in info regarding The Wordsworth's of Oughtibridge?
My Grandfather was Frank Wordsworth's younger brother, William Wordsworth born 1901.
He followed Frank out to Canada, but returned after a number of years and started a family in Sheffield.
Would be interested in any info you have regarding Frank and the Canadian branch of the family.
My mother is Jennifer Mary Wordsworth, William's daughter.
Many Thanks, Stuart McGregor

Yes, Stuart, I am still interested in the WORDSWORTH family in Canada - just back online after a long break.
However, I cannot add much more, yet.
Don't suppose you know where the name Mence came from? Have you found it as a surname within the family - one of the wives?
Jill
