Hi,
I think I may have fallen foul of boundary issues and might have been looking in the wrong place...I've been looking at Linchmere Surrey, but I now think it might be Linchmere SUSSEX?!
Please can anybody look up JONATHAN ROE for me -b 1789 in Linchmere. I'm wondering if he might have had any siblings too? and if possible who his parents were - although there is a record on the IGI which Tricia kindly spotted and it looks as though his mother may have been SARAH ROE but he was probably illegitimate.
I am also looking for the baptism of his son WILLIAM ROE but that I believe was in Bramshott which I think is in Hampshire?!? I have William's sons birth cert which confirms that William Roe was the father and his mother was a Sarah Roe (nee Cobb).
Any help most gratefully received! I'm really stuck with moving any further ???

Hi Little Londoner
Bramshott is indeed in Hampshire and as you guessed Linchmere is in Sussex. A small tip that I found comes in handy because I have the same sort of problems with the Sussex/Surrey/kent border is the Genuki parishes. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/Bramshott/index.shtml
totally invaluable site. :)

I shall bookmark it now...

Interesting - a Jonathan Roe was baptised in Bramshott 30 Apr 1756, parents John and Jane and noted as of Pitfold.
A sister Ann was baptised 25 Jan 1758.
Possibly related?
William Roe was baptised in Bramshott 5 Sep 1815, parents Jonathan and Sarah Roe. No siblings that I can see.

Aw, that's great Nell :)
Hmmm, interesting isn't it.... They could very well be related; the family seem to have been and stayed around those parts until a bit later on.
I believe William had siblings - Jonathan 1816, Edmund 1818, John 1826, Robert 1829, James 1831, Sarah 1835 but I believe they were all born in Linchmere. I don't have their baptism dates or parents names. I got the info from the same inherited family tree, but it has no sources on it. The census returns do seem to back it up, but when I can afford it I think I need to set up camp at the various record offices and try to get to the bottom of it all!! I'm desperate to get some further info ??? I know we are definitely related to William Roe who married Sarah Cobb, but that is the last certificate I can find so it's to Parish records now I guess?
Thanks for your help Nell :)

Hi
I can check the Linchmere registers when I next go to the RO in February. Unfortunately I don't expect to find anymore Roe baptisms other than Jonathan as they seem to have been extracted on to the IGI except for a gap 1812.
Will see what I can find.

I'm deperate to get there myself and see what I can find, but it's not going to happen for a while now... :(
I'd really appreciate that :)

:D :D :D :D :D
Oh, Jan - you're a star!! So Linch is in Sussex? I'll have a look in a min...
I had no idea there was such a place and never would have found that!!!
So how do I go about finding his mother then - do you have any handy hints?!
If she was a pauper I guess it would be worth looking at poor law records or equvalent - will have to look up what poor relief was at that time...
What if she's not in Linch - I guess look at all the surrounding places? hmmm, needles and haystacks!!
Thank you sooooooooooo much! :D

Linch is 2 or 3 miles SW of Linchmere - to be honest I thought they were the same place :D
I did look back to see if Sarah was baptised in Linch but no sign. Yes I would imagine poor law records would be your next stop.

Huh, shows how observant I am - I've been studying old maps and everything!!
I am eternally grateful for that bit of info Jan - it's been a real sticking point for ages! :D
