I am very grateful to all those who transcribed the BMD indexes and am excited that it has now been made possible to search, albeit as a pilot. However my arm is aching with searching the index.
It took me some time to realise that I could only put in "Antrim, Ireland" in the PLACE box to have any hope of finding family members pre 1922. Searching very common Antrim names has resulted in there being at times over a thousand possibilities!
The PLACE box does not find anyone when I enter Larne or Carrickfergus so I had to stick to "Antrim, Ireland". Nor does it find anyone who died after 1922.
So far I have not figured out what to enter into PLACE after petition for the Larne, Carrickfergus area of Co. Antrim.
What can I do to search more successfully? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Regards

It didn't take long for the complainers to come out of the woodwork. I am very happy that this resource is now available and its only ever going to be as good or as bad as the person who is using it.
-
Hi KiwiRose,
I would also be interested if someone can give you ideas on how to search the site.
When you are not familiar areas of Ireland it can be very confusing.

Hello Mariac
My problem is probably more due to having only basic computer skills and not knowing enough about searching .
I still haven't worked out how to search in just Northern Ireland after 1922!
There are some wonderfully helpful Rootschatters who may be able to steer us in the right direction so we can both better use this wonderful resource.
Regards
KiwiRose.

With respect it would appear as if Rody Lee is not one of them. :)
I too am having problems but then all I have is a name- James Sweeney - with the place of birth registered as Ireland, 1867 +/- a year or two, so where does one start.????????????

hi kiwirose :),
i would like to be able to help you out but i cant even get on the site; flashplayer is required and i haven't got it, nor will this laptop allow me to download it >:(. i was waiting for this as well so to find out i couldn't access it,well, lets just say that this "thing" i'm typing on nearly hit the wall !
it's my problem, i know, and not the sites so when the temper has left me i will get a professional to fix the problem and maybe then see if i can be any help. but no doubt your question will be answered by then; here's hoping anyway :)

the search on place seems to be based on the Registration District - e.g. part of Wicklow, and South Co. Dublin is district of Rathdown, this works for me in the place name search.
The registration districts are equivalent to the Poor Law Unions (PLU) which are included in SeanRuad's townland database at www.thecore.com/seanruad
there's a map of these districts here : http://www.rootschat.com/links/05d7/
and a list here : http://www.genfindit.com/irlplu.htm

First of all, Rody, KiwiRose has tried searching for information without result and is now asking for help so your remark about complainers coming out of the woodwork is most uncalled for in this case.
I had been looking forward to this resource coming online to find a few strays that I've had trouble locating but so far, from the little I've searched have not found much. Therefore, I decided to do some searching for items where I already have certificates and came up with a few surprising results (or lack of results).
Searched for Andrew Lynd and 4 results appeared:
1. death 1901 Coleraine district, Antrim or Derry
2. death 1866 Coleraine district, Antrim or Derry
3. birth 1886 Coleraine district, Antrim or Derry (Thomas Andrew Lynd)
4. birth 1917 Ballymena district, Antrim (Andrew Lynn)
Then put Coleraine as place into search and choices available were (ones crossed out do not apply in this search):
1. Coleraine, Tipperary, Ireland
2. Coleraine, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
3. Coleraine, Offaly, Ireland
4. Coleraine, Londonderry, Ireland
5. Coleraine, Victoria, Australia
6. Coleraine, Itasca, Minnesota, United States
7. Coleraine, Peel, Ontario, Canada
So, I'm left with #2 and #4. Searching for Andrew Lynd with Coleraine, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom gives and added choice of Coleraine, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom but neither choice gives any results for Andrew Lynd. Choosing to search for Andrew Lynd with choice number 4 also yields no results.
So, where are the 3 results for Andrew Lynd from my original search?
You might think that it would just be best to search for a name without a place (easy with uncommon name like this) but in actual fact even the original search doesn't bring up all the results in the actual indexes as I have a birth certificate for Andrew Lynd born 1866 in Coleraine district which isn't even listed in the original search here.
Therefore, it would seem that there is a lot of scope for errors in this pilot.
-
Continuing on from the above, I went back and searching for Andrew Lynd with Londonderry, Ireland as the place and 10 results appeared including 2 deaths for Andrew Lynn aged 2 with no year and a birth for Andrew Lynn birth in 1866 which may be the missing record I mentioned in above post.
In most databases doing the broadest search with just the name should give the most results and then narrowing down the search criteria with a place should give fewer results but this doesn't seem to be the case here.
-
could SKS give a link to this site
i have guilmartins in cork from 1840-1850 whom i would be most interested in

The pilot site we are discussing is here:

thank you very much aghadowey

i found one partner in a marriage, how do i find the other?
all help gratefully recieved
perth :) :)
-
Unforunately, unless you know the name (or at least the surname) of the partner there's no way of matching up the details.
-
I spent a good hour on this site looking for my grandfather's and grandmother's births. It's useful but not detailed enough. However I could not find my grandfather but there were 2 possible entries for my grandmother. So I will spend 12 euros with the GRO and see what comes up!
-
I managed to get a list of people I was looking for, but once I tried to view the document it froze the computer every time I could see part of the page but not anything worth noting.
It seems to jam part way across the two pages.
-
Thank you Shanew147 for your help and the suggested sites to find further information. I will check them out shortly.
Thank you Berni. I will try your suggestion.
Thank you Aghadowey for you positive understanding of my problem. You are a gem. Taking the time to give me detailed help is just what was needed.
If I knew how to do "smiley faces" they would be on this posting!
Kind regards
KiwiRose.

I do get into the Irish BMD's via this link
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable
But I am registered with Family Search maybe this is a necessity.

I may be wrong but I'm sure I read somewhere on the website that no images were availaable yet?
Last night I managed to find the birth of my father inlaw- in 1911 in Ennis.
Today he ain't there ???
This is a pilot site...lets hope once it's up and running for real it becomes a little more user friendly!
Lastly does anyone know if the references quoted on each entry would be the ones you use if you order a cert by post(not yet online is it?)
Just incase I do find anyone I want...far too common surnames I think?
Blake and Coleman ::)
Carol
-
Carol,
for ordering certs - it's the two short numbers you want, and the quarter
Volume numbers are 1-5 when the year is divided into quarters, 1-20 when it's a full year (up to 1877, I think)
the page numbers go from1 to about 1000?
My problems are two!
It is very slow, and freezes frequently on the images - the only answer is to go off and make a cuppa, or whatever (I drank a LOT of cuppas today!) - I'm sure it'll improve later.
Also, if i choose MARRIAGE I get nothing!! So I just let it rip using ALL EVENTS and scroll down picking out the marriages (or residences, as they call them) ... anyone else find this?
regards eadaoin
-
Haven't tried searching for any marriages yet but when I put in just a name and asked for births only it came up with the same births and deaths I got when asking for all records.
-
i was looking for a marriage, i had found the other partner and knew the date and place. if i tried putting the info in it came up no results.i tried putting nothing but the surname and place and date it gave me 188 pages. i then tried all the records with surname and date from 1913 to 1913. it still gave me 188 pages but the one i wanted was the first one.
it seems that just like the other family searches the more you put in the harder it is ::)
perth :) :)
now all i have to do is work out how to order the cert
-
now all i have to do is work out how to order the cert
That's exactly what I'm doing at the mo!
I'm using the http://www.groireland.ie/ website.
Carol
-
seems you can get a copy of the cert for just 6 euro, whats a pps number and how are you supposed to know the date of the marriage?
perth :) :)
-
Under PPS I've just stuck in my page and volume number ??? 4 and 117
and under date I've written June 1/4 of 1923 and specified only if dad is XXX
I've also ticked for a cheaper 6 euro photocopy as this is my hubby's aunt (I hope!)
Good luck Perth,we'll have to compare notes. ;)
Of course I've now got to post the damn thing as I don't have access to a Fax machine.
Carol
-
by the time i have sorted out the form and sent it from here you should have yours back,
hope it works for you
perth :) :)
-
PPS number is the revenue reference number that every Irish resident has for taxation purposes.
When I am in the GRO I get the register photocopy - this gives you a copy from the actual page of the register, and I believe this is the cheaper option.
Shane
-
just marking as I had loads of problems yesterday trying to search.. even for known dates and places.
fingers crossed it will get easier
Jenny
-
Well, I am baffled by it! Tried finding some births, but they don't appear unless 'all events' are specified. To test it,
I've searched for several marriages that I know are registered, for I bought the certs from the records office in Dublin, but a search for them produces no results.
I've tried using the widest search parameter, but then up come 4700 results, mostly from the USA, despite having 'Dublin, Ireland' selected!
I expect it is just teething problems......and that in a few days all will be well.
-
This LDS site is free.It gives an index to BMDs.Someone referred to images-these contain just the name of the child. To access any other details one must order a copy of cert from GRO.
-
If I could find the right index reference I would be a happy bunny :D
oh well, teething trouble I expect.
I'm hoping someone will crack the technique and post it here so that we can all get to grips with it.
I also know many of the early births are not registered, got a nasty feeling most of mine have fallen into this category.

IGI has some, not all, Irish births from civil registrations 1864-c1882 but you need to watch out for the way they've put some of the registration districts- some Ballymoney, Co. Antrim births are listed as Ballymoney, Cork, Ireland.
-
I've had more luck if I first get the 4700 results as Leofric mentioned- then across the top of the page in blue- narrow it down section by section.
Firstly I did narrow by place- in my case Co Clare.
Then narrow by date, you tick a box or two.
Despite the fact that you go into the site under Irish BMD's you initially get thousands of American results Hmmm ::)

Hi Aghadowney
I was not referring to the IGI but to the new free access on familysearch site to index to all Irish BMDs.It gives births up to 1958.There appear to be a few teething problems as it is a pilot project, but in general it's complete.GRO reference numbers are given with each record.
-
Hallo Everyone,
I have just come across this post and have read through all postings as I also had problems going through the search procedure.
Now all I have to do is find my gg-grandmother, who had difficulty in proving that she was born in Carrickmacross, Monoghan when putting in for her state pension in England. Maybe I will have more luck ;D
Thanks to the detailed step-by-step procedure I can at least now search the right area.
Viv
Thanks to all

Yes, but I was pointing out that some of the early Irish births are already in IGI and give names of parents and exact date of birth although place is usually registration district and not the townland.
-
Carol and Leofric
having bashed away at it for most of yesterday, getting lots of USA results while looking for Irish ones, I think I've got the answer? maybe?
Never choose "New search" always choose "refine search",even if you're changing everything - seems to work for me
regards eadaoin
-
How do you search for dates after 1922 in BMD
-
Yeah....some success which I wasn't expecting ;D
3x greatgrandmother Catherine Duncan remarried in 1850, luckily whoever transcribed the index reference also included her maiden name of Finlay too!
I could so easily have passed over this one without a second glance! ;D ;D ;D
no sign of the first husband's death though! :o
now this is definitely a cert I need to buy as it will take me back another generation!
-
RE searching for records after 1922, I believe that these are not available for Northern Ireland, just for the Republic for Ireland.
More info can be found by going to the homesearchpage and clicking on europe, then going to the very bottom of the listings and clicking on Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes.
There should be a description of the information held therein.
Hope that helps - it doesn't seem to link at all!
-
I went on the site on Saturday when it first came on line.
Images were there then and I found it much easier to look at these as well as the transcription. You could even page back and forth in the indexes for each year to browse them. It was a bit slow understandably.
When I went on again yesterday the images were not coming up so I would imagine they have taken then down for now as they were getting so many hits and the site was being slowed down too much. The full images have been scanned and are of excellent quality and I am sure will reappear shortly.
Yes it is not perfect and will have teething problems for some time but I am so thankful this wonderful resource is now on line so I have no complaints, only praise.
-
Deirdre, the images were taken down due to the fact that LDS were only licensed to show them for a short period. They are working on getting them available again.
Dara.
-
Oaks and Acorns (Dara) thankyou for explaining that.
Seems like the license was for 48 hours only - anyway I am grateful I manged to look the the images on the first day, it really enhances the experience of searching.
There is a link on the search results page explaining how to read the results which opens up in Adobe and gives examples of the images themselves so this would indicate they definitely intend to make them available some time again. (Let us hope it is not in the too distant future).

hi carol
i just wondered how you went ordering the cert and did it arrive ok
perth :) :)
-
Yeah ,had no trouble ordering it,but they replied with " Not the right Mary Coleman as her father was not John" and they said had checked a few years either side of that date to find the right one too.....but to no avail.
My credit card has not been debited yet.....so maybe they aren't going to ;D
Bless the Irish 8)

I found my brothers and sister but was unable to find my late mother date of birth many thanks for putting this information on the site
-
I ordered three separate certificates, and all three arrived within a week - I filled in the form that was on the website, and put a cover sheet with the whole of the reference that I got from the database (minus the bits that are purely for the LDS), then faxed it.
I wish that it went beyond 1922 for the North!
-
Hi Lahsunc
thaths great news my mother was born in waterford in may 1905/1906 but unable to find a birth cert for her in our local office but i will keep up the search ..
