Title: Lost at sea
Post by: chinakay on Saturday 31 January 09 17:11 GMT (UK)
Is there a resource that lists lost seamen for Scotland? I think there's one for England...

Cheers,
China

Hi  China

Deaths at Sea  will come under 'Minor Records' in the County selection  on SP. As far as I recall, some are also in the 'Deaths at Sea' on Find My Past.

Have you a name/date?

Hi Gadget,

John Paterson (may be Patterson) somewhere between 1851 and 1861...he's a seaman in 1851 and his wife is head of the household in 1861, with 5 kids......

He's not comin gup on either set of records  :(

SP's only start in 1855 and FindMyPast in 1854. I think also , if he was lost rather than definitely dead,  then a death cert wouldn't be issued immediately.

Have you got anything like births of children after 1851 to narrow down the timescale?

Elisabeth Paterson is 4 at the 1861, so she'd have been born about 1857...

so 1856 onwards - I'll take a wider look, in case it was one of those with a time lag. What was his DoB?

Who registered the birth?

Where did they live?

Hi sancti, thanks for your interest.

I have no idea who registered the birth. Is it important?

The family lived at 11 Georges Place Joint Stock Buildings, Dundee, in 1851, according to the Ancestry transcript.

China

Hi China & Sancti

John was alive in April 1857. He was the informant.

Will be in touch with the cert. China :)

I have only found the death of a 14 year old before 1861 and a Marine death in 1868 - neither seem to fit as Catherine was definitely a widow on the 1861.

Hi China  :)

I notice that on the 1851, they have two interesting lodgers - Elisabeth Soutar, 27 and Archibald Soutar, 25 but born Lanarkshire. They're not coming up on my searches though  :(

John and Catherine married in Dundee in 1843 (Banns/Marriage 20 Feb 1843). The record says John Patterson, seaman and Catherine, daughter of  Wm* Soutar.

I'll chase this up because the only record of a Catherine Soutar  that I can find b. Fowlis is 14 June 1820, Fowlis Wester. Parents - James Soutar and Margaret Ewan.

Catherine Patterson died 26 August 1877, St Andrew, Dundee.

Her parents were given as James Soutar, shoemaker, journeyman, deceased and Margaret, m.s. Ewing, deceased.

Her son, Alexander, was the informant.

John is listed as seaman (M.S) - I presume 'merchant service'

Still no where near finding John but it's a start  :)

An interesting entry on the 1841:

Seagate, N(orth) S(ide), Dundee - 282 ED 17 Page  2

John Patterson, 25, Ship Carpenter
Jean Patterson, 27,
William Maxwell, 17, ap. draper

all b. Angus

No obvious match for this couple on the 1851.

Not sure if it is him but can't see anyone else who matches. He might have been at sea but no record is showing so far  :-\

China -

I've found what might be a John Patersen death  in the  GRO Marine Deaths Index 1855 - 1860. It's page 371. The writing is appalling so can't quite make out what the surname should be  ::)  Not sure how you can find out more. I assume you'd have to contact the GRO:

By gum, Gadget, you've been busy ;D I have been playing with the certs and the censuses. I did find the ship carpenter Patterson.

It's interesting that there doesn't seem to be any trend toward one spelling of the name or the other. In Canada it's fairly standard Paterson, but the Scottish records seem to be about 50/50.

Many thanks for all your help Gadget!
