Title: Swainthorpe/Swinethorpe, Lincs
Post by: valr on Friday 23 January 09 20:46 GMT (UK)
Hi all
My gg gran Elizabeth Brookes was born in 1838 in Lincolnshire, in Swinethorpe, sometimes spelled Swainthorpe in the census returns.
I have looked on maps and it appears to be either a tiny tiny hamlet or indeed just one HOUSE!
Does anyone know the area? I would be grateful for any info.               '#

Hi Valr

It is Swinethorpe and it is near Lincoln and is between Wigsley and Doddington. It is about 4 miles west of the western suburbs of Lincoln.

Thanks for that, Ben and Geoff! It looks like a farm, don't you think - which seems odd to put as a birthplace on the census.
Strangely her father John Brookes (a blacksmith) just gives his birthplace as Lincoln  and none of her siblings were born in Swainthorpe - suggesting maybe they were visiting the place when she was born? But I cant find any other census returns in any name with that as the birthplace. very strange.
Any suggestions?

Hi there,  It appears we have a common ancestor. :)

Ann Isabella Brookes (sister to Elizabeth) was my great great grandmother.

I've checked my records of Elizabeth and the 1841 census says her birthplace was Lincolnshire however the 1851 census says Swinthorpe. There is only 6 and half miles between Lincoln and Swinthorpe so its possible.

What did you know about the Brookes family?  Would love to hear more.

Lisa

Have you searched the parish registers?

Eagle, the village next to Swinethorpe,  has a Sarah being baptised to John and Mary Brooks, of Swinethorpe.  John's occupation given as blacksmith.
