Title: Glenfrith Hospital
Post by: treegirl on Friday 30 January 09 16:57 GMT (UK)
Hi!

My Great Aunt was in Glenfrith hospital in the early part of the last century. She is recorded on the 1891 census as imbecile so I am assuming that Glenfrith was a mental health institution.

Could anyone let me know anything about it and if it is possible gain access to the record there. The reasons why she was there are somewhat hazy and I'd love to know more!

Thank you for any info on it.

Hi, my wife who works in this area says of the old Glenfrith hospital that it was next to the current Glenfield Hospital, which is a 'normal' hospital she also tells me that the building is now called the Mansion House and is now the administrative building for learning disabilities for the whole of Leicestershire, it was an institution but has been closed for 50 odd years.

Wouldn't have a clue about the records im afraid.

Kev.

Thank you for this Kevwood - it sounds like a place for people with learning disabilities then...

Just 'googled ' it and here you go.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=056-de3107&cid=0#0

That should help, and it says some stuff in online catalogue or leicester record office.

Hi Jenny -

My Great Aunt is recorded as being a resident of Sunneyholme - a home for feeble minded girls - in the 1911 census. I was hoping to find out some more information on this and other similar institutions around the turn of the 20th century.

I know that the Leicester Records Office holds some records, but I am not local and the 100 years privacy laws are still in force on some records.

Thank you for your offer of help, though!

Wow!

She was Hannah Wood - known as Annie. Born in 1885 ( I think ) and at home with her family in the 1901 census. By 1911 she was a resident of Sunnyholme and that's all I know.

She was recorded on 1891 and 1901 census as "imbecile" and my nan remembers visiting her in hospital with my G Grandmother ( Annie's sister ). My nan was born in 1916, so she must have still been around in the 1920s.

Thank you for looking for me!
