Hello there
I am trying to find a burial of a John Finlay/Finley in the Ryton/Whickham/Gateshead/Lamesley area.
He was a farmer - his last child was baptised in 1799 in Lamesley, and his wife seems to have died in Whickham in 1832.
If anyone has indexes they could check for me I'd be very grateful - I am particularly interested in his age at death. I cannot find him in the 1841 so I presume he was dead by then.
All suggestions welcome!
Many thanks for checking!
All the best

Up through 1839 not in Lamesley, Whickham, Ryton/Winlaton or Gateshead Fell.

That is the worst new I could have.
Where do I look next?

I only have up to 1839, does not include 1840 or 41. Do not forget that I don't have Gateshead at all, also you may need to think about Findley/Findlay as alternate spellings.
The last child in Lamesley--where did it say John was a native of?--or what was his name and when was be baptised and I can look it up?

Hi Janis
On the last baptism is reads:
Jane Finlay
Tenth child of John Finlay of Loosing Hill, Native of Whickham, by his wife Hannah Fenwick, native of Chester-le-Street
I have never found abaptism for him in Whickham - the only ones I could find were in Lamesley and there are two of them, one in 1757 father John and one in 1764 with father Thomas. I assume the former is correct as his wife was born 1759, but I am keen to get his age at death to prove it.
Someone did send me a death reference for their first son George in Whickham - George son of John Finlay, Farmer and his wife Hannah, formerly Fenwick - it was on 28 nov 1806 and he is marked as 30 though by my calculation he would be 29 at the most (unless he was actually born before his parents marriage).
John and Hannah married in Gateshead St Mary.

Hi Janis
I am busy ploughing my way through the Gateshead burials on the Family Search site and I'm going to move on to Tanfield next but I was wondering if you had a Tanfield index you might check for me before I start?
Cheers

I looked in Tanfield 1813-1839 and no John Finley/lay. Not Lanchester, Chester le Street, Houghton le Spring either.

Thanks Janis that is a big help.
I've got up to 1811 in Gateshead (yawn) it was a very busy parish.
Cheers

Hello
My 3xG Grandfather was John Finley. He can be tracked thro' the 1841, 51, 61 & 71 censuses. In 1851 his birthplace is given as Streetgate, in 1861 it could be Sunniside and in 1871 it looks like Loosing Hill.
Using his various ages given in these censuses he was born between 1784-86 and on 30/12/1811 he married Mary Matters in Middleton-in-Teesdale. He died on 26/11/1871 aged 87 years giving a birth year of 1874.
I believe his parents are your John & Hannah. They married in 1777 in Gateshead. Their first child, George, was baptized in Whickham and their address was given as Lowhand, which I believe includes Dunston and is on the Tyne. The next two children are also baptized in Whickham, but the next seven are baptized in Lamesley and the given address is Loosing Hill.
Most work for people in Loosing Hill and nearby Streetgate was on the Tanfield Wagonway and many people living there were waggoners, wheelwrights & cartwrights. After 1800 this work fell off as steam power was increasingly used and the already small population dwindled and today the name Loosing Hill is no longer used.
All this is a long winded way of saying I think they could have moved away! So not much help there I'm afraid, I to am looking for John Finley's Birth & Death dates and if I find anything I'll let you know.

Hello Sandy
Welcome to Rootchat!
Yes we are talking about the same John Finlay - his wife was Hannah Fenwick of Chester-le-Street. He was in fact a farmer - this was marked on the baptism of his last child, Jane in 1799. Also his wife stayed put as she was buried 13 Mar 1832 in Whickham (where many of her family were living by that time)
I've been through all of the local parishes as well as those across the Tyne but with no luck at all - maybe he jumped in the river?!
Any assistance you can give me would be much appreciated.
All the best
Ashley
