1871 census
Looking for James Thompson of Redcar, a fisherman, (son of James).
1841 census age 3, 1851 age 15, 1861 age 23, so his dob could be from 1835 to 1838.
I think I have him in 1881 age 48(?) with wife Eleann 42 (born Staithes). Trying to ascertain if this could be Ellen Verrill birth registered Whitby March quarter 1839
Many thanks

Hello Pam
Found on freebmd marriage of James Thompson - on the same page Lavinia Brown Smith, James Mitchell Steel and Ellen Verrill. March quarter 1874 Guisborough.
Perhaps wife Eleann Thompson could be Lavinia?? However, Eleann stated as born Staithes and there is a birth registered in Whitby for an Ellen Verrill in March 1839.
Look like end of my thumb not working right now!
Where would Staithes births be registered, do you know?
Thanks for the 1871.
Many thanks for your help
Regards

Staithes is a very pretty fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast, much visited by artists and photographers! It's postal address is Saltburn-by-the-sea, it's midway between Saltburn and Whitby. Staithes was part of the parish of Hinderwell.

Thanks Roobarb and Pam.
I am from Redcar originally, I agree with you Staithes is a very pretty village, just wondered which registration district it would have been in for a birth in the 1800s.
Have found the marriage of James Thompson to Ellen Verrill on the Middlesbrough indexes in 1874 registered Guisborough. She was 42 1881 census and doesn't seem to be around in 1891. (Unless she was visiting elsewhere?) James and Ellen would be in their 30s when they married. Of course - just to confusre things, I suppose Ellen could have been married before and Verrill was her married (widowed) name!
Thanks for your help

Didn't realise you were a local Ceeoh!
Did you order the cert? Don't know if you are aware but the Register Office will confirm (or otherwise) details from the cert so that you know if you have the right one, you just fill in the form where it says to contatc them, next to the marriage entry. You could ask whether Ellen was widowed and for confirmation of Ellen's father's name to see if it was Verrill.

Ellen .. doesn't seem to be around in 1891.
Hello
I think that she and James are living at 4 South Terrace, Redcar in 1891. She is listed as Eleanor. The census reference is RG12/3999 Folio 110 Page 27.
In 1901 they are both at the same address and she is shown as Ellen. The census reference is RG13/4570 Folio 19 Page 30.

Hi Roobarb, I don't think I will go the certificate route - we bitty expensive as this is extended family from the person I was originally looking for - and found, thanks to rootschat - James's brother John. Knowing the name of James's wife is enough to put some meat on the bones.
Hello Posteria, thanks for the 1891 and 1901 census data, did you by any chance notice if they had children? They didn't marry until they were in their 30s (I think) and there were no issue mentioned in 1881.
All this information is very much appreciated
Very many thanks

Hello Margaret
I am sorry but I assumed you would be able to see the census details from the references which I provided.
In 1891 they are shown as ....
James Thompson Head M 52 Fisherman Yorkshire Redcar
Eleanor do Wife M 48 Yorkshire Staithes
4 South Terrace, Redcar
Although their ages are a bit wayward in 1891, they are still living at the same address in 1901 and their ages have reverted to normal ....
James Thompson Head M 64 Fisherman Redcar Yorks
Ellen do Wife M 62 Staithes Yorks.
As you can see, there was just the two of them, at that address, on each census.

Many thanks posteria for further info and for extra detail in previous message. The census references are most welcome should I be able at some time to view the image (not possible at present). Our rate of exchange is so fiendishly high. Not sure what it would cost by using vouchers on one of the appropriate sites, but I know to buy a certificate (bmd) costs us about R91 - thats a bit like someone in the U.K. having to pay £91 instead of £7.
Looks like James and Ellen were a Derby and Joan and happy with their own company. They only married in 1874 and there were no issue mentioned in 1881.
Many thanks for your help

Just as a matter of interest I think South Terrace in Redcar is Fisherman Square.

The Ellen Verrill who married James Thompson in Q1 1874 (reg. Guisborough vol. 9d page 763) was almost certainly the daughter of Isaac Verrill (22/2/1805, Staithes) and Ann Sanderson (7/3/1800, Staithes) who married 1821 in Hinderwell. They had 5 other children; Ellen was christened 5/2/1839 in Hinderwell

Many thanks Staithes and Shipwright 23 for the Verrill data. I was looking for James Thompson as extended family to the younger brother John, this all adds to the history of the Thompson family I have been researching for John's descendant (my paternal cousin) in New Zealand.
Much appreciated

Margaret
