Hi, Everyone,
Like so many of you, I have paid for some credits and gone on the 1911 Census on line for the first time yesterday. Apart from sharing your disbelief at the plague of mistranscriptions (can't afford to view the original pages just yet!), I've discovered that my indefatigable gt-grandmother Hannah SHERWOOD (nee MILES) carried on producing children beyond 1901. In fact she had fifteen children between 1878 and 1907, when the final one was born, a Nelson SHERWOOD.
I remember a while ago starting a thread that wondered whether anyone could come up with examples of a woman producing children for more than 25 years or so, based on what I knew then.
Looks like Hannah was pregnant for at least 30 years of her married life.
Remarkable!
And as a final swipe at those mistranscriptions, would the enumerator really have put down the word "Nothing" under occupation for my 17-year great-aunt in 1911, or do I need to fund extra credits and look at the original...?
Very best wishes,
keith
-
Hi Keith
The schedules were completed by a member of the household and there is one page per household. So whatever is on there is completed by someone in the household and not an enumerator!

Hi Keith
How old was Hannah in the 1911 census? What was the age gap between her penultimate and last child?
Ben
-
Moira,
Thanks for putting me right on that one! Sounds as though the head of household - in this case her grandmother, who had grown up in the hardships of Suffolk agricultural life - was perhaps exasperated that her 17-year-old grand-daughter was a lazy bones around the house. (But I know of at least one Rootschatter on here who might take exception to that suggestion, so I'd better shut up!)
And, Ben, Hannah SHERWOOD's age in the 1911 Eastbourne Census is given as 52, though I'm pretty sure she could only have been 50 or 51 at the most. Penultimate children (twin girls) aged 7 in 1911; last child aged 4. Their mother must have given birth to her first child when 17, her last when 47 years old. Must have been the sea air...
keith

Hi
It is possible to have a baby at 47 years of age. She must have been healthy then with all that sea air as you say.

My grandparents appear on the 1911 census living with 9 children - the eldest was 25, the youngest was 3, and I know they had one more after that.
They also mistakenly (but handily for me) included 3 other children who had died and the one who was married and living elsewhere.
Incidentally, the "Number of Rooms" that these 11 people were living in was 4, and I assume one of those was the kitchen!

The mind boggles at how they managed to concieve all these children...in such close quarters!

I have 3 children myself that is enough! The thought of having 15 ahh no!!
I have discovered my grandfather had 3 siblings i knew nothing about (both he and my father died young so we know nothing about that side of the family). Also discovered his grandfather was dead and his auntie had married.
Happy days!

Moira,
her grandmother, who had grown up in the hardships of Suffolk agricultural life - was perhaps exasperated that her 17-year-old grand-daughter was a lazy bones around the house.
I don't think she would necessarily have meant that the girl did nothing Keith, I think it's more likely that it was because she didn't have a paid occupation. Perhaps she helped out around the house.
-
All very interesting, and I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek when I made the suggestion for the explanation about the "Nothing" entry, Roobarb! It's just that my gt-gt-grandmother had a bit of a reputation for throwaway lines, apparently, and after Moira's comment early on in this thread I just imagined my ancestor's very dry sense of humour coming to the fore...
Does the occupation description "Nothing" occur very often in this Census, by the way?
keith

According to a search, 4049 people did "Nothing" for an occupation. Guess there were a lot of teenagers around ;D ;D ;D

From someone who obviously has nothing to do, the following may be of interest to those who don't have the time to engage in such foolishness ;D ;D
Of the "Nothing" occupations,
1000 Wives
829 Heads
730 Daughters
483 Sons
195 Mothers
102 Sisters
91 in-Laws of all descriptions
72 Fathers
30 Brothers
27 Patients
20 Aunts
2 Servants
1 Uncle - John Srannage b. 1851 ;D ;D
1 Nurse - Percy Fricker b. 1898 :o :o Would love to see who filled in that form!
Couldn't think up any more relationships to the Head.

It wasn't unusual in those days for the illegitimate children of daughters to become children of their mothers to avoid family shame. The daughter would be hidden away until after the birth, and suddenly mother has another child at 47. This could account for the cutting remarks on the census form.
Just a possibility - I'm not trying to cast aspersions on the family :)
-
Wow! For some reason this thread is not being flagged up in my hotmail, but a very impressive bit of data on the "Nothing Doing" members of our society in 1911, Moira.
As for hidden parentage, that is quite possible, Nick - I know that in the 1881 Census under the MILES family in Eastbourne the family tries to conceal the true father of Hannah's first child as she was so young - but it would cost me a fortune in certificate fees to discover the truth. So I'll let any family skeletons quietly lie, or perhaps softly rattle in the SHERWOOD wardrobe...
Regards, keith
-
I'm intrigued at the 2 servants described as doing nothing. Does this reflect the householder's opinion of their worth?

I think I have something like this with a boy born in 1860, given an unknown surname as a second christian name. Sent off for the birth cert and discovered the parents registered I believe to be the boys grandparents.
Their daughter married a pilot who died couple years later, then she re-married, this time to a man with the same surname as given to the little boy. Interestingly he was also a pilot.
Can't prove a thing though, also the boy died aged 4.

This got me thinking what I would have entered for one of our teens .... and "sleeps" came to mind. So I did a search and there were 84 people with the occupation "sleeps"....and the majority of them appear to be between the age of 14 and 19. ;D ;D ;D
Couldn't find anything for "wastrell" or "lazy bones" unfortunately. Maybe I'm being unfair and there was a genuine occupation with "sleeps" in it.
I then did another search and there were two people who had their occupation as "theif".
I must have other more important things to do with my time - like the housework perhaps ;D ;D
Milly
-
Just out of curiosity, where are you Moira & Milly, getting these results from????
-
Ah curiosity ...that's what is keeping me from the housework...are you sure you want to know! ;D
If you go into the 1911 search page and clear everything you can then put a comma (or other random non-letter may work too) into the surname field.....
Then you just start thinking of occupations and put them in the occupation box and search...and it should tell you how many there are. Then you view the list and see who is there with that word. It may be that their occupation has more than one word so it's not that exact but helps you narrow things down.
You can start to narrow down by locality, other names in household, birth years etc if you are doing a serious search of course. (and obviously put a first and last name in the box if you were looking for a John Smith who was a baker for example)
Have fun!
Milly
-
Hi again,
Not the revelations I had in mind when I started this thread, surprised about the extra years of fertility of my gt-grandmother - but I'm finding all these occupational quirks fascinating for the year 1911. Anybody found any more oddities using Milly's clever technique?

Less than 10 were male! One a babe of 10 months....aaaah sweet child. The oldest a woman of 90... bless her.

5 are Skives.... whatever that is ;D
11 Bunk - what would that be ??? ??? ???
2 were Useless
29 are Pimps :o :o :o :o
3151 are Hookers :o :o :o :o Wasn't that illegal?
1 was a Gambler
1 was a Liar
21 Drink - all male :( :( :(
-
Skives - isn't that a word for doging school/work, as in one skives off work? Or a misspelling of skivvy maybe?
These are hilarious! ;D ;D ;D
I think I'll leave the searching to you two...I'm addicted enough to this site, without having something else!
-
There's one Phogger and 27 Foggers ::)
Fogger = Peddler; Middleman in the nail and chain trade; Agricultural labourer who fed cattle.
Susan
-
Moira,
And what was the name of the only professed "Liar" in the whole kingdom in 1911....? And it's no surprise that Ladbroke's or William Hill's or Coral's were not doing a roaring trade then if there was but the solitary "Gambler". Hilarious indeed!

;D ;D Oh dear, more ways to waste time ;D ;D
I've found 45 people with the occupation Fool, & 55 as Nuisance.

wow and I thought my hubbys rellies was a record 9 kids over 23 years.
-
My SHERWOOD great-grandparents actually produced NINE consecutive surviving boys before the first of their daughters was born. Hannah SHERWOOD must have been mightily pleased to have at last got a bit of female company in her household.
Think I started a thread about it on here over 4 years ago, and nobody was able to match or beat that as an unusual sequence at that time...
keith

Thought I'd look for an occupation that is difficult to make a living at these days.
There were 14 people with the occupation of "Fencing Master", including two who could be a married couple.
I trawled a couple of the resulting names on G**gle and one came up with a description ... from my club, LTFC. AMAZING ;D :o ;D
[checked and Agnes is a wife, is she a wife and a fencing master, I wonder, or just the wife of a fencing master?]
-
This thread has made me laugh, who says family history is boring!!!!!
lol Keith my great grandparents had 19 children, not all survived, but it was a mix of boys/girls. Am SURE Hannah was glad to see that girl born after 9 boys!
Cas :)

Are you as disappointed as I am to find that in 1911 'hooker' covers a variety of occupations, mainly in factories and mines?
But then again, about half of them are female, so you never know...
Mean_genie
-
I stand to be corrected, but I'm fairly sure that "hooker" is an American slang term for prostitute which would not have been in common use here in 1911. We've only been using it since the 1940's when American airmen brought the word over, and it's been used in American movies since the 1950's.

Just did a search and there are 42 people with the occupation "Prostitute", all of them female. The youngest ones are 19, and the oldest, 75! :o

Interestingly at the early part of the Labour movement there are 33 shop stewards.
Totally unrelated
5 communists
5 bullies, 2 of whom live in Grimsby
1 swindler, an 18 yr old girl
and 23 spies, a lot of whom were in Lancashire. I suppose there were industrial spies but ...
Must go and do some work

36 princesses including one Baggy Kramer, female, aged 10 months and living in Holborn.

There were also 39 princes, of whom 9 were women including the splendidly named Florence Nightingale Hignett.

Not from the 1911 census but the 1861 one - occupation "sick in bed". Someone had then crossed that out and written in a more suitable occupation (not sure what it was exactly) but a proper occupation, possibly a weaver!

Not as interesting as the above, but one of my relies next door neighbour in quite a posh area is listed as a proffessional billiard player. Not Steve Davis though.

Dipping my own toes in the tide of hilarity on here, I put in "Runt".
Contrary to the perceived knowledge that the runt of the litter never survives in the family long were just two survivors, one aged 17, the other aged 42, one named Charles, the other Miss Florence (not, I hasten to add Miss Piggy)...

This is hilarious!!
I wonder if they laughed as much as we are now when they filled in the form?

79 people seem to be "dead" ??? Will partial words come up in the search? If it does, what occupation could start with dead?
Elizbeith Bingham...Sex "M"... Age in 1911 "None" ;D ;D

Only two Whores came up, surprisingly. Even more surprisingly, one of them is a 35-year-old man. :o

Maybe we should sell our research on this thread to the popular press...
Just to be a bit boring in the middle of all this amazing data about how this country saw itself in 1911 - have now just seen the original image of that Census entry for my POLLARD family, in which my great-aunt's occupation was given as "Nothing" (The catalyst for this whole subsequent rib-tickler, in fact).
I see now that SHE was the one who filled in the details on the form, not her grandmother. So she was definitely being tongue in cheek, considering she was looking after at least her grandmother and two of her younger siblings...
keith
p.s. Now please keep things going with all those wonderful, witty, creative suggestions...

9 Knob polishers, indeed...I reckon from this lot we could draw up an amazing new song set to the music of the 12 days of Christmas, made up from the most bizarre (and hilariously amusing) occupations thrown up on here.
Glad to see that there was a bit of a break overnight to recharge batteries, too. The thread went to sleep for a while once Gaie had gone to bed just after midnight.
