At the moment i am reserching my Carter family from the Worcestershire area.
I'm trying to find out about a John William Carter b. 1871, Bewdley.
I know his mother was a Darks
He is living with his grandparents John and Harriet Darks from 1881 onwards
I was wondering if somebody could kindly find him in the 1871 census if he was born before it was taken so i might find out who his parents were.
Many thanks.

Hi Lauz,
It seems he was born too late to appear in the 1871 census, unfortunately.
"Grandfather" John Darks is shown as unmarried in 1871.
Likely marriage:
Dec 1878 Kidderminster 6c 363
John Darkes to possibly Harriet Carter
So maybe his mother wasn't a Darks after all
:)

There's a birth reg for a John William Carter in A/M/J 1871 Vol 6c Pg 268.
The reg. district was Kiddeminster, which matches with the later census's.

Thank You looks like i need to find out about Harriet Carter's family.

Back in 1861, already at Lax Lane, Harriet (a Dairy maid, still shown as unmarried) is shown with daughter Hannah (age hard to read but possibly 13), a nurse child James William Smith age 2 born Liverpool and a son William age 11 born Bewdley.
RG9/2082 26 12
So that's 2 candidates for John William's father or mother, meaning you need to get hold of his birth certificate :-\

Hi
Did you take a look at the image, I've just looked at it and I think it says he's 19 in 1881
and John Dark(e)s is a widower and no sign of a Harriet.

I was going to add that John Darks senior on 1871 Census
on A........... is trancribed wrong, he is actually 84 and says unemployed labour... bed ridden
John Darks junior is his grandson aged 45
so in 1871 census you have grandfather & grandson
****************
There is another family above them on Census record :
Darks - Edwin is a boatman :
Edwin 41 Sarah 40 fredrick 17 alfred14 Albert 8
I then went back to 1851 Census
John Darks 67 Sarah(wife) 84 John 26 grandson
but this was interesting :
next to them is a family of Smith
John Smith 45 Mary 45 - John Carter 4 ( grandson)
I went back and checked 1871 and the Smith family are there on page before Darks !! & were in same place in 1861
I could not find Darks in 1861 ......... but no mention of John Carter

Hi Lauz,
I too am a Carter and have just started a family tree on ancestry.co.uk. I too have reached the John William Carter brick wall. I have ordered his birth certificate to clear up the issue of his parentage, but I wondered if you managed to clear this matter up yourself. If so, did you manage to trace the Carters even further back? My Dad (Victor Carter)'s cousin (not sure of her name) said there were a few children born out of wedlock. Scandalous. Those Carters!
