Hello there,
I am searching for Michael O'Hare born c.1909, father's name Francis O'Hare. I am only guessing that he was born in Ireland (going by the name!) There is no trace of a birth record or appearance on the 1911 census in England.
I have no idea how to go about searching in Ireland or what resources I could use - any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
All the very best

you could have a hard time with a surname as common as O'Hare - probably the best place to try would be the 1911 census at :
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/
only four counties (Dublin, Kerry, Antrim, Down) are available at the moment - the others will follow soon. it is free to access..

Hello Shane
Thanks for the link, nothing on there yet, but you never know! I am looking for a bit of a needle in a haystack, I know his father was a shipbuilder so may'be there are some clues to be followed there. I'll keep looking.
All the best

knowing the fathers/son name combination should really help with the census searches when they come online.
The shipbuilder occupation should also narrow things down a little - about 17 counties have sea coasts, with the major ports and possible locations of shipbuilders being Belfast, Dublin, Derry (Foyle shipyard) and Cork/Cobh - other places like Arklow, Waterford and Galway could also be worth checking out.

Thank-you Shane,
Will follow your advice. Thanks very much for all your help.

Hi,
How have you gone with your search for O'Hare. Just having started one myself, I can see there are many O'Hares around the Belfast area. County Down in particular, which accords with information I have on my ancestors. Here is a link which you probably already have.

Sue,
Could this be them.... Father is Frank (Francis) he was a plasterer in 1911... could he have then changed professions. His brother is Michael on this and he is a Quay Labourer.. could he have got Frank a job there.

This is the only Frank with a son Michael born around 1909.

Hello Juliet,
Unfortunately I have progressed no further with my search for Michael O'Hare but with little to go on it is not at all surprising. I'll check out your link, any help is of course greatly appreciated.
He married my grandmother in Nottinghamshire in 1938, and by all accounts upped and left shortly afterwards never to be seen again. She eventually divorced him in his absence in the mid 1960's to re-marry. I'm wondering whether the divorce records might hold clues to his background etc. although I don't know whether these sort of records are available! Will have to investigate a little more down this route.
Many thanks.
Regards
Sue

Hello ambyrne,
This looks a firm possibility, I have never found a match for a Michael O'Hare with father Francis (I never though of the shortening Frank ::) ) born 1909. I have ruled out an English birth, so it has to be Ireland, pity the marriage certificate doesn't give that sort of information.
It is indeed highly possible his fathers occupation changed by 1938, I will hang on to this information to see if it fits in with anything else further down the line. I wonder if Michael returned to Ireland after he deserted my grandmother, he may have lived out his days there and even re-married!!
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Sue

Sue, not to throw too much of a spanner in the works, so to speak, but as you have said that you are only guessing that he was born in Ireland and that his father worker as a ship builder do not keep your research soley to Ireland. I have a great uncle who was born in Glasgow and married an O'Hare in that city. I have yet to do the research on this part of my family but I have it that she or her parents may have originated from Ireland (family tales and as yet not proven), being that the area of Glasow that my great uncle came from drew a lot of its workforce from Ireland to work in the ship yards there, it may be another avenue that you might want to explore but with little to go on it will be very hard for you.

there's a Michael O'Hare born 1909 Newry area (and one in Banbridge also) on this site
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
if you want to chance a few euro, you could get the birth cert of the Newry one.

Hello there,
Thanks for the tip Old Rowley, I had not considered Scotland, you have made me realise that I need to keep this in mind while searching. Michael O'Hare was a Motor Lorry Driver on his marriage certificate so obviously moving around was common-place to him.
Thanks also to eadaoin, I didn't realise familysearch had a record of Irish civil registrations, I have worked out that if he was 29 on 16th April 1938, his birth date would fall between 16th April 1909 and 17th April 1910, so I can narrow the search down by quarter.
Thanks once again to all of you who have given me hints and tips on my search, it's my only foray into Irish family history so your help has been invaluable.
All the best
Sue :)

You might want to widen the search to O'Hara as well.
-
Oh dear, this search just keep getting more complicated, I will add this to my list of considerations. :(

Ireland in maps when you put in O'Hare it comes up O'Hara and the O'Hara lived in Co Silgo and Leitrim, try going though www.google.com and when the box comes up type in O'Hara from co Sligo or O'Hara from Leitrim or O'Hare
-
Hello rathmore,
Thanks for the links, I will peruse them at leisure, there is obviously a lot of resources out there if you know where to look, hopefully these links will also help Juliet in her search too.
Many thanks

Sue (from 2009)
Just wondering have you got anywhere further with your search for Michael O'Hare, father Francis? I have just joined Roots Chat, and am interested in all O'Hares as I have been researching my own O'Hare ancestors from Co.Armagh for many years now.
As eadoin has pointed out already to you, Michael O'Hare, age 3, on the 1911 census from William St, Newry, Co.Down is the only one with a father Frank, and also the only one in the births on the "Irish family history foundation"website with a father Francis, baptised in Newry Roman Church in 1907 (Not 1909). You can get a copy of this birth cert on line through this website for a small fee, 5 euro here. Perhaps you have all this information already.
Regards,
Tiarna, Ireland.

Anyone know a Kevin Trimble**
His father, also Kevin died in N.Ireland and he and his mother**, returned to Australia, unfortunately I do not know where. I know this is a long shot, as I have very little information to go on. I am trying to put together a family tree, and am connected to Kevin through his grandmother Bridget Trimble (nee O'Hare). I would be most grateful for any information on Kevin.
Moderator's Comment: Names of living people aren't allowed to be posted on Rootschat so some details have been removed from this post. If anyone can fill in more recent family details it would be best done by PM (personal message) rather than online.

Hello Tiarna.
No, sorry I haven't managed to get any further in my hunt for Michael O'Hare after he and my grandmother separated, he may have been re-married and almost certainly would have died by now, so may'be I never will - Oh well, thanks for the input anyway. (I have sent you personal message.)
Many Thanks,
Sue

Hi Leanora,
Yes, all the variations make our research even more interesting! I will add O'Hear to the list of possibilities.
Many Thanks,
Sue

Hello , I have done some research on the O'Hare family, as this is my husbands family. His GGrandfather was a Michael O'Hare born approx. 1833 Backaderry County Down, Michaels father was a Patrick O'Hare, his Mother Bridget Keenan, The O'Hare name is very prevalent in Lietrim and Backaderry, which are small villages in County Down,we visited there, the churchyard are full of O'Hare graves. Our branch of the family came over to England around 1858, where Michael married Ann Mulheron also irish, they first settled in County Durham, where Michael died in 1880. The remaining family then came to Merseyside where we still live.

Hello again ,forgot to say you can contact P.R.O.N.I public records of northern Ireland. caroleoh

Hi there,
Is Michael O'Hare born approx 1911, father's name Francis in your tree? I never did identify Michael or what happened to him.
Sue
-
Hello, I can't say for certain as there are many O'Hare's with the same names. I can only tell you, it is very likely your Michael came from County Down, when we visited the O'Hare name was everywhere. My husbands ggrandfather was a Michael O'Hare born 1833 Lietrim County Down, his Father was Patrick,we can only guess his time of birth. My husbands granddad was born in England in 1880,Michael sen had died 6 mths before Michael jun was born. But as I say if you have any info on your relative, PRONI could help you. Also there is a very good website, Rosdavies northern Ireland, she has done lots of research has lists of nameswhich give some information, well worth you looking at that, Ireland ancestry is very difficult to research but you shouldn't have too much trouble if you are looking at the 1900s. caroleoh.

Thank-you, I had hoped you (or your husband) was directly descended from Michael and therefore had some inside family knowledge which may have helped me to identify him, never mind may'be one day. I'll try the link you have given me to see if I can come up with anything.
Warmest regards,
Sue
