Please can someone help me trace Thomas Mitchell?
I have him in the 1891 census RG12/1327/90/42 living in West Ham, aged 35, dock labourer, born Doncaster.
His father was Charles, whose occupation in 1885 was furniture dealer.
I'd very much appreciate it if someone could look at the 61, 71 and 81 census for me.

Many thanks for that - it looks very hopeful! The furniture broker bit is pretty convincing.
It's very helpful, too to have the father in law there as it gives me a maiden name for Ann!

As you say - so many children! They were a large household, with father in law and a lodger there too. Still, I suppose with Charles being a furniture dealer they must have been ok for beds!! Looks as though they had acquired the next door house as well since the previous census.

Glad to be of help and I did wonder whether William, the lodger who was a wood turner was making bit of furniture for Charles.

Yes - could be! I love trying to piece together these puzzles - I'm sure that half the time I'm way out with my guesses, but perhaps sometimes we're on the right track! ;)

Charles mitchell is my great great great grandfather on my paternal side. His daughter Mary Ann mitchell married my Great Great Grandfather William Carruthers.
She was apparently a cook in some large houses in Yorkshire and had lost one eye!!
She kept 8 kids alive in utter poverty when William did a runner so I’m very interested in her and her strength of character.
I would love to know more about the mitchell’s and share any info you may have.
Do you have any photos of them?
