Title: Cotterill's of Kegworth and Leicestershire
Post by: S.J Detective on Tuesday 13 January 09 12:34 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone,

I am researching the Cotterill's that originated from Kegworth around the late C18th and I am wondering if any other Rootschat members have links to Cotterill's from Kegworth or Leicestershire.  I would be very interested to hear from you.  I have the following Cotterill's that I am most interested in knowing more about.  All born Kegworth to William and Mary Cotterill.  The spelling of Cotterill varies alot, just to make it more interesting.

Mary 1769, John 1778, Joseph 1778, William 1787, Mary 1790, Ann 1792, John 1797, Henry 1803.

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

The most important one for me is finding out what happened to John Cotteril b.1778 who married Elizabeth Kilby on 13th October 1793 at Kegworth.  He disappears completely and Elizabeth turns up in 1841 in Billesdon, Leicestershire living with a Joseph Haywood also of Kegworth.  My biggest problem is not knowing who was the father of Elizabeth's children, the first of which is confirmed born in 1806.  So that's a 12 year gap with no children and a change or partner from her marriage in 1793.

Any help greatly appreciated, e.g places to look and ideas to forward my research.

Thanks for looking

The following burials @ St Andrew, Kegworth look like yours?
09/10/1848, COTTERELL, Joseph, 70
21/12/1862, COTTERILL, Ann, 71

if that list of children are all William & marys - there are 2 johns -1778 & 1797 in which case John 1778 had to have died pre 1797 - so a short marriage?

I can check kegworth PRs at loughborough library - will be in next week.

Hi Victor Harvey & diddymiller,

Thank you for your interest in my Cotterill family mystery at Kegworth.  I agree Victor with the date for Joseph since I had that one already.  However the one for Ann is new information so many thanks for being able to supply that information.  I have looked at some of the Kegworth PR's at the Leics RO, but they get very illegible around about this time.
I agree with you as well diddymiller that if all these were all William & Mary's children, and I have nothing to suggest they were not at the moment, then John b. abt 1778 did in fact die before 1797 as you summise.  However I have not been able to find a death date and burial for him as yet?  Definately not at Billesdon in any case, so Kegworth or closeby would seem most likely.   I would be most grateful if you could check the Kegworth PR's at Loughborough library.  I look forward to hearing more about any findings that you may come across.

Thank you both again for spending the time to help with my family mysteries at Kegworth.

Happy hunting  - S.J Detective

From a transcript of Kegworth registers - no guarantee as to accuracy but useful as a pointer.

Mary Cotton ch. 14 Jan 1769, d/o William & Mary (only Mary potentially similar name near yours)
John Cotteral ch. 31 May 1772 s/o William & Mary
Thomas Cotterel ch. 26 May 1774 s/o William & Mary
Joseph Cottrel ch. 7 Jan 1778 s/o William & Mary
Ann Cotterel bu. 11 Jan 1781 d/o William & Mary
Joseph Cotterill ch. 27 Feb 1781 s/o William & Mary
Joseph Cotterel bu. 7 May 1781 s/o William & Mary
Joseph Cotteral ch. 12 Oct 1781 s/o William & Mary
William Cotterel ch. 2 Aug 1787 s/o William & Mary
Ann Cottrill ch. 9 Apr 1792 d/o William & Mary
John Cotteril ch. 10 Jan 1797 s/o William & Mary

Mary Cotterill bu. 16 May 1799 spouse William

Henry Cotterill ch. 13 Apr 1803 s/o William & Mary

I have to wonder whether there were two couples both christening children around the same time as there are 3 Josephs christened but only one burial?? OR did they have him christened in 1778 and again in 1781 if he had becom ill?

The marriage for John to Elizabeth Kilby is transcribed as 30th Oct 1793, her name given as Kerby, and witnesses William Cotterell, Mary Cotterill.

Then a possible child - Ann Cotterill ch. 10 Oct 1794 d/o John & Elizabeth

Diddymiller & davidrigg3,

Thanks for the updates and for your kind and generous time at Loughborough library today diddymiller.  The search will continue although it looks as though davidrigg3 has been having some luck, welcome to my search and many thanks for everything you've been able to find out for me so far.

I agree with the marriage Eliz Kilby (Kerby) although strangely I had found that date to be possibly 13th October, so probably a transcription error, interesting news about the witnessess being John's parent's though.  The Kilby family appear to be from Kegworth, I have her parents William b.1748 and Mary.

Very interesting to hear about a possible child to Eliz & John Cotterill (Ann 10 Oct 1794).  I am guessing John must have died somewhere other than Kegworth or their marriage ended and they went their seperate ways.  The children born to Eliz Cotterill at Billesdon were Maria 1806, Thomas 1809, George 1812 and William 1816.  Their father may be Joseph Haywood? from Kegworth whom Eliz Cotterill marries in Feb 1856, just two years before she dies.  I also have an Elizabeth possibly born abt 1800 to Elizabeth Cotterill, whom later marries Thomas Brigstock.  I know it gets very very confusing in the years between Kegworth and Billesdon.

I agree also that there would appear to be at least two if not more Cotterill couples/families living in Kegworth at this time and hence the numerous Cotterill birth's and similar names.  Would be nice to trace them back another generation to find out how they all fit in together, although that looks to be quiet a challenge based upon diddymillers findings today.   Another possibility is that they came from the Castle Donnington area circa 1750-60, where there is also Cotterill connections.

Many thanks

The children born to Eliz Cotterill at Billesdon were Maria 1806, Thomas 1809, George 1812 and William 1816.  Their father may be Joseph Haywood? from Kegworth whom Eliz Cotterill marries in Feb 1856, just two years before she dies.

That's interesting, perhaps the reason they waited so long to marry was that her husband was still alive, and they only finally felt able to marry after he died?

A very interesting point davidrigg3, not one I had considered?  Looks like the search for John's death must be extended to cover all years up to and including Feb 1856 across at least Leicestershire.  I feel some more searching is now necessary given this possibility.

Thank you
