Hi,
Trying to obtain further information on this line of my tree after the 1911 census provided more precise information reagarding the place of origin of my great, great grandfather.
The 1911 England Census has Patrick Hughes (born 1851 - consistent with 1881 and 1901 census data, these being the only other two he appears on) from (almost certain it reads...) Ballintogher, Co. Queens.
A copy of the text can be seen here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,352946.0.html
On Patrick's 1880 marriage certificate, his father's down as Laughlin Hughes.
I've also just searched the recently uploaded Irish Civil Registration records on Familysearch, and discovered that a Laughlin Hughes died in 1894, aged 73 (born c.1821), with the death being registered in Mountmellick Registration District.
This would seem to be a very good potential match for Patrick's father given that Ballintogher is within Mountmellick PLU and that Patrick's father is not stated as being deceased on the 1880 marriage certificate.
I also know that Laughlin potentially married twice, as I'm told that Patrick's mother died when he was a young child. Laughlin allegedly remarried, Patrick did not get on with his step-mother, so relocated to Liverpool to work on the Docks.....
Might anyone be able to help in locating any further records relating to these Birth or marriage events??
Regards
Paul

Hello John,
Am I right in thinking that 'your' Hughes family are on the 1901 Census, headed by Michael Hughes who was a farmer, and that the sibling named Stephen that you refer to was born in 1874?
If so, this is not 'my' Hughes family although they may well be linked via the previous generation. In any case, I have a copy of Stephen Hughes' birth certificate if you would like a copy...

Hi Pablo
There is a Ballintogher at Ballybrittas in Laois.
There is child called Anne b 1866 to a Loughlin Hughes and an Anne Dunne in Emo, which is near Ballybrittas
loughlin hughes child (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Ahughes~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Alaois~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Alaughlin~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Adunne~)
The free index on ifhf shows a Patrick Hughes born to this same couple in 1851 in Portarlington RC Church & another 7 children

You have to order certs from the GRO to see the full details... a research cert costs €4, once you include these references with your order.
have you the details for the marriage from the BMD Index ?
Shane

I don' t have any details about it ...I just suppose they were married in 1873 in Mountmellick as their first child was born there in 1874 and the mormons indicate a wedding for each of them in that place and year : the details they indicate for both names are the same :volume number : 3 ; page number : 543 ; digital folder : 4179385
I don't know if that 's enough to get it ?

these look like the Index references - these are all you need to order a cert :
Name: Margaret Molloy
Registration district: Mountmellick
Event type: Marriage
Year: 1873
Volume: 3 / Page: 543
a Michael Hughes appears with the same references.
for notes on ordering a research cert see :

Details included on a Marriage Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

it does not work : the years indicated are between 2012 and 1920...
-
you have to order these by post - have another look at the 1st link above ..

ok ,thanks : I 've printed the paper and am going to send it : hope that it will be the right wedding and people !

the same volume, page number, year, district etc on the index means that those two names appear on the same page of the marriage register - along with a few other people - so it's gives you a likely marriage. If the other clues you have point to this record (e.g. parents name, dates and places of birth for their children etc), are accurate then it's probably correct.
good luck!

Hi,
I attach a scanned copy of the wedding cert. Please note that the age shown for Michael Hughes may not be accurate. I think he was probably 33 when he got married. He would not be the first person to subtly change things!
I reckon the wedding date is 20th February 1873 but see what you think.
Michael is my great grandfather.

Michele,
Hi. Thanks for your PM. At the moment my interface does not give me the option to respond directly to your message. I'll check what's going on and then send you a fuller response via PM.
My grandfather (i.e. Michael's son) was Stephen Hughes (married Lucy Luttrell in 1911). They produced 13 children so it has become a very large branch of the family!
-
yes I have all the information about them : I am in contact with your cousin : John F Headen who has sent you a message ;he lives in SPink ,co laois : he would like to know more about you as he has never heard of you
go to 8 geneanet.org : type HUGHES + portarlington and you will have my data
