Hi
Can sks tell me whether the parish records for Bridekirk/Brigham/Cockermouth are at Barrow in Furness or Whitehaven. My mind has gone blank.
Many thanks for your time.

They are certainly at Whitehaven, I'm not sure about Barrow. You could always ask- http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/default.asp

Hi Geoff
Many thanks for this. I would prefer them to be at Whitehaven as I go up and stay with family and friends, but I had it somewhere in the back of my mind that the records for that part of the county were elsewhere.
Are you aware of there being a definiitive list anywhere that shows what is where.
Again many thanks.

No.
At Whitehaven I've looked at Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Bridekirk, Ennerdale, Workington, Wigton etc and others (CofE register films) so I suspect they probably have them all. Not sure about Westmorland and Lancs (Furness) though. Cemetery records for Whitehaven and Workington can be useful.
There is a book of Bridekirk transcriptions which has more entries than the microfilm of the register, so there must be another "original" source of those records. I say this, as you may have an IGI entry which you cannot find in the register film, but it's in the transcripts book.

I'd never heard of Bridekirk until its popped up in my Johnston searches, at Great Broughton village.

The book of Bridekirk PRs is:
The Registers of Bridekirk. 1584-1912
By Eng. (Parish) Bridekirk, John Francis Haswell
Published by Priv. print. for the Cumberland and Westmorland parish registers society by the "Herald" company, limited, 1927
415 pages
I found it on google books. I live in France and cannot "read" it but maybe those of you accross the pond can?

Elz,
I'm fairly sure that Bridekirk church is famous for having runes over the door which means it was based on a pre christian site. If you have relatives there, it may be worth checking it out. (If it's not Bridekirk, it's the next door parish but it's 20 years since I was down that way.)

Thanks Bob. Looking round churches is a hobby of mine too ;) Love unusual features and signs of older usage. Thanks!
