Is anyone researching the Flyng family of Bristol and the West Country in general? I am at a loss to find any leads...
-
Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)
It looks as though at least one Rootschatter is researching the Flyngs:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,317045.0.html
And if you're having trouble tracing ancestors, then I can assure you that many unrelated Rootschatters will be keen to help out. Just say the word!

Hi. I'm a Flyng and am having problems progressing back further than 1902! A bit pathetic, but I am new to this...! My father was Kenneth Charles Flyng born 1/9/1927 in Bristol of Carson and Lilian Flyng (nee Price). Carson was one of twins born in 1902. His brother was William. Mr father had a stillborn (I think) brother called Carson born 1932 and a sister (DOB inknown), who married and had two kids - a boy and a girl.
My mother was a Nettle, also of Bristol, and born 24/1/1927 to Frederick and Gladys Audrey Nettle (nee Nott). She had a sister named Thelma born 1925. And that is all I have - any help would be very gratefully received!!! No-one in this post (apart from me) is alive.

You guys are AWESOME! It just shows what dedication can bring. Thankyou all so much! If you are interested in this research, I would be most grateful for any more you may find on both sides of my family. For instance, I know my maternal grandmother had several sisters, though that is all - except I seem to remember from the days when I was a small child (in the days when God's dog was a pup) an Aunt Ivy, Aunt Edie and Aunt Elsie. There was also one in South Africa....? They are all deceased.
Alan.

Hi Alan,
Do you have Carson and Lillian's marriage certificate? If you have, this will give Lillian's age and father's name which will help to narrow down the range of Price families!
1851 Census
? Nicholas St, Bristol
Timothy Flying Head Mar 43 Master Tailor bn Cork, Ireland
Charlotte Flying Wife Mar 43? Wife bn Bedminster ??
Charlotte Flying dau age? Apprentice bn St Philips, Bristol
Hannah Flying dau 17 Apprentice bn St Nicholas, Bristol
Esther Flying dau 6 Scholar bn St NIcholas, Bristol
John Pook lodger 23 Butcher bn Uffeham? Devon
HO107/1948/55/11 The ages have all got thick crosses over them, so the above ages are best guesses I'm afraid.
-
Thank you all so much - I am overwhelmed with so much information at my fingertips after 50 years or wondering!!! And I am astonished at your collective generosity! TYhank you all again!!!
-
It`s been a pleasure, though I have been going quietly insane looking for the marriage of Timothy & Charlotte ;D I think this could be it:-
Timothy Fleing (of this parish) & Charlotte Long Wilcox (of this parish)
11th May 1829 at St Philip & St Jacob - Banns
Sue
-
Thankyou Sue. I am very grateful indeed. You are an incredible sleuth!
-
So this is where you all are! I lost you when this thread got moved ;D
I would appreciate it if someone else could cast their eyes over the census entry here:
HO107/372/5/8, and see if they think Charlotte's age is really 10??!!
1841: Nicholas St, St Leonard, Bristol
Timothy Flyng 30 Tailor
Charlotte Flyng 10
Charlotte Flyng 7
Hannah Flyng 6
All born in county
-
Looks like 10 to me as well ???
Sue
-
Hi Alan,
Do you have Carson and Lillian's marriage certificate? If you have, this will give Lillian's age and father's name which will help to narrow down the range of Price families!
Here is the marriage of your mother's parents: Frederick Nettle mar Gladys A Nott Jun qtr 1924 Bristol 6a 498. Again, this would give their ages and fathers names (if you don't already know them!)
Have you seen this site - www.freebmd.org.uk ? It is a partial index of the birth, marriages and deaths since civil registration started in 1837. It is pretty much complete upto 1920, with some coverage later on. It's an invaluable tool, and really easy to use! Not to mention free.
-
Looks like 10 to me as well ???
Sue
Hmmmm, so are we looking at a cousin of the family?
-
On IGI there is a Charlotte Sarah FLyng ch 27 Mar 1831 to Timothy FLyng and Charlotte Lang. Which would account for the first Charlotte. So what about the second?
Sorry Sue, just noted that you'd got the above from parish records
-
Do you think it could be an Enumerator error ??? I couldn`t find anyone else with a similar name when I checked my transcriptions.
Sue
-
Don't know, it's an odd one.
There is a death for a Charlotte Long Flyng in 1858 and a marriage for Charlotte S Flyng in 1866. I presume thats mother and daughter.
-
Hello all. I am sorry I have not acknowledged your latest information - I havae been ill in bed and clambered out of my pit today to squint at the world and was made happy to see that you are still kindly digging into my family! I will try to find moe information about my mother's side, but unfortunatley my brother and I are unaware of any close relatives to ask. But I will keep digging away and come back if I get stuck... thanks again!!!
Alan.
-
Hope you feel better soon Alan!
-
Thanks for the good wishes - I'm just concentrating on not myself becoming one of those statistics you end up finding in dusty databases :P! Lol !!!
-
Hello all.
I was laid low for quite some time but I'm out and about again. Still trying to broaden the family search, as Ireland was very difficult to understand and even more difficult to follow up! So, if anyone is interested in reviewing this thread and trying to expand it, I would be very grateful. My brother, who like me thought we were the last of the Flyngs, is absolutley gobsmacked!!! Thanks everyone.
Alan.

Costumier I hope you still are searching for information for the Flyng family history. I have in my possession a Bible presented to William C Flyng of 3 Nicholas St. Bristol as a birthday present on February 18th 1862 from a Philip Harris. It was in old family documents of my mothers. Please respond if you are still searching.
-
HI,
Not sure if I am doing this the correct way but heres hoping! My GG Grandparents were Michael and Hannah Flyng of Cork, living in Bristol. He was a Tailor same as Timothy. What I'm wondering is if they could possible be the parents of Timothy. They are listed in the 1851 census as Michael Hannah, Henry and Catherine. Catherine is my Great grandmother DOB 1826 Bristol. Henry died in 1850, Michael in 1859 and I cant find death record for Hannah but can find her in the 1861 census listed as Anna Fling, correct address of Pithay St. Also noted something had Kate on a census or 1861? as his sister. I was in Bristol in May 2011 and couldnt get anywhere there as far as cemetery records.
-
Hi DianeJ,
I’m not sure if others are still active here, but I have just now come across this forum while also researching the family of Timothy Flyng. I noticed Hannah and Michael’s family in the 1851 census. Do you know where in Ireland they are from? Timothy consistently reports in censuses that he is from Cork, Ireland. I am wondering whether he is the following Timothy:
Timothy Flyn, bapt. 20 Nov 1808, of Quarry, Cork, Ireland, son of Corns Flyn and Cath Leahy, sponsors John Donovan and Honora Flyn
(Parish area: South Parish, Cork (St. Finbar’s, Christ Church, St. Nicholas, St. John of Jerusalem; Book n/r, Entry n/r, Page 311, Identifier: CR-RC-BA-62305)
If the two are families are related, that could be a very useful clue, as I am having difficulty confirming the above connection for Timothy’s parents.

gitane59, I would be very interested in the Bible you mentioned, as William Carson Flynn was my great, great grandfather. His daugther, Elizabeth Emily Flynn, married my great grandfather, Ernest Kingdon.
Does the Bible contain any family information or interesting notes? I am always curious about the personality of my ancestors.

Hi cyningdun,
Michael and Hannah Flyng are listed on some of the census as coming from Cork Ireland and Timothy Flyng in Bristol who is the father of William Carson Flyng and had Kate, sister, listed on one of his census, 1861 I think. Kate is listed as 35 yrs which corresponds with Catherine being born in 1826. Kate (Catherine) married John James Wheeler (they are my great grandparents) If you check out the 1841 census you will find Michael and Hannah listed with 2 children, Catherine (Kate) born 1826 and Henry 1821 I think. I'm almost certain Timothy is a son born much earlier in Ireland. Both Michael and Timothy were tailors as well. I have a death cert for Michael, cant find where Hannah died or death cert, cant find one for Catherine but its possible she died in Portugal.
Henry is in Arnos Vale cemetery in Bristol or at least there is a Henry Flyng there. The swapping from Flyng to Flynn doesnt help much either. I was going to employ a geneologist to look into Hannah Flyng, Catherine Flyng and Timothy Flyng but wondered if it was worth it.
-
Hi DianeJ,
I see where you’re coming from. I had noticed Kate in the 1861 census, but was unable to clearly make out the relation to Timothy, and thought no more of it. Looking at it again, “sister” is a sensible interpretation. The dates match up for her to be Catharine the daughter of Michael and Hannah, and with the trades in common also there is good (though circumstantial) evidence that Timothy is Michael and Hannah’s son.
Do you have the the record for Kate and John Wheeler’s marriage? I am assuming there are no clues in the documents you have as to a connection with Timothy. I will keep looking along these lines -- as I said, I am just starting with my Flyngs. If my efforts are not fruitful, your genealogist-hiring plan may become temping. :)
-
Hi,
Yes I do have a copy of the marriage cert for John and Catherine. Nothing relevant to Timothy on it but if you want a copy I can scan and send to you. Its difficult from Australia to do anything much because you cant really make too many phone calls as you would get transferred all over I'm sure. We have been to UK a few times but you cant take up too much of Partners/friends time with geneology.
I did go to maybe a library or something like that in Cork but found nothing. I went down the line of tailors but Michael and Hannah were dead poor so not much luck there. What I cant understand is why I cant find a death cert for Hannah? She was till alive in the 1861 listed as Anna Fling living in Pithay St Bristol. I did find a marriage cert for Timothy and Charlotte but there was nothing on it of any help. Go onto Ancestry and you should find my tree under Wheeler/ John James and Catherine should bring it up for you. I do have info about Timothy, Charlotte and their children etc. Any problems finding it get back to me on ajbsqld@bigpond.com
Cheers Diane Reeves

Thanks Diane, I will take a look at your tree on Ancestry. I’m in Canada, so I’m not as far afield as you are, but I appreciate the difficulty of remote research.

Good luck

Thanks for that. Timothy and Family are not too hard to find but the parents are the difficult ones. I think they were so poor they were in the work house hospital. I have tried ringing the cemeteries with no luck. I have a death cert for Michael Flyng but not for Hannah or daughter Catherine. However I will try the papers and see what I can find. I have the feeling that Timothy was more affluent than the rest of the family.

I have the feeling that Timothy was more affluent than the rest of the family.
I think you hit the nail on the head with that... I just found another Want Ad he ran in the Western Daily Press Wednesday 15 May 1861:
WANTED, immediately, a Good COOK, also a HOUSE and PARLOUR-MAID. Neither under 30 years of age. They must both thoroughly understand their duties. None with written characters need apply. - For address apply to Mr Flyng, Tailor, Nicholas Street, Bristol.
I'd settle for any one of those!
-
The 1871 Census has a Hannah Flynn, age 80, born 1791, Cork Ireland living in the Bristol City Workhouse, Fishponds, Stapleton.
There is a death registration for a Hannah Flynn the following year, registered in Clifton, which encompassed the area of Stapleton, and lists her age at 81.
Maybe that's her?
-
Thanks bbart, that’s stellar. It really helps to flesh things out with Timothy’s family. Plus a good lead on Hannah. Very exciting!

I just wanted to address the part I quoted in bold:
There is a newspaper article in the Western Daily Press dated 21 Nov 1933 which reads -
Fatally Scalded
The story of a child's death from scalds
was told at an inquest held yesterday by the
Bristol City Coroner, Mr A. E. Barker, on
Carson Flyng, aged 21 months, whose
parents live at Ilminster Avenue, Knowle.
The child, unseen, drank from a teapot and
was scalded. A doctor was called and the
child later died on the way to the Bristol
General Hospital. Death was due to
asphyxia and a verdict of "Accidental
death" was returned.

Hi I have determined that William Carson Flyng and Maria Flyng (nee Stevens) is also my GG grandfather.
Their Daughter Charlotte (Lotty) married me G Grandfather John Reed.
My only problem with all this is the date in the bible indicates his birth year was 1862 and all the records and trees that I can find indicate he was born in 1852.
Since I know from the headstone that Charlotte Flyng was born 1872 it makes sense that her father was born 1852 not 1862 as the bible seems to indicate.
The fine script writing in the bible is very clear and I have had others read and confirm that the date as written is Feb 18th 1862.
Any help that allows us to clarify these dates helps us all I believe. Thanks
-
Just to throw something else in.
I have a FLYNG in my tree through my BARRINGTON line.
She is Elizabeth FLYNG (1823-1891) married to William George BARRINGTON. She later remarried and became a LORYMORE and had a daughter called Elizabeth Flyng LORYMORE (1860-1891).
I have Elizabeth Flyng LORYMORE's death certificate and her half-brother Henry BARRINGTON is given as the informant/"in attendance". If it helps ring any bells, the place of death is 100 Pennywell Road in the sub-district of St Philip and Jacob (Barton Regis, Bristol).
So sorry I've not seen this until now or your response to my "Bristol FLYNGs" thread from 2008 (link included below). I'm only just getting back into all this and have a lot of catching up to do!
If I come across anything else of relevance when refreshing my memory, I'll let you know. :)

Hi Vicky, I havent come across and Elizabeth Flyng in my research. My GG Catherine Flyng was born in 1826 in Bristol, mother Hannah father Michael and pretty sure, brother Timothy much older. Timothy seemed to have a few children, Charlotte, Hannah and Carson, the latter name seems to have been carried on. Do you know who Eliz 1823 parents were. Timothy was married in the area your Eliz Lorymore died so maybe they were all part of the one family, its just proving it thats hard.
Cheers Diane Reeves

Sorry, I don't know who Elizabeth Snr's parents were nor any of her siblings, if she had any. :(
So confusing having lots of potential connections but no way of connecting them!
