Hi Karen,
a good place to start is the Beginners board on Rootschat, click on this link for some good ideas, lots of help and tips:

Is Joseph your direct ancestor? If you'd like a copy of Joseph's birth certificate, you can order it through this local register office website http://www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk/search.php or through the General Register Office (GRO) online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ using the reference numbers I gave you ealier for his birth
Birth marriages and deaths 1837 onwards can be looked up on the free site freebmd and there's a link from there for ordering certificates.
Census information can be found on paysites like ancestry or findmypast.
If you'd like to have a look on these sites - it's much more interesting to do it yourself!
Otherwise I can look up other census for you 1841-1901, just ask
Barbara :)

I see you have another thread about John Parr, and so may already have the right 1841 census for him, so I've linked it to this one in case we all look up the same census information. other thread here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,356858.msg2341448.html#msg2341448
You can see the 1881 census free for him here:

Interesting, because now we see that children William, Samuel, Robert and Hannah are stepchildren and surnamed Shields
Marriage: Dec 1878 Middlesbro' 9d 1007
PARR John SHIELDS Mary
this record is also available through Tees Valley indexes http://www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk/search.php
The marriage cert should show John's father's name and occupation, to confirm the 1841 census I've posted on your other thread
