Title: Incoming passenger list for 1878-1960 [COMPLETED] thankyou
Post by: johngirl on Friday 23 January 09 07:04 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

Can some kind person check the incoming passenger list for a Otho Desse Greaves.
I have no idea were abouts he would come from. He was born in 1875 and married my Great aunt in 1895 at Toxteth Park Liverpool. Not sure even where he was born. Only know his birth year which may not be right from the marriage certificate.

Thankyou downunder  :)   Thankyou ShaunJ :)

I think I may have finally found my G Uncle. On his marriage certificate when he married my G aunt Rhoda it said under occupation that he was a mariner  :)  .He had disappered in the 1901 census. Aunt Rhoda remarried in 1926. Will have to find a divorce for them.

Here's a puzzle for you:

He was on the  MS Apapa arr Plymouth from W C Africa December 1930. He's accompanied by wife Rhoda Alberta aged 53. Address Forcados South Rd Drayton Hants.

So was this Rhoda Alberta Isaac...or did he have two wives called Rhoda Alberta?

Are you sure about Rhoda's remarriage in 1926?

Rhoda Alberta Greaves age 34 from Liverpool is in the 1911 census in Portsmouth.

I did a search for other Greaves in Portsmouth with a Rhoda Alberta Greaves in the same household and up came a listing for Herbert Arthur Albert Greaves age 14.

Well.

And all this time I thought her husband had done a bunk [or died] and left her and she remarried.   ::)
Yes Rhoda Alberta Isaac was his wife.
Now I definetly know she never remarried. I must never asume things should I.  :-[ My cousin gave me this information about G aunt Rhoda remarrying. Will have to tell him the news ;D
ShaunJ I also found that information. on the 1911 census. I haven`t checked the actual transcript as yet.[ a bit broke at the mo  :-[   ] Herbert Albert Greaves was her son. Arthur must be an error I thnk. Herbert was born in Toxteth Park in 1896. He was named after my Grandfather Herbert Henry Isaac who emmigrated to Tasmania  sometime between 1891 and 1896. He was also a mariner here in Hobart Tasmania and then became a Lighthouse Keeper.

Thankyou ShaunJ for finding this juicy bit of information for me. :-* :-*

And they were on the Appam - an Elder Dempster vessel - arr Liverpool from Lagos in March 1926 - he is described as a "Steamship Company's Agent" - perhaps he was the Elder Dempster agent in Lagos?

Blimey :o

Otho and Rhoda were certainly busy and  here I thought that aunt Rhoda would have had a most boring life ;D No she was trapsing all over the place with her not dead husband who seemed to be a well to do person.

I`m named after my G aunt Rhoda but my dad added an n and made it Rhonda.

Here`s me put completed on the post ::)

All I have to do know is find where they died and are buried. But where ???
They could be from England to West Africa ;D

I did find a birth for a Frank L O Greaves born Portsmouth in 1914 mothers surename was Isaac. Maybe I better have a closer look at this one. :o

Herbert may have had a brother ;D

Thankyou once again for the details ShaunJ. I see that you can get records of the seaman. Will have to send the National Archives or Maritime Museum an email to find out some details on how to get records about them.

 Regards Johngirl :)

He was a captain so there should be something in the Captains Registers at the Guildhall Library in London.

They are building an online index but they haven't done the G's yet!

Oh this is fantastic :)

I have goggled and googled trying to find information on Otho Greaves. I musn`t be doing it right ::)
I had searched mainly for mariners but that didn`t give me any details on an Otho Greaves. No wonder I couldn`t find him looking for a mere mariner. He was a Captain :)

If I had looked a bit harder I would have found him. Thankyou ShaunJ and downunder for your all your efforts in helping me.

Do you think this Frank Lewis Oliver Greaves would be a son to Rhoda and Otho. They seem to be living in the same place [South Road,Drayton,Hants] or would this just be an Accomodation Place for Mariners and Captains that sailed for the Elders Dempster Company or other Companys?
I have googled but can`t find anything about Accomodation Places for Mariners etc. ::)

There are possibly more children to Otho and Rhoda so I will have to go and look. The difference in ages between Herbert Albert Greaves and this possible brother Frank seems to be a big gap. [Twenty Years] Well here I go asuming again ;D

  Thankyou once again.

Frank was born 1912 so the gap is 15 years. (  Portsmouth Q/E Dec 1912 2b   726 ). If you purchase the 1911 census image it should tell you how many children there had been up till then and how many had survived.
