Hi,
Can anyone help with this pic of my Grt Uncle Jack?
He served aboard HMS Ramillies during WW2 (and survived the war)
Although I know it's the navy, did they have different regiments like the army??
thanks

No probs !!!
And Carole, don't stereotype yourself! You'll be saying that you can't parallel park a car because you have no spacial awareness next! ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Actually I can't!!!
I have my first driving lesson on Tuesday :)
But I can build flat pack furniture and fit a plug ;D

I'm another clueless 'girl' :o I take it it is just the insignia that is red, the rest of the badge navy (or all red) ::) ::) :o

The clue is that he was wearing a white shirt ie in his No 1 (best) uniform. If he was a Petty Officer his badge would be in gold wire. As this is in Red thread he is what is described as "a (junior) rating not dressed as a seaman" - a seaman wore a cap without a peak, a sailor's collar and bell bottoms. This applied to Artificers who were not yet Petty Officers ie Apprentices and Leading Artificers; and also to Sick Berth Attendants.

Thanks for that Les :)
I have papers here to send off and get more info on his time with the navy if they have it so I may get some dates for when he joined.
He was born in 1914 so it's possible that he went in at the start of the war, that would make him about 25 in the pic??
Great to find out about his uniform and what it meant.

And there was me thinking it was a WW2 "economy " pattern... ::) !!
Heigh ho....Nearly there, but Matelots aren't my forte really!! ;D ;D

Hi Carole,
If you look at:
http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/F094AB02-070D-4D93-A15C-EDA1694A1591/0/Medals_Booklet.pdf
You'll see that you've got
1. War Medal 1939 - 1945
2. The Italy Star
3. The Atlantic Star [Ribbon should be Blue, White, Green]
4. The 1939 - 1945 Star
The Stars were 'campaign medals' and to qualify, he would have spent a minimum number of days in each theatre of the war represented. The Italy and Atlantic mean that he was in those areas and the 1939 - 1945 star [I think] means that he had overseas service.
To see what each one was for, go to:
http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceFor/Veterans/Medals/19391945Star.htm
Best wishes
