You do not say exactly what you are looking for, but it may help you to know that in late summer 1916 Knutsford Prison was cleared of prisoners and handed over to the Brace Committee as Knutsford Work Centre, within the Home Office Scheme for the employment of conscientious objectors to military service.  This meant that men sentenced to imprisonment for disobeying orders in the army after forcible enlistment could be released on licence subject to complying with a rigoorous regime in a Work Centre, which involved not wearing prison uniforms, unlocked cells and freedom to go out in the evenings and on Sundays.

The Peace Pledge Union has a database of some 3500 WW1 COs, including a number who were at Knutsford.  To find out more visit

www.ppu.org.uk/coproject

Follow the links to contact the Archivist, who willl tell you whether the person you are seeking is known.  This advice is not relevant in the case of anyone definitely known to have been in Knutsford Prison before August 1916, but highly relevant to anyone known, or thought, to have been in Knutsford Prison between August 1916 and April 1919.

Hi barrylyons,

He had been involved in socialist politics in Dublin around 1901 but seems to have been living in England since well before the 1916 uprising.

He was a regular visitor to the Irish prisoners (in general, I think, rather than to particular prisoners) and it is said that the gaolers, for this reason, referred to him as the Irish Ambassador.

Hi Barry Lyons

Was this your relative :

Lyons, E. 15 Factory Terrace, Ballybough Road, Dublin

My great great grand father was in Knutsford also (Joseph Lee). He fought at GPO and was part of Padraig Pearses 'army'. His son Hugh Lee also fought at the GPO but did not get sent to England

Am interested in knowing anything you you may know about Knutsford or related info....

HI and thank you for the reply, Yes that was My grandfather , he lives in 15 Foster Tce ,A lot of the 2nd battalion lived around the area. He fought in Jacobs and ended up a few times in English Prisons.
I dont know to much about his time in Knutsford, but in April of this year a group of us went to frongoch in Wales which was interesting to say the least.
I must check the records for your relation as at present I am also part of a group which are trying to the the Irish Gov to declare Moore street and the surrounding battlefield site a historic quarter. We have done quiet a bit of research into the GPO garrison .

Hello Barry

I am unable to work out how to PM you ?

Thanks for the quick reply also.

I am only new to all this looking into my family history. Only got into it in the last few years when some one mentioned that there was a rumour DeValera attended my great grandfathers funeral. Supposidley the Lee Family from Rathfarnham were well known (wink, wink). I was born in Rathfarnham and only lived a few minutes from St Endas Park (Hermitage) were Padraig Pearse managed the school. Looking back in the last few days I've seen my relatives being mentioned in eye witness reports, as having left Rathfarnham before the rising, to travel by tram into the GPO when it all kicked off.....all very interesting. If you need to get in touch I'm on Face book and Linked In......there is only one of me out there ( terry beakhurst ).

Would be good to hear from you and maybe you could help in directing me to other sites that may be good or places of interest
Good luck, and thanks in advance, Terry
