Hi all
Due to popular request we are going to have a Rootschatters meeting in York Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June.
There are no race meetings this weekend so hotels should be at 'normal prices'
More details to follow but if you would like to attend please respond to this message.
For those who have never visited York, it's an amazing city with a beautiful Minster and lots to see and do.

Hi Ann
I have never been to a Rootschatters meeting and wondered what happens etc. I don't live far from York.
Evie
-
Hi Ann,
Linda and I are definitely interested providing we can arrange time off work :) I've heard great things about York but have never been before so looking forward to seeing it.
Evie, I've been to the last 2 meets in Glasgow and had a wonderful time...reply number "200" in the first link shows you the sort of things that we do :) Hope you decide to come...you'll meet such lovely, friendly people and have a terrific day out :)

Ann

perth :) :)
It's the weekend before my birthday too! I did say I would help do stuff as I used to live in York. I will make it for one day at least I think (and probably two)....... I hope...... I hope I don't have to change my mind. I can always have two parties - one at the meet and one the week after.... mmmmm..... interesting......that's a thought......
;D ??? ;D

Just bookmarking for now but fingers crossed ;)

That's settled then, drinks on claire!
-
Ann,
Who's organising it all this time?
You've obviously taken it upon yourself to set the ball rolling.
I also see Claire has signed her name in blood on the contract (birthday or no birthday - yer no gettin oot a this yin Claire! - Matt needs someone to buy him a drink - I'll buy you several for your birthday).
I reckon Val should do most of the running around. After all, she's bound to be well rested after that fantastic holiday she's been rubbing in our faces telling us about.
Dave,
really looking forward to it,
reporting from Glasgow.
PS Clare might come too - eyes and hands off Matt!

In June this year the Saturday/Sunday will be 20th/21st not 21st/22nd. Better check you book the correct dates.
The dates struck me as odd because I had the 27th down as the date for the following Saturday when the York FH Fair is being held at the racecourse.
Graham
-
Nice one Graham!
Thanks.
I've already been pricing based on Ann's stupidity! ;)
Ann, ye ken am tuggin yer knee.
Dave :-*
-
I know it's dangerous, but I've been thinking ::)
Why is this on "The Lighter Side"?
A lot of folk ignore this board.
Perhaps it should be moved to "The Common Room"
I've asked the Mods to move it.
Dave
-
Dave
It's a joint effort between me and Val and Claire.
It was on the Common Room but was moved by the mods. I've asked for it to be stickied so it stays at top of the list.
Graham - re the dates you are quite right lol. Guess who looked at wrong page in their calendar?
Ann
-
I am going....
I just needed to check....
As I am involved in organising I should do really... ;D
Am saving pennies for buying Matt one drink ::)
Hooray!
Claire
-
Glasgow Meet and follow ups were always on Common Room board. ...
http://www.rootschat.com/links/049t/
I see no reason York Meet, or any others for that matter, should be anywhere else.
Folk need to know and, from past responses, enjoy sharing.
Dave
Claire, Matt is happy with a glass of Coke - nice guy. I'm nicer but cost more!
-
Coke?? Is that one of those evil non-alcoholic drinks? Educate me???
Lol Claire one drink is good a long as get to choose :D
Dave is a great guy too we will have plenty of laughs I am sure :)
Thanks to Ann for kicking this thread off...anybody else wanna put your name down on the list?
Matt.
-
.......
Lol Claire one drink is good a long as get to choose :D

I take it back Matt.
You obviously do drink more than Coke.
Your typing says it all! ;D ;D
See you soon pal.

thankyou for arranging this ann
please put me and hubby down to go
Bev
-
Hi all
Ok been doing a bit of research on hotels and the like. The main issue is if folks are going to drive or not. Car parking in centre of York isn't great.
I will shortly be posting a few hotels for folks to peruse near to city centre but some have NO parking so you need to plan this into your travelling plans!
Ann :)
-
Bev,
Nice to 'meet' you.
It'll be a great weekend.
Hope you know some 'cuss words'. That woman, Ann, is a bit common!
She likes to organise things but it is just an excuse for her to have another drink. Her man is just as bad!
Me, I'd rather just have a coffee.
PS
This is between you and me.
I'd never say it to Ann's face or post it on the main boards.
Joking Bev. ;D Ann and everyone else going are great folk. You and hubby will enjoy.
Dave

Rofl Dave
Sooo all that whisky in Glasgow was medicinal then?

Hi all
Having scoured the internet this site seems the best one re info on places to stay:
http://www.iknow-yorkshire.co.uk/north_yorkshire/york_uk/all_prices/hotels/all_specialities/
I'd suggest you use York Minster as the focal point in terms of how far away from the centre you want to be. Also to note read the details re parking for each hotel carefully! Some have none at all, some very limited and first come first served.
I've previously stayed at the Premier Inn which was central and was nice and very good. I've also stayed at the Hitlon which is pricey but very nice and it does have an underground car park.
We normally try and stay in same place if we can but as you'll see places are pricey!
Suggest have a look and then we can have a conflab.
Ann :)
-
Hi again
As well as places to stay need now to start thinking about things to do/places to visit.
Again this is looking pricey and I'm still looking into it but even the Minster which is a must is £5.50 to get in - tho if there are enough of us I shall go for the group discount arguement!
Only freebie so far is the National Railway Museum which is very interesting and good fun. According to their site they have archives there too for railway enployees so need to find out a wee bit more about that.
Will keep you posted!
If anyone has trouble with stairs or has trouble walking for any distance, could they drop me a pm as it would rule a few things out e.g. a walk round the city wall as it entails climbing stairs (not a lot) to get up on it. This one won't be on the agenda if it rains as it is a wee bit exposed up there! Also if being underground is not for you please pm me - the Jorvick musuem is pretty much underground tho it isn't cramped but might not be for everyone.
More to follow soon
Ann :)
-
Hi all
Thought a wee map might help!
http://www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk/gfx/maps/yorkcity.pdf
Most of the big sights are on here.
Ann :)
-
Hi all
As previously mentioned parking is a hassle. If you are coming by car and where you are staying has no car park OR you are driving over on either of the 2 days here's the relevant info re car parks......
http://www.york.gov.uk/transport/Parking/Car_parks/
Ann :)
-
Ann
Thank you for doing all the homework :)
Will have a good look through the hotels etc and get back to you.
Still have not decided whether to take the cross country train or come by car but looks like decision time is close!
Barbara
-
There is Cliffords Tower
York Castle Museum
Rowntree Park (just to smell the chocolate and see where Charlie and Chocolate Factory filmed)
The Treasurers House (interesting story of Roman Ghosts in the cellar)
Ghost Walk (if we can venture out after dark)!
Time to look around places like the shambles etc
River Walk
Find the site of the hotel where my great great great Uncle lived (they knocked it down for a bus station)
There is some sort of Archeaology place too
etc etc etc!!!
Loads of stuff!!!
Claire
-
The microfilm room at the Borthwick Institute should be open. It is open Sat & Sun during term time and Sat during holidays. Not sure whether this weekend is in summer vacation.
There are films of parish records for a large part of Yorkshire there and also pre 1858 wills.

There are also treasure hunts that take you round the city - gives you chance to see the city in places you don't do normally. I also have a book with a walk (about 2-3 miles that takes you round the city).........
Claire
-
Thanks Ann so much for the info up date, good work
Sybil

Thanks Ann
Have already started to look at hotel and guest house sites, hope to pick one out soon.

Hi Ann
York sounds good it is a lovely city with plenty to do. I would like to put my name down to go and possibly my boyfriend too if that is ok.
Louise :D
-
Ann, or anybody.
How fine do you think I need to cut it before deciding / booking place to kip?
Are places likely to be busy?
Dave
Emby wanna share to keep cost down?
Sounds like Louise has dumped me ;)
-
Hey Dave
you will always be my special wee charmer :-*lol
We went last year in june and booked a b&b at the last minute which was lovely there seemed to be plenty of choice too i think it depends on the racing
louise
-
Cheers Louise.
Do I know yer man?, ie RTFs?
-
Hi Dave
You might know his face as he drinks in there quite often and is friendly with some of the locals. I have not been for a while which is unusual although might have a wee drink there at the weekend though its still my favorite pub.
Louise
-
Lousie
Fantastic! Looking forward to seeing you again
Ann
-
Hi ll
Thanks for the list of places. Have them on the radar BUT a lot will depend on things like mobility. For sure we'll not see evrything in the 2 days - just means we'll have to go back lol
I will make sure we have dry and wet weather options whatever we do.
Ann
-
Hi Ann,
Yes I will be there and Dave em jealous are you?
Watch out I am back.
Val
-
Glad to see you home Val.
Bet you wish you had another month or so.
Never mind, 2 days in York has got to be just as enjoyable as your 3 month cruise. Something to look forward to, eh?
I know what I'd pick.
Dave
Added - whit's ra current line up Anne?
-
I have found this hotel I dont know if its of any interest to anyone. Its called the Holgate Hill Hotel 124 Holgate Road YO244BB
It as free public parking possible, and has a Bar (an essential for some folk hey Matt) the local bus stops outside and its only minutes from the city centre on the A59.. I will look into it a bit more and probably go over and give it the once over.
Val

Ok down to srious business now cos it;s not far away. Apologies for what is a list of requests and stuff but it really is essentialyou get back to me by not later than 30th April on the following :
1. Are you coming or not?
2. If you are coming on Friday night do you want us to meet up to eat or do your own thing?
3. Those who are staying over Saturday - do you want to join the group for an evening meal?
4. Do you have any mobility issues I need to take account of? (This really is very important) - please PM me if you do. York is a 'walkable ' city for the most part but some bits like the wall are not suitable if you have mobility issues
The answers to the above determine what we do. If you think anyone might have missed this post, please tell them cos once I book nos for restaurant it's gonna be hard to change (I will be posting some possible places and menus shortly)
Ok what we gonna do when we get there ?
Saturday am - National Railway Museum and archives )FREE)- the usual coffee , chat and a bit of exploring (They have archives of railway workers apparently - new addition)
Lunch - probably at Railway Museum cos is big enough
Saturday pm - Visit to the Minster (THis is where the nos come in. If enough we get in FREE. If not we pay £6 av a head)
Followed by a walk round the bit of the city wall behind the Minster and of course The Shambles.
Pub & Dinner
Sunday - To avoid folks wandering round with luggage I suggest the Yorvick centre which has a group discount plus a storage facility for baggage. BUT do note most of this museum is underground so if this is not for you please let me know because there are plenty of alternatives we can look at.
Remember replies by 30 April - even if just a maybe - but will want definities by mid May .
If you need more info at this stage gimme a buzz
To those from chatroom - not maintaining a separate list for you guys so post here please!
Ann :)
-
I am definatly going to be there,
yes to friday night ::)
yes to Saturday
other you know ,
looking forward to it Ann
-
Hi Ann (and fellow York pilgrims),
I am coming Friday and am meeting Bev at York train station around 3.30pm.
Not sure about Friday night yet but think I am leaning towards doing my own thing, maybe meet three or four people before the actual meet begins. Other than that I will fine with he meal on Saturday nght and do not have any mobility issues. Underground is ok for me too :) My friend cannot join me now as he will be in Amsterdam.
That's me done. I would also like to thank those organising this meet (mainly Ann) for doing all the recon and bookings of tables etc. Thankyou :) It will be a great weekend I am sure.
Matt :)

Hi Ann
I am definitely coming - with husband
We will sort ourselves out on Friday night
We would like to join in the Saturday meal
No mobility problems or concerns about being underground!
Really looking forward to seeing the Minster again.
Thanks for all the hard work.
Barbara
-
I will be there on Friday but not sure what time, so probably best you don't count me in food, but will know better nearer the time..... depends on what my parents are doing as am staying at their flat...! Might be able to do a drink..... (If my parents are there will have dinner with them, but if not then I won't have dinner with them and might more likely be free.... I guess I need to find out if my parents are there! They do know I am coming....!) :D
Will be there on Saturday all day and all night...... (and would like to eat)
The only mobility problems I have are when my car doesn't start...... but since that won't be allowed in the museums anyway I guess I'll have to walk ;)
I will be there on Sunday........
;D
C xx
-
Not sure that you've given us enough information Claire.....
;D
-
No I'm not the most concise person in the world....!
::)
-
Not sure what time I'll be arriving Friday..will be pm so wont meet you for meal....
saturday ,please put me down for all day, meal etc
I have no problems with mobility and no concerns about being underground as long as its not a permanent arrangement.
Thanks for organising it. look forward to seeing you again.
Jed
-

Unsure about underground...don't like confined spaces...but would like to try and if I find that I don't like it, I can easily find something else to do :) Linda's fine with it.
I would also like to thank you for organising the meet...and everyone else involved :)
Elaine

Thanks to everyone for replies.
Will be great to see all those who are coming and sorry some can't be there. BUT I'm sure we'll have a few more meets along the way!
Any late comers, please post no later than end of weekend what you are planning to do cos I am going to start booking stuff next week and restaurants may well squeeze in an extra 1 but erm 10 or so I think not! (so please don;t think Ah well tis only me they can squeeze in another 1 cos all them other 1s add up)
Ann :D
-
OK IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR THEM WHO HAVEN'T REPLIED
You have til close Wednesday 6th May to respond - have pm'd you all. After that I start booking and not able to change some stuff once booked so you'll need to take yer chances re places to eat etc.
I have currently 22 people to find a restaurant for with potential for at least another 15 if you all turn up. Not gonna happen peeps in a Saturday night in a busy city centre eaterie. We can't turn up on the day with that many extras.
I also need nos for places we're going as they have to fit us all in and also to negotiate money off. As Brucie says points make prizes. I can't sneak you all in on a freebie much as would like to.
Soooooo please by Wednesday. Coming or not - see other points above in previous posting re meals etc.
Thanks
Ann :D
-
H Ann,
I know my secretary booked me in but you do know John is coming too dont you?
Val
-
Hi Ann, I will be there during the day on Saturday, but can't stop over unfortunately. Donny to York is easy to do on the train.

Hi Val
your secretary has done a grand job - John is on me list!

Dave
-
lol Dave
I'll make sure your terrible twin gets a seat!
Ann :D
-
Hi all
OK time to choose what kind of food.
Having looked at all sorts we have 2 choices really
A restaurant which will cost a wee bit (kinda about £25 for 2-3 courses plus drinks) OR we go for a pub meal (the usual do order at bar etc but I'd book us somewhere) Have looked at both BUT before I proceed any further , votes please. Will go with majority.
Ann :)
-
Hi Ann
Sounds ok to me I dont mind a bar meal at all but will go with what everyone else wants.
Val
-
I'm Easy Ann!
-
No particular preference here Ann.
Barmeal would be more informal and maybe people would be able to "circulate" more easily.
Barbara
-
I agree with Barbara's comments e bar meal.
I'll go anywhere though.

I am also fine with either option, but am leaning slightly towards a bar meal. I agree with Barbara too. The mre informal the meal is more opportunity there is to mingle and get to know people.
MattR
-
I'm going against the flow and would lean towards a restaurant....! I have never been to a bad restaurant in York but have not been to a great pub....... (admittedly I have only eaten in 1 pub in York!)......There are a lot of nice bars for eating though..... (if pub and bar are the same thing) so if it's one of the nice bars then may change my mind.......
Sorry to waffle again. I love restaurants.
Claire
-
Hi Ann
I go for the Bar meal I have had some good meals in lots of pubs.
Cheers Bry.
-
Hi Ann,
I would go for the bar meal too as I agree with Barbara's comments but I don't really mind... either option's fine :)
Elaine
-
Hi all
Sorry claire pub is favourite. I will focus me energies on that. I agree much more informal and better opportunity to circulate but I do hope you gonna speak to each other during day lol!
I will look for one with good beer (assume a wee bit of Theakstons is OK with them beer drinkers =- who said Bry was Old Peculier - wasn't me guv) and veggie options other than boring stuff - otherwise OH and claire will have to kill me.

Whichever. Just wear old ones. You'll only have one left at the end of the night.
Dave

Ann ;D
All in a good cause Ann, all in a good cause!

And I was just wondering how many of you had actually met!! ;D
Loved York!
Wiggy
-
Quite a few of us Wiggy.
Only in the last 2 years though.
Always good fun.
If you can drag yourself over here again, look us up. You'd be welcome.
Watch this space for photos of the weekend.
Dave
Have you met folk from RC in Oz?
-
Wiggy
Most of us going to this one have met before but is always great to meet new fellow genie addicts
Ann :)
-
No, I'm very new to Rootschat - glad I found it though. Friendly bunch - I get a lot of laughs just reading the chatter.
Wiggy

We're going off topic again but if you need any help, give us a shout.
Dave
-
Well this time in 2 weeks we'll be well into it and I can't wait! The weather should be good but if not hey ho we'll be inside most of the time (unless we do he Conga through the streets of York...I'm sure a few of the locals wouldn't mind tagging along ;) )
Seriously though, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, some for the first time :)
Thanks again Ann for making this possible :)
Matt
-
Sounds like it could be a good do, count me in.

Hi all
THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE MEET
Ok here we go
FIRST AND FOREMOST MY MOBILE NO : 07971 995066
If for any reason anyone can't make it or get lost or whatever, please ring!
THE ITINERARY
Friday 19th - As folks are ariving from all over at different times nothing organised re meals etc but if folks want to meet up just ring. I'm staying at the Premier Inn (Central)as are some other chatters.
Saturday 20th -:
10.30 Meet in cafe at National Railway Museum. Entry is free. Lunch will also be at cafe to fit in with individual requirements. Can commend the Museum even if you're not a choo choo buff. They do have some archives so if you have a rellie who worked on railways worth a go.
2.00 - York Minster. I haven't gone for the volunteeer tour cos it was only a scratch the surface job and saved us 50p per person onl'y so it's a free for all. The entry is £6 per person but if you want to go up the tower (iron lungs not provided) or down to the crypt then tis extra. They assure me you can buy these after the initial entry if you have a fit of energy. The Minster is to use a word I usually hate - awesome! So bring your camera!
4.30ish - a walk round the wall behind the Minster - to note this isn;t suitable for anyone with severe walking difficulties as medieaval stairs are involved
7/7.30 - we eat at the pub in the link attached. http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/brigantes.asp?Tavern=Brigantes&Section=Main
It is a real ale pub!
Sunday 21st June - Having given this a deal of thought I deliberately haven't arranged for us to go anywhere tho I will have about my person details of lots of places folks can go. The main reason being some folks have long journeys home and it puts time pressure around seeing things and getting trains. So I am suggesting we chat about it over Saturday tea and agree what we'd like to do for those who can linger a bit on Sunday. If folks need to be off that's fine - I know some do. OR some may want to do some serious shopping.
Am looking forward to seeing everyone!
If anyone needs a map or to know where the car parks are please let me know - posted earlier on thread but happy to repeat.
Ann :)
REMINDER - MOBILE PHONE NO IS 07971 995066
-
Thanks for that Ann. You have done some fantastic organising! I think you have made the right decision about Sunday....... The tavern looks great and is a very convenient place for where I am staying (that's very selfish I know ;) )
Looking forward to it and meeting the rowdy lot ;D and starting my birthday week in style (see I got that in again.....!!)
Huzzah!
Claire x

Barbara
-
Looking forward to it Ann and thanks for putting it together,
as for the Stairs I will be there you can carry me back down ;)
-
I can climb stairs....... ;D
Do I need to make a badge? I could just wear my school badge - bright pink, has the worst photo of me in the world on it...... or will you all know me from the pic on my avatar of when I was 5?
Claire

Have a great meet everyone.

Did I?
Must have been more naive then.
If I did, then I never had any problems with folk abusing it - must be a reasonably trustworthy crowd, this Rootschat mob.

Ann, amazing job organising this. I don't think folk realise how much background work is needed to organise a weekend like this. I couldn't do it, and I don't have a full time job.
I love you and appreciate your efforts.
See you tomorrow.
Dave
:-*
-
Cant wait to meet you all again tomorrow. I am sorry I can't join the fun and games untill tomorrow morning.

Perth, just a tad early, however, I'm toasting you just now, pretending my clock at your time to justify it.
