Does anyone know when the 1911 will be available on ancestry? I have a few surnames that get mangled during transcription and i cant find the people im looking for using the search available at the moment.
Thanks

Hi Mafric
I e-mailed them last week and this is the response I got
Thank you for your email.
We don't currently have plans to purchase the 1911 census early. We are currently focusing on sourcing historical records that go further back in history and will soon be launching the London Metropolitan Archives collection, which includes pre-1837 parish registers.

I gather that when the rush dies down and people are less "willing" to pay 1911census.co prices, it will become available on Findmypast as part of the standard package. After that it will become available for other sites to purchase, but I doubt much will happen before 2012.

I agree - I doubt whether you'll see it on subscription anywhere (including FindMyPast) until 2011. I think Brightsolid/FindMyPast would insist on at least a couple of years of exclusivity before they let anyone else near it. This will have been written into the contract between Brightsolid and the National Archives.

according to the 1911 'blog', they are saying later in 2009 .....

some cracking comments there too ;D

The SoG seems to think that the exclusive licence lasts only six months (albeit from the "final" content launch):

However it is our understanding that the exclusive licence issued to Brightsolid/Findmypast as the sole online provider will last only 6 months from the final content launch.
Once the full exclusive licence has been operating for 6 months other online providers will have the opportunity to purchase the scanned images and get a licence to provide their own indexes
No wonder they charged like a wounded bull during the Beta, and are releasing it in stages .....

Yes, but if you read the final paragraph it becomes clear that the "all you can eat" option including the 1911 census is very likely to be dearer than the current subs.

Read the search tips for looking on 1911 (on here); there are several ways to search more creatively.
-
The point was about WHEN a subscription for the 1911 would be available - not how much it would cost .
but if you read the final paragraph it becomes clear that the "all you can eat" option including the 1911 census is very likely to be dearer than the current subs.
and it doesnt seem surprising that it would cost more ::)
-
I think it will be quite surprising to some who have bought subs to FindMyPast expecting to get free access to the 1911 census :)

Rather than starting a new thread, has anyone got any idea when Glamorgan is likely to appear transcribed - rather typically, all mine (so far) are from Glamorgan or Ireland, and so my brick walls are going no-where at this point in time

Yes, - this applies to me too...:-(
(With Glamorgan at any rate.)
I've written to them asking when it'll be available, but haven't had a reply as yet.

I reckon you are only talking a matter of a few months because on their blog site they say they will be introducung a subscription service later in 2009 (on findmypast.com) and that they won't do that until all the counties have been made available
-
ah lovely - I assumed they probably wouldn't be too long getting the county on board.
I'll finally be able to find out where gt gt grandad Hughes came from (and hopefully his correct age because I'm certain he lied on his marriage cert!).
I know it'll solve a few brick walls for me, but no doubt will open up a number of new ones ::)

On the Find my past blog it states that they are taking The 1911 Census on tour this year.
First stop is the WDYTYA extravaganza this weekend.
I always understood that a 'tour' indicated various destinations.
I can find no mention of the next or subsequent stops of the 1911 census, in the blog.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

If it's of any use, I got this in an email from FindMyPast recently......
"Come to one of our free 1911 Census lectures or meet the team
Our team will be on hand as usual to answer any questions you have about the website, or family history in general, and this year we are running up to six free lectures a day on how to get the best out of the 1911 census and other findmypast.com records. No tickets or booking required - just make your way to the 1911 classroom on the findmypast.com stand.
Every session will have questions and answers at the end, and we will exclusively reveal some of the new 1911 census documents that will be available in the coming months. "
They are also offering discounted FindMyPast credits and subscriptions at the WDYTYA show this weekend.

Thank you, yes I read all that, I was just wondering where and when the 'tour' would happen! ;D
