I wondered if anyone could do some digging for me as i have no access to Ancestry? It regards my Husband's Great Grandfather (Benn) and Great Uncle (Harry) who served throughout the whole of the war in the RAMC.
I unearthed some info i found in some old papers belonging to Benn Dawson, which may help anyone to ascertain that they have the right man when doing any digging for me! (I have a strong feeling that Benn's name was mis-spelled though on documents as 'Ben' which doesn't help)!
Benn Dawson - Reg No: 343034
Unit: 34 bbs(?) RAMC
Enlisted on 23 Nov 1914 and mobilised on 5 Nov 1915
Left as a Lance Cpl
Private Harry Dawson - Reg No: 43100
No1 Platoon, 16th Manchesters, RAMC
I would be very grateful if anyone could find them for me and any information would be greatly received. Thank you.
Kind regards, Erica.

If you could pop up what you have I'm sure that will help us with unit IDs and then histories.
As for your Madchester chap, the best gurus for all the bns are this lot...

A number of them do appear on here but a nudge there will help!! ;)
Now then, did he re muster to the RAMC? As he would not have been in both at the same time!

Hi,
Thank you for replying. The info i posted is all i have i'm afraid. It was written down by Benn inside a notebook he used while away.
We know that Harry served throughout with the RAMC, so the Manchesters reference was a surprize to us, but my Husband (ex-RAF), thought he may have been attached to them like the Royal Engineers etc....
Sorry, i can't be of more help!
Thanks, Erica.

There are around 18,000 + hits for Dawson on Anpestry, but none match your chaps numbers...How odd...
Perhaps it is my searching...There must be some medal cards out there!
The NA site isn't playing for me tonight so I can't look there...Perhaps someone else will have a dig?

Hiya Erica, Harry married Jane Jackson of Borrowdale, had 2 daughters Maggie Maud Lesley 1903 and Mabel 1910, Aunt Les {never Maggie Maud she wouldn't admit to it} married Fred Harrison had 1 daughter Audrey she married Frank Mellor they had 2 children Stephen and Elizabeth. Mabel married Tommy Fee had 2 daughters Jean and Dorothy, Tommy was a Raf Bomber pilot he died ww2. Mabel married again 1949 another 2 daughters Judith and Joyce. Jean Dorothy ansd Joyce moved to Perth Australia. Spoke to Jean she never knew Harry being in the forces as they ran a diary in Whitehaven for a lot of years. Ben worked on an ice cream cart for Grandma before going back to Langdale.

Hi - but this benn and harry our not the same ones as in my husband's family! I know for a fact that harry died without issue. (my husband's grannie - mary was his only sibling and she was about 8 years younger and told me this). i know all about benn's family as my mother in law is his only granddaughter, so she knows all about the family, and the people you mention are not the same family i'm afraid! (common names!) thanx

P.S - also our harry was born in 1898 so cud not have fathered daughters in 1903 etc! lol

Hi Erica, Strange goings on......My Harry 1872 Ben 1873 Maggie 1876 I think Great Granda Isaac. I keep on at it, Know they lived ELTERWATER/LITTLE LANGDALE got photo of the cottage somewhere. I keep going, thanks for your help.

isaac dawson was bens dad (b. 1842). ben was born in 1873 in langdale. (died 1958). he had a sister - maggie born in 1876 and brother harry born in 1872. benns SON harry was born in 1898, and daughter mary in 1905.
SO the harry you are referring to is benns BROTHER, not his SON!!!
i will tell you what i know about issac and his predecessors -
issac bibby dawson - born 1842 in nether wasdale. his occupations were: tailor, slate miner and general agricultural labourer.
he married mary grave on 2 nov 1865 in langdale by ambleside.
issac had 5 half siblings who his mother had wen she was married to william dawson.
william dawson died WELL before isaac was born in 1842, and on isaac'a birth certificate no father is shown! however, on the census of 1841, his mother, elizabeth dawson (nee rodgers), is shown as the householder of a small farm and living in THE SAME HOUSE is the FARM MANAGER - JOSEPH BIBBY!!!
I am guessing that joseph bibby (born 1806), was issac's father, hence the name 'bibby' in his name!!! so his offspring shpould have been named BIBBY and not dawson!!!
Issac's mother, elizabeth was born in birker in 1801, and married william dawson in 1820. she had 5 children with him - joseph - 1826, thomas - 1831, rodger - 1834, sarah - 1836, elizabeth - 1838. the 1841 shows no sign of her husband william dawson so he could have died?
the 1841 census also shows elizabeth's mother, also called elizabeth living with her who was born in cumberland in 1761. (haven't got any more info on that line).
i don't have a death date or place for isaac bibby dawson, but i have more info on his wife's line. -
isaac's wife was born mary grave in 1834 in oxen fell, hawkshead. she died in 1899 in kendal.
when she married isaac in 1865, she was a widow of john parker (born 1830), who she had married in 1862 in ulverston. (don't know date of parker's death). she had 7 siblings: ben - 1816, dinah - 1826, george - 1826, daniel - 1829, joseph - 1831, james - 1838, john - 1842.
mary grave's parents were: ben grave (1786 - 1844), who was a farmer of 50 acres employing 3 men! he was born in oxen fell, and died in ulverston. he married margaret dawson (mary's mom), on 10 dec 1808 in hawkshead. margaret was born in conistone, lancs, in 1791. i don't have a death date for her.
well, that is ALL the info i have on that line of my husband's family. benn's daughter, mary dawson, (your harry's niece), married harry nelson in 1934 and had one daughter - ruth in 1940. she is my mother in law! she married brian mcpoland in 1962, and had alison in 1965 and my husband andrew in 1968. i hope this info helps you out - we were all really surprised to find out about isaac's parentage, and my mother in law was pleased her mother wasn't around anymore to find out that she should have been called 'bibby' instead of 'dawson'!!!
kind regards, erica

Hi Erica, Thank you so much for your info, you have filled a few gaps for me. It gets very confusing when the family christian names are continued by the brothers family line, I've only started plotting it all out I should have done it years ago! I will talk to Jean again soon she said she met Ben when he came to Whitehaven now I don't know which Ben she knew. Hope you manage to get to Langdale and Elterwater the miners cottages where they grew up are still there. I'm sure Elizabeth is buried at Appleby I will check it out with Jean. Granda Harry used to stay with her when he came for holidays. He is buried in Whitehaven Cemetary. Aunt Les and Mam fell out with him over Grandmas money she was the moneymaker and owned a lot of property in Whitehaven and a mansion at Summergrove when she took ill she sold the mansion and moved back to town, she left the property to Aunt Les and Mam, he got plenty of money and went back to live with Maggie for a while, then to Ambleside. Lived the life of riley!!! I can still hear my Mam being given the news he had died "dig a hole n bury him behind a dyke" Needless to say Aunt Les and Mam paid for him to come through 2 counties [was still Westmorland and Cumberland then] Thanks again for your help.
