MeanGenie,
What a wonderful piece of family research that is! Just like Happy Families, I agree, Gaie. (Every time I'm searching around the house for odd socks to make up a pair, I'm reminded of another card game we used to play in my youth, Pelmanism, where you had to make pairs from face down cards - does anyone else remember it?)
Back on topic, is this orange almost sucked dry now, or is there further mileage to be had...?

Here's one for Scrimnet..... 132 people said they were "superior" to the head of the house and the vast majority of them were women ;D ;D
Actually...proving how useful this thread is to teach us how best to navigate the 1911 Census.... it's quite useful if you are looking for ancestors who were nuns.
13 put relationship to head of house "mother superior" and 26 were"sister superior" (ie not in the occupation box)...not sure what the others were but presumably something professional. (They were not all in institutions)

I get the feeling that some are the result of partial searches, i.e. search for parrot and you'll find parrot importers, and unless you look at the actual pages or transcripts, you won't know for sure.
Still good fun, though ;)

Agatha Christie was born in 1890 and didn't marry until Christmas Eve in 1914. she had one Daughter Roslind born in 1919
Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Barton Road, Torquay on the 15th of September 1890. She was a trained pharmacist which helped her when writing some of her books involving poisons.
So unlikely that the entry in 1911 is correct for her.

Why shouldn't it be correct? She's the right age and is enumerated in her maiden name, which makes perfect sense if she didn't marry until 1914
???
-
I'm sure it's Agatha as unmarried Agatha Mary Clarrisa Miller I found....before she married Archibald Christie and became Agatha Christie in 1914
Perhaps Dancing Master is thinking I found someone actually called Agatha Christie in 1911

Has anyone found any revelations about their own ancestors on the 1911 census.
I found out about my great aunt, who married a man who was at least 15 years her junior (probably more like 20). They both lied about their ages - he made out he was older, and she made out she was younger. The poor lad died when he was 25. She must have been some woman ! :o

William Thacker, 66 of Walsall, Staffs, was Horny 8)

:'( :'( :'(
You can't use the comma in the surname field in the 1911 census anymore.... which is a real shame...It was fun looking for things but also a very useful way of finding other people in the household. Maybe they felt they were giving too much away for free... ::)
The only way now is to use the "begins with option" and do 26 searches starting with a, b,c etc.... Takes a while but you would get there in the end :o
Milly
-
I'm sure they said somewhere that searching without a surname would eventually be enabled.
-

Welll it had to happen. Why would you pay for a transcript when you could get the household for zilch. Pity.
Surely they can't have teams of people looking out for these loopholes ??? I wonder who spilled the beans ??
-
From the blog:
We have released a number of new search features this morning - we hope you find them useful.
“Last Name” is no longer a compulsory field - you can search using “First Name” or “Census reference” instead
Up to 5,000 search results can now be viewed
Searches with up to 1,000 results are now displayed automatically, without the “gateway” screen being shown first
You can choose to enter a Census reference number instead of an address in Place Search (see the help file next to this field for further details)
http://blog.1911census.co.uk/
-
First name search sounds quite helpful - maybe losing the comma trick wasn't deliberate and just a by-product of making last name not compulsory... :)
-
It does still work - put the comma in the 'Census reference' section at the bottom of the advanced search page.
I just tested it ;D
-
oooh... so it does...well done ;D
Milly
-
Credit where it's due - I got the tip here ;D

Has anyone found any revelations about their own ancestors on the 1911 census.
LOL yeah!
Uncle Ernest happily living in Plymouth with his wife Nellie ................ that no one knew existed
LOL my great grandad put down the real name of ONE of his children, all the rest got their abbreviated names!
(and one got a name totaly different to her own!)
Seriously unfair of him to make it harder for me to find them especially as their surname is Smith!!!!!
Gaille
-
This thread is really funny. How on earth do you find out these things???????
-
If you read the entire thread, it is explained how it was done. Unfortunately, because of changes made by FindMyPast, the method no longer works.
-
Nick, please see my reply 100 on the previous page. The 'old' method does still work, you simply put the comma in the 'census reference' panel rather than in the surname panel.
Jennifer

I stand corrected. Thanks, Jennifer :)
