i think i have found elizabeth in 1841 but cannot at this moment in time find george before the marriage.
1841
HO107/1033/4/10/14
elizabeth honeyball age 25. b. suffolk. occ. female servant.
she is in the household of thomas/julianne heston or weston. thomas is a colonel in the army
address;shadowbush,risbridge,poslingford,suffolk.
reg,dist. risbridge.
-
found only 2 george wallages in suffolk in 1841
one born in 1835 so obviously not him
the other one born 1801
1841
HO107/1039/6/65/20.
if you want the full entry for this george then i will post it here
that is assuming that he was in suffolk in 1841?
-
I wonder if the 1801 is my George
i think he died about 1846ish
because i find an Elizabeth Wallage widow in 1851 Census living with her son George
in Suffolk
-
i see there are two deaths in risbridge of a george wallage one in 1845 the other in 1846

I think you may have to become a little flexible with this surname as you progress backwards - for instance Wallidge, Worledge. I think your George Wallage originated - and was buried - in Poslingford which is the 1st village north of Clare.
The National Burial Index shows George WALLAGE 33 was buried at Poslingford 30/5/1846 (I also noted in Clare an Elizabeth Wallage 45 buried 5/4/1858 and a Mary Ann 11 bur.2/10/1855).
I then looked at the 1841 Census for Poslingford and found:
New England, Poslingford, Suffolk - ref. HO107-1033-4-4-3
Charles Worledge 45
Mary Worledge 45
George Worledge 25
Francis Worledge 10
Eliza Worledge 7
Betsy Worledge 6
Since the census and burial age suggest a birthdate of c.1815 I then looked on familysearch and found:
George Wallidge, son of Charles and Mary, bp.6/11/1814 Suffolk Bishops Transcripts
It doesn't show where this was but in view of the census I bet it was at Poslingford.
The 1851 Census for Poslingford (HO107-1787-466-4) shows Charles bc.1793 Poslingford, Mary bc.1795 Clare with dau. Betsy and grand-daughter Mary A. - all are shown as Worledge. Mary A. is 6 years old and born Clare. I also noted that Elizabeth Wallage in Clare was bc.1813 so she must be the one buried 1858 and presumably Mary Ann (with her grandparents in 1851) was her daughter.
Although shown as Worledge in Poslingford census the name was clearly Wallage as shown in civil registration and the NBI.
You need to now have a search done of the Poslingford records. There is a submitted tree on Ancestry which I've just viewed which concurs with my findings above and that George was born Poslingford 1814 and died 1846.
Good luck.
Annette
Looks like the Elizabeth

Jane, you can have a look at the church of St Mary Poslingford at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk to give you an idea of the village.
New England is a hamlet to the north of the village of Poslingford.
I did pop over there a few years ago to take some photographs for a researcher in Florida, have changed PCs since, but may have copies - if I can find them I will put them on here for you.

Hi Jane,
If you do plan to visit Suffolk, the records pertaining to the villages that you are researching are held at Bury St Edmunds branch of the Record Office.
Cowlinge (say Koolinj), Poslingford, Clare are all within easy reach of each other (by own transport).
I like Clare, nice place to wander around, beautiful church and right next door to it is The Ancient House which is a museum and the local tourism office in the summer season. Our dog loves a walk in the country park which is where the castle was at one time, and it also uses the old railway track for some of the walks.
In July there is a wonderful Craft Fair in the grounds of the Catholic Priory, and you can visit the Priory and their chapel and the many craft stalls.

Hi,
Was really happy to see this post. I too am researching the same George Wallage, and had got stuck on his wife (Elizabeth's surname)
The George Wallage in question is my Great Great Great Grandfather
Only thing that confuses me is how he can be buried in Polingsford in 1846 when I too believed that his son George was 2 when he died and I believe George junior was born 1846?
Thanks
Clint

Hi Clint
My name is Jane
George b 1846 was my great grandad his daughter Jessie b1907 was my nana
I AM AFRAID I HAVE COME STUCK WITH THE WALLAGE side of the family
until i get to Suffolk when the weather picks up
What i want to know is how George came to be in Chesterfield Derbys from Suffolk?
How are you connect to the Wallages
Love Jane
-
Hi Jane,
What brought them to Chesterfield I don't know in all honesty - guessing it is because Grassmoor was a major player in coal mining - potential vocational calling perhaps?
What I can tell you is that after Chesterfield (my line of the Wallage's moved to the Dudley area of West Midlands).
My great Grandfather was John Arthur Wallage (on pre 1901 records listed purely as Arthur) who died in Chesterfield Jan 1963 just short of 80 Years old. He was married twice, it is from his second Marriage to an Emma Shaw (nee Smales) that (for want of a better phrase) I am eventually created. His youngest son Alfred was my Grandfather and he relocated to Dudley after WW2.
The George Wallage (born circa 1846) moved to Chesterfield with his family and noteably a son called George (who stayed at Chesterfield marrying an Eliza Glover and they were both the witnesses at my Great Grandfathers wedding) (John "Arthur" listed as a boarder I believe on the 1891 census). However George (circa 1846) appears to have moved back to Suffolk to live out his final years?
I have created as much of the family history as I can and would be more than willing to share with you what I have found.
PS: When I started this research over 4 years ago now I thought having an unusual surname would work to my benefit but here I am stuck in the 1840's - although until today I had not encountered the surname Honeyball - so Thanks!!

It IS very X Files! I know Bilston quite well and Tipton very well, I lived in Tipton for 4 years as my first home with my wife ( I actually worked in Tipton for 6 years)
When I was doing the research on John Arthur Wallage and crossed path with Eliza Glover I found it really strange to think she was (correct me if I am wrong) from Toll End?? Which was very close to where we lived.
-
thats right
i live in Bradley now
how strange is that
Elizas dad was William Glover b 1847 Wednesbury
Her mum was Sarah Ann Wood b 1848 Bilston
her grandfather was William Wood he was a canal boatman on the CUT lol here in
Bilston West Mid
Thats where i am stuck again
They are hard to trace the boatme
-
I didn't live far from you at all then! I lived on the estate at the back of a "cut" by the famous pie factory in Tipton! Got a good mate who lives Daisy Bank.
I have built my family tree on a free package (which was much better than some expensive alternatives I tried) called "My Heritage" Might be too late for you now but it is possible to link trees so we could share all our data.

That sounds great
