Title: Odd Wording on Entry of Birth HELP PLEASE!
Post by: piggywig on Sunday 18 January 09 14:55 GMT (UK)
I have a copy of a birth entry issued 1844 in Leighton Buzzard. Under the name etc of mother is written "Esther GRASSBY formerly KEMPSTER late PRENTICE". On previous and subsequent birth entries it is simply "Esther GRASSBY formerly KEMPSTER". As far as I can see, she was baptised KEMPSTER and married a GRASSBY, so I don't understand what the "late PRENTICE" means. I thought at first that her mother might have remarried under this name, but she didn't. The only other thing I can think was that perhaps she had been living with a PRENTICE, or perhaps he was the child's natural father. Has anyone any ideas, please?

Is it possible she had married a Prentice before she married the Grassby?
Have you got the Grassby marriage does she marry as a Kempster?
The only one I have with that wording it was the brides second marriage Poor lady her first husband died a month after the marriage.

have you tried searching for her under the name of Prentice at a time when she may have been a Prentice?

I wondered if she had previously married albiet a very short period of time?

Thanks everyone for the replies - yes, I do have her marriage cert to GRASSBY and she is down as KEMPSTER, minor, spinster so it doesn't look as if there was a prior marriage. Any other thoughts?

What was her mother's maiden name? Or did her mother marry twice I wonder. Was she born a Prentice then took a step fathers name Kempster which she grew up with.Have you got her birth certificate? Its an interesting one.

Esther KEMPSTER was bap 24 Apr 1819 Heath & Reach Beds. Mother and father were Thomas KEMPSTER and Mary. Mary SINFIELD was Thomas' second wife and they married 29 Oct 1793 in Leighton Buzzard. There is no earlier marriage I can see on the IGI for Mary SINFIELD. It's a real puzzle.

Is it possible that Thomas Kempster died wand Mary nee Sinfield married a Prentice?
Gosh this is weird

No, tried that one. Mother Mary KEMPSTER (nee SINFIELD) died in 1835, 9 years before birth entry and I cannot see a remarriage for Thomas. I suppose it could have been an error on the part of the registrar?

I would take a really good look at any Prentice families in the area and just see if there is some connection between the families somewhere.

I find when it's not obvious that it takes getting a really good look at the 'lay of the land' and that's where my clues and solutions to my puzzles come from.
