Title: Clement West
Post by: dianne50 on Tuesday 20 January 09 10:26 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have been trying to find out about my G G Uncle Clement West.

He was born 23rd May 1886 in Birmingham England to Alice and William West

He was later sent to Canada as a "Middlemore Homes Child" on the 15th June 1895 , he sailed on the "Carthaginian Ship from Liverpool to Halifax Nova Scotia.

He appears on the 1901 census living in Prince Edward Island and is employed as a "Domestic"

I found a reference to Clement in a family tree and he appears to have married a Margaret Annie Matheson. However the date of this marriage is not known by the tree holder and there is no other knowledge of either Clement or his wife.

I cannot find either of them on the 1911 canadian census, the only reference I can find is a Clement West in Quebec, but the age doesn't match and the relatonship to head of household doesn't match either.

Any help would be appreciated

Dianne

There are in the 1911 Canadian census 2 entries as West(?) __? one aged 26 and one 21.  The image is so dark I find it hard they could decipher anything.  These are in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Enumeration District 20.  Perhaps your Clement and his wife?

Do you know if he stayed in Canada or perhaps went to the US and married there.  Unfortunately I do not have a subscription that allows me to see the records in the US but there does seem to be Clement, Clem or Clemmies listed in the 1910 and 1920 census.  In 1920 they are in Kentucky, Illinois and Hamilton.

From the LDS Pilot project they were not showing any Clement or variations in the census records they pulled up that were born in England around 1886.  They did however show a Social Security Death record for Clemmie West b. 2 July 1886 (didn't say where) d. Oct 1975.  Last residence Stark, Ohio.  SSN 060-42-4277 Issued New York.

I certainly would try US records - any variations of spelling I tried for the first and last names in the Canadian census didn't pull up anything positive except for the record I referred to.

Good luck!

There is a post by Indiapaleale that you might be interested in titled New Brunswick recognizes Home Children.  There is a link to a newspaper article and at the end of the article is an email address of someone willing to help in searching for Home Children.

There were no entries for a Clem* West born in England on the US census for 1910 through 1930 that I could see. By the way, most of the Clemmies were women (short for Clementine).

Hi everyone,

Thankyou so much for all your help.

I just switched my computer on (9am UK time) and I got two messages from a lady who was related to Clements wife.

She has told me everything I need to know, he did live in Brandon  and he died in 1964, she has even sent the the obituary from the newpapers, he had one daughter (Frances) who later married and bacame Frances Drysdale, there are surviving grandchildren etc .

My search now goes forward to finding them

Again thankyou all for your help.
