I wonder if anyone can advise how I go about finding in the 1911 census my great grandparents and their children.
In 1901 they were in Alexandra Road, West Ham. But they moved at some stage to Ilford- to 10 Stanley Road. I know for sure that 10 Stanley Road was their home by Feb 1917 when Alice and Maud married.
William Reginald Hill(b c1866) Bayswater?,
wife Frances Harriet Rose Hannah )often known as Rose) b c1864 St Lukes
and their children
William Stanley Sangster Hill (aka Stanley), b 1890
Florence Maud (Maud Florence) Hill b 1891(?),
John Oliver Claudius Hill b 1894
Esther Victoria Hill b1892
Alice Patricia Hill b c 1896
Ebenezer Attalicus Peabody (or Ebenezer Peabody Attalicus) Hill b c1892
and
my grandfather Percy (who sometimes used Percy Reginald) Hill b 1901.
Their eldest daughter who married in 1908 (living at Grange Road,Ilford) was by the 1911 census living in Ilford.
I have tried all variants and combinations of all of their names, some of their names, and been inventive as well!!!! Have looked Surrey, Middlesex, Essex, London and no joy.
I do not have an exact year of birth for Ebenezer as I have been unable to find his birth entry.
Any advice would be welcomed..many thanks in advance..Vicki :-\(New Zealand)

I have found the following
Percy Hill age 10 Rochford essex
Percy Reginald Hill age 11 In an institution Hambledon Surrey
Percy hill age 12 Bristol
Rose Hill age 48 Rochford Essex
William Hill age 45 Rochford Essex
put a coma in surname and then try forenames
I have also come across Hill transcribed Hiles, Hilt. Hills

Hi Sue,
Thank you so much for replying. I will definitely follow up the Rochford one.
I have tried using wildcards for first letter or first two letters of surname but it wont let me do it for the first one. Will try the comma.
Must say that two of the names you have there are not ones I have tried before - Hiles and Hilt so will add those to my list of possibilities.
Will let you know how I get on...once again many thanks...appreciate your time....Vicki (New Zealand)

wildcard feature is not yet implemented ....

Aaaahh..well that explains a lot. Have just tried the comma thing though and that works well even though I didnt find my bods!!!! Sorry will rephrase- I put in place Rochford and Rose Hill with William and then Rose with Percy but both came back with no result. Will keep plodding away at it.
Was hoping that the 1911 census would give an indication as to whether a few family legends were true or not .
Thank you once again...Cheers Vicki (New Zealand)

Well I am happy to say that I have finally found my family. However it took some strange workings.
In the end the one that worked was putting in Stanley Street,Ilford - that came back with 800+ results so I simply went through to where I thought the H would start and there they were as HILLS but with initials not names.
Great grandma was Mrs W Hills. Great grandad is not there so that needs some more work.
I also found another family that I was keeping an eye out for who I knew lived in the same street at one stage and who became related a few years later through marriage. They were as Sivermore instead of Livermore and Amy Livermore was Aney Sivermore.
But when I has previously tried by putting in 10 Stanley Street it didnt come back the Hill/s family so I do not know what number they were at but getting the transcript will give me that information.
So another trick is to put in only one initial then two may sometimes be the answer.

Hi Vicki.
You could try starting with no1 then keep going.............the number should come up eventually.

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for that....I have now got the transcript and it confirms that their address was 10. It appears that there are quite a few little tricks that can be used to great advantage.
Many thanks...Cheers -Vicki (New Zealand)
