Title: Barnstaple/Torrington. SMYTH Births/Marriages
Post by: Minniej on Friday 23 January 09 10:28 GMT (UK)
Hi im new and ive ive done this wrong then a thousand appologies :-[  Im from Tasmania and have been researching many branches of my family tree.

I have information for my SMYTH side but i am stuck on births and marragies for a few names.

Allen Blackmore Smyth was born in 1835 in Torrington. (barnstaple)

His Father was a George  (also refered to as richard)Smythe who married Ann Blackmore (daughter of a richard blackmore)

Would there be a record of their marraige?
And also their dates of birth and deaths.

Same for Georges parents who were John Smyth who married a Joanna boyle.

Johns father i believe was a Thomas smyth. (i have no information )

thank you very much if this is obtainable  :)

George smyth and Ann blackmore where the Parents of CPT Allen Blackmore Smyth/e Who was born in Torrington in 1835

Hi Nicki

I see you've got sight of the 1851 census now, which confirms Allen's birthplace as Torrington. When I get the chance I'll dig around a bit in the NDRO for a baptism - possibly a parish near Torrington?

There is someone with a tree on Ancestry researching the same family - I assume its not you as they seem to have taken the Smyths back several generations further in Marwood

Hi Nicki

The details are in Ancestry's "One World Tree" - I'm not sure what that is or how its put together, but the details are as follows:
George Smyth (b Jan 1802) Marwood
Ann Blackmore (B 1802) North Huish
Marriage 5 Feb 1825. Children:

Elizabeth
Mary
Eleanor 1832 Marwood
Allen Blackmore 1835 Torrington
Charles Blackmore 1836 Shirwell

George's parents are given as:
John Smyth & Johanna Heale - dates of birth guessed as 1761 & 1764. Dates of marriage & death as you have them.

Children: Elizabeth (c1786) John (c1794) George (c1802) Ann (c1804)

John' s parents are:
Edward Smyth (c1734-14 May 1830) Marwood &
Wilmot Lock - married Martinhoe 28 Feb 1761
Children:

John (c1761)
Thomas (1762) West Down
Susannah (Nov 1764 Marwood)
Mary (Dec 1766) Marwood
George (Mar 1769) Marwood
Jenny (Dec 1771) Marwood

Thomas' father is given as Edward Smyth - no dates

I've no idea where this originated or how accurate it may be

This si the bit that is confusing me  greatly. AS on his seamans ticket he has listed barnstaple but he names his house Torrington after where he lived.

so any info you could find if any would be greatly apprecited

I've found some people very accurate with their birthplaces in the 19th century - & others just as vague. Allen has Torrington as his POB in 1851, but he was brought up in Barnstaple. As far as the seaman's ticket is concerned, he may have given Barnstaple as it was a port & Torrington is several miles inland - it might have seemed more "suitable" to give a port town. he obviously considered Torrington as his birthplace, judging from the fact that his house was named after it.

I meant to say in my previous post that I've dug a little into the Ancestry records. It seems that their family trees are constructed by a computer!!! (using submissions from real people). So I would be careful - like George's baptism, where we know the PR is missing. Of course, it may be that the Bishops Transcripts survive, but I doubt it

Thanks Steve, I went and had a look too and those world trees  do seem a bit odd.

Ive printed it out and will look further into it :)

i reckon he knew we would search him one day and hes giving us a hard time :D

Question about Torrington. Which one  :-\ ive found 3 differnet ones o n the map?   :D

Hi Nicki

I can't help with the naval question - you could try "occupations", or perhaps contact a moderator to ask.

There are 3 Torringtons - Great Torrington is an ancient market town (& probably the one in question, as everyone refers to it as "Torrington"). Little Torrington is a village just to the south of Great Torrington, and Black Torrington is further south still - halfway to Dartmoor. The villages are always referred to with their qualifier.

Pilton Street (where the family was in 1851) is still much as it must have been in 1851 - would you like a photo?

I'm trying to figure out if Ann Blackmore b 1802 in North Huish is the brother of my GGG Grandfather Richard Blackmore b 1801 in North Huish.  I've noticed that you've said Ann Blackmore's fathers name was Richard Blackmore so it makes sense that these two are siblings.

I've hit a brick wall!  :-\
