I am just starting to do my maternal family tree and I have already hit a brick wall! ......
My Great Grandad GEORGE FREDERICK WOOTTON (c1882) married a FLORENCE WOOD between 1900 (earliest) and 1908 - their first child was born in 1908.
However because he was in the army (ESSEX REGIMENT - 56th FOOT) I am finding it difficult to try and trace their marriage! I need the certificate to try and confirm his fathers name! Apparently George left home at 14 because of his STEP father whose name was never discussed!
Could anyone please help on this - were military marriages different from civil ones so to speak and where could I obtain the information required from.
Thanks in advance

56th Foot is the old (pre-1881) designation of what became the 2nd battalion of the Essex Regt.
So if we assume he was 2nd Bn:
till 1901 they were in Burma,
1901-02 South Africa
1902-04 Warley, Essex
1904-07 Malta
1907-09 Dublin, Ireland
Military marriages in the England/Wales will be in the usual GRO civil marriage indices. However if they happened to marry when the battalion was stationed abroad then you need to look at the Army Marriage Indices.
If you've already looked at the civil registers then I take it they weren't married in Essex between 1902-04?
I'll check the others for you.

If you can find his attestation sheet, and it is anything like my grandfathers (enlisted 1896), you will find (as I did!) date, place, maiden mane, name of vicar AND the witnesses to the wedding all on the back page! ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Neil & Scrimnet! Some interesting info there!
I think i have found the record of the marriage now.... going to order it tonight.... a very helpful person on Genes Reunited managed to literally no sooner I a made a similar post - managed to give me a whole load of information - including his Military Records - apparently from Ancestory ... I have searched and searched (I'm obviously doing something wrong) yet cannot find them - although from what I gather he is down as George WOTTON. The information I was given though matched together perfectly ....
So ... any ideas on how to obtain Military Records from Ancestory? ... all I can find is WWI Medal Rolls etc but George served in the Essex Regiment well before the Great War.
Any help would be appreciated - I am desperate to see these records.
