Hi

Have you only looked at the partially transcribed index on freebmd?   Transcriptions currently only go up to around 1930 so you will need to search the full GRO index.  It is available at your nearest main library

It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

Neither the place nor circumstances of his death would affect a death registration

I have a death certificate for a g.uncle who died in a mental asylum in 1964.  He didn't hang himself, but I doubt that would make any difference to registering his death.
