The result has come back and puts me into Gillespie Group 1. There are now 30 results all US based except myself.

It was easy to do> I had a 37 marker kit donated to me.The worst part was the waiting. You can see the results on the webpage, I am haplogroup l2b1. The matching markers prove my most remote common ancestor to be Thomas Gillespie b.1719 d.12-12-1797 Rowan Co. NC, and I am a match for a particular branch and not related to other Gillespie branches . In other words this as gentleman migrated to USA before 1745 he may have been a brother to a male relative, maybe a great grand fathers son to General Gillespies or something. This group now knows it came from Ireland or Scotland but it is not a Campbell link so it maybe that the Clan Gillespie still exists although it was thought to have died out mid 17th Century. What it does mean is that searches have to go back to both countries to discover more clues. You need to discover a family group or have the test and see what it links you to on the database and you will get a shock !

thanks rowlie.
i had seen a company offering a basic test were they can apparently tell you what "tribe" you come from; celtic, viking etc. so i might just dip my toe in the water and see what comes up before i look into it too deeply. thanks again.

Look at what FTDNA groups exist and you will get a discount as a member. You can do a basic 12 marker test as a starter. You should get some good basic matches and add to Y search. Then you will have contact with those you know match and maybe do a 36 marker. Don't do more that that because the last boxes will probaly all match. You may find one column shows changes. In my case DYS#534 is being added to test because that column shows up as 18 or 19 compared with other group members and it's the only difference. So the puzzle is am I 18 or 19 or neither. The extra 30 markers is $100+ compared with $7.50 for the one column. Here are 3 lines. The top line is the full column test<br>143222 Robert E. Gillespie John N.
